Reviews of Traeger

  • Garbage!! Complete and utter garbage.

The grill is ok. Like many other reviews here the app stinks. It barely gets hot enough to Caramelize the steaks, set at 500° you must press the meat on the grill to get grill marks. All my wonderful juices just spilled onto the drip tray, yeah!!! You can’t shut it down without the app as there isn’t a shutdown sequence listed in the menu. My oil drum and soaked hickory chips works waaaay better as a smoker. I have the Costco ironwood model and the guy told me there was a “super smoke” setting… well there isn’t. This think barely smokes. So I have a wood pellet grill that doesn’t even smoke, I had to buy a smoke can and have to relight it several times because the venting on this hunk of junk is terrible!! Why spend $1000s on a smoker that doesn’t smoke?? Now let’s get to the app. It worked for a min, then it decided to lose my grill. Oh if you update the wifi password on your network you will have to go through the entire grill set up again, you can’t just update the password or network name. Anyone want to buy this headache off of me? I am taking it to the dump next week.
  • App gets worse each release

Note app it compatible with this ipad. When i got the grill 3 years ago the app was decent.. I think just the timer was broke so no biggie. Few months later they forced an upgrade when i had guests and everyone was hungry.. the upgrade ruined the timing of the meal. And that one looked worse. I then started noticing the probe temp was 10-15 degrees off..undercooked food. Get used to that drama and then the latest REQUIRED (why?) upgrade wouldn’t work on my ipad’s OS.. for eff sakes, that is just lazy on Traeger’s part. So I go through upgrading my ipad, and then the traeger app.. and the app comes up with a tiny screen.. like phone sized on a big tablet. Junk. And to top it off, none of the alerts work.. timer.. probe temp target, or preheat target. The probe temp just flashes a message on screen for a second.. no sound no visual.. if you are not watching at that exact second food ruined. At this point the app is useless. The recipe and social crap they are doing is a joke.. I already have resources.. there are so many great cooking/grilling/smoking sites on the internet… why traeger, why? I won’t recommend you or buy another.
  • Do not buy into the hype.

I do not get the hype about Traeger. I bought the Silverton 620 and the food does taste good, but the Traeger experience is waaaay overrated.

    (1) My thermometer is about 20 degrees high, even after calibrating the probe. I almost killed my family during Thanksgiving by seriously undercooking my turkey.

    (2) My grill is not dependable. My grill misfired on my third time using it. I had to tear it apart, vacuum everything out, and try again. Even now it feels temperamental and I wonder if the grill will work for me or not.

(3). Finally, the app is pretty basic and has very limited functionality. I just needed to update my Wi-Fi network, and I could not do it through the app. I needed to reset the grill (hold in button for 10 seconds on Wi-Fi screen, power down, reset, etc) and start over as though I was starting a brand new setup. This process should have been much easier through the app.

I do like that I can set the grill temperature and monitor the probe temperature from the Traeger app on my phone. It would be even better if I could trust the probe temperature.

At the end of the day, you have to hand it to Traeger. They have marketed their product well and convinced me and many other people to “drink the Kool-Aid” (I.e. buy their extremely expensive grills that have many functional issues).

If I had to do it over again, I wouldn’t have made this Traeger purchase, and would have spent my hard-earned money elsewhere.
