Get more from every walk — backed by research from the Mayo Clinic. WalkPace Pro is a simple interval walking timer based on the science of alternating fast and slow walking. Studies show this method — sometimes called Japanese walking — delivers better fitness, strength, and cardiovascular results than walking at a steady pace, even when total exercise time is the same. Just set your time, press start, and follow the audio cues. That's it. HOW IT WORKS • Set your total workout time (5–120 minutes) • Choose your fast and recovery interval lengths (1–10 minutes each) • Press Start and walk Clear audio cues tell you when to speed up and slow down — gently interrupting your music or podcast so you never miss a transition. Lock your phone and keep walking. WHY INTERVAL WALKING? Research published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings found that alternating 3 minutes of brisk walking with 3 minutes of easy walking significantly outperformed continuous moderate walking. Participants saw improvements in aerobic fitness, leg strength, blood pressure, and blood sugar control. A separate study found peak aerobic capacity increased 27% in sedentary adults after just 3 months. The protocol is simple, the science is strong, and you don't need to run. FEATURES • Audio cues that play over your music and podcasts • Works on iPhone and Apple Watch (standalone or synced) • Haptic feedback on Apple Watch • HealthKit integration — workouts saved automatically • Siri Shortcuts support • Background operation — lock your phone and keep walking • No account required, no ads, no tracking PERFECT FOR • Walkers who want better results from the time they already spend walking • Adults over 40 looking for a science-backed fitness routine • Anyone returning to exercise who wants something gentle but effective • People who find steady cardio boring and want more structure • Fans of the Japanese walking method who want a purpose-built timer No subscriptions. No complexity. Pay once, use forever.

Walk. That's all it takes. Aruki is a calm, premium coach for "Japanese walking" -- the interval method of 3 minutes brisk, 3 minutes easy, repeated five times for a 30-minute walk. Voice guidance tells you when to switch, so you never have to watch the screen. Just put in your earbuds and walk. WHY INTERVAL WALKING The method comes from research by Prof. Hiroshi Nose at Shinshu University in Japan and is widely followed as a Zone 2 aerobic walking routine. Aruki makes it easy to do consistently -- no flashy gimmicks, just a quiet, well-made guide. DON'T THINK -- JUST LISTEN Phase changes are announced with voice, a chime, and a gentle haptic, with a 3-second countdown. Audio keeps playing in the background and on the lock screen, ducking your music instead of stopping it. SEE YOUR ZONE 2 (Apple Health, optional) Aruki reads your heart rate to show when you're in Zone 2, the aerobic sweet spot, and writes finished sessions to Apple Health as workouts so they count toward your Activity rings. Heart-rate access is optional -- the interval timer works fully without it. STREAKS THAT STAY KIND Miss a day and your streak doesn't reset to zero. A 28-day calendar and weekly view let you look back on your own rhythm, gently. WIDGETS & LIVE ACTIVITY Keep your streak, this week's progress, and the season on your Home and Lock Screen. During a session, the Dynamic Island shows remaining time and heart rate. SEASONS OF JAPAN Your walks are shown alongside the 24 micro-seasons (sekki) of the traditional Japanese calendar -- a quiet sense of the year turning. Verdict
WalkPace Pro and Aruki are too close to call on the numbers: across 5 compared parameters — price, ads, in-app purchases and device support among them — neither pulls far enough ahead to decide it. What separates them is feature set and interface, not measurable difference.
