The ABCD Cards app can be used in an educational setting as a polling/Q&A tool and as an alternate to the conventional paper ABCD card method. The simple interface provides students with a paper-free way to easily display an answer to an instructor's question and for the instructor to quickly look across the room for the general consensus of answers. Clicking on a letter/color fills the screen with that letter/color; clicking again brings you back to the main screen. ABCD Cards was created by the Center for Instructional Innovation & Assessment at Western Washington University (WWU). Updated 2023.

Verdict
The clearest difference is review sentiment: ABCD Cards at 100% against iClicker Student's 17%. ABCD Cards also leads on in-app purchases (none vs 8) and device support (3 vs 1). iClicker Student's advantage is rating (4.4 vs 3.9) and update cadence (every 6 weeks vs every 40 months). On price, ads and iOS requirement there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. iClicker Student sells 8 one-off in-app purchases. ABCD Cards asks for nothing beyond the download.
iClicker Student holds the better App Store score, 4.4 against 3.9. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: iClicker Student has 37K ratings behind it against 31, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 17% of iClicker Student's written reviews are positive against 100% of ABCD Cards's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
iClicker Student ships an update every 6 weeks, ABCD Cards every 40 months. The most recent releases landed on October 20, 2026 and October 13, 2026 respectively.
