From the developers who brought you Mr Word and Mr Draughts, Mr Chess is a brilliant implementation of the classic board game. Taking away all the unnecessary stuff, Mr Chess takes you straight into the game you love. There are no menus, not even a start button, you're just straight in. Click the small "i" button to access options, which are 1 or 2 player, and Easy, Medium or Hard (1 player only). You can switch between 1 and 2 player mode at any time and even change difficulty level in the middle of a game (great if you are struggling to beat Mr Chess). Playing against Mr Chess in 1 player mode, Easy level is perfect for beginners. Medium provides a challenge for most normal players, and Hard will defeat all but the best players. Now with Castling! Note, when castling, move your king, and your rook will move automatically. Mr Chess is beautifully designed and very minimalist, in keeping with the Mr Board Game philosophy. Enjoy! Mr Chess now offers Premium Subscription. Once subscribed, all advertising is removed from the app, allowing you to enjoy the classic board game with zero distractions. Mr Chess Premium Subscription is an auto-renewing subscription, at a cost of £0.49/$0.49 with a duration of 1 year. Please click "remove ads" to purchase a subscription. Verdict
The clearest difference is ads: Mr Chess at none against Chess Royale's shown. Mr Chess also leads on rating (4.7 vs 4.5) and iOS requirement (10.0 vs 15.0). Chess Royale's advantage is ratings volume (20K vs 24) and update cadence (every 5 weeks vs every 6 months). On price, in-app purchases, monetization model and device support there is nothing between them.
Scored on Price · Rating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings · Update frequency · Ads · In-app purchases · Monetization · Best chart rank · Devices · Requires iOS
Both are free to download. Mr Chess sells 1 in-app purchase, starting at $0.49 per year and Chess Royale sells 10 in-app purchases, starting at $7.99 per 7 days. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.
Mr Chess holds the better App Store score, 4.7 against 4.5. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Chess Royale has 20K ratings behind it against 24, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 50% of Mr Chess's written reviews are positive against 60% of Chess Royale's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
Mr Chess ships an update every 6 months, Chess Royale every 5 weeks. The most recent releases landed on October 16, 2026 and October 19, 2026 respectively.
