Kökçe
Read full descriptionHide full description
Kökçe tells you where Turkish words come from. One word is chosen each day. Its origin, the languages it passed through, its first written attestation and its meaning today all sit on one screen. JOURNEY Follow a word step by step: where it was born and which languages carried it into Turkish. Each step shows the form and meaning in that language. Reconstructed forms are marked with an asterisk. CROSSING PATHS Words that look nothing alike may have passed through the same link along the way. Kökçe finds those crossings and connects the words: fikir, tefekkür and mefkûre meet in the same Arabic form, and so do rahat and rayiha. Browse them from a word's entry or from a list of their own. DICTIONARY Over 800 words. Filter by origin language, keep your favourites. Search follows Turkish rules, so "sarki" still finds "şarkı". SOURCES Every entry names the source it rests on: Nişanyan Sözlük, the Turkish Language Association's Güncel Türkçe Sözlük, Kubbealtı Lugatı, Tietze. Unknown fields are left empty rather than invented. Where an origin is disputed, the competing view is given too. HOME AND LOCK SCREEN See the word of the day in a widget. Small, medium and large sizes sit alongside Lock Screen widgets, and you choose which pool each widget draws from. SIRI AND SPOTLIGHT Ask "what's the word of the day in Kökçe" and Siri answers without opening the app. Every word is indexed in Spotlight, so it surfaces as you search. DAILY REMINDER The word of the day arrives at the time you choose, in your device's local time. WORD POOL Draw the daily word from the mixed, everyday or lesser-known pool. Open the lesser-known pool to stretch your vocabulary. FOR EVERYONE VoiceOver and Dynamic Type are supported throughout. The app works offline, and dictionary updates arrive in the background as the catalogue grows. FREE AND OPEN SOURCE No ads, no subscription, no account. The app collects nothing and sends nothing to a server. The code is MIT and the content is CC BY-SA 4.0; both are public on GitHub.

Khatt teaches you to write Arabic by hand, one stroke at a time. Short lessons take you from alif to hamza: watch each letter being written, trace it, copy it, then write it from memory, while Khatt checks your writing the way a teacher would. LEARN STEP BY STEP • A path of short lessons with XP, a daily goal and streaks. • All 36 letters: the 28 letters, hamza and its seats, tā' marbūṭa and alif maqṣūra, in every positional form. • Quick games between writing exercises: pick the letter, tap what you hear, match the pairs. • Spaced repetition brings letters back just before you would forget them. FEEDBACK ON EVERY STROKE • Stroke order, direction, missing dots, proportions and stray ink are all checked. • After each check your ink slides onto the model, so you see exactly where you went wrong. • Place dots with a single tap. WRITE HADITH • 22 short, authentic hadith to write word by word. The page glides along the line, so even a long sentence is easy. • Finish with a levha in your own handwriting. • Every hadith is checked against two copies of the Sunnah.com collection and shown with its reference, grade and published English translation. MADE FOR IPHONE AND IPAD • A manuscript-inspired design with the sound of a reed pen on paper. • With Apple Pencil: pressure-sensitive ink, palm rejection and double-tap to undo. • Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets and an optional daily reminder. IN YOUR LANGUAGE Khatt is available in English, Arabic, Turkish, Indonesian, Malay, Urdu, Persian, Bengali and French. Hadith meanings are shown in their published English translation. PRIVATE BY DESIGN Khatt works fully offline. There is no account, no ads and no tracking, and your progress stays on your device. Letter shapes are from the Noto Naskh Arabic typeface (SIL Open Font License).
