Doesn’t work.

Very hard to troubleshoot. The app is the worst app available.

BT Premium Whole home Wi-Fi Mesh system

We have a large Victorian house with solid brick walls that make setting up a home Wi-Fi system a challenge so we bought this system back in 2020. We bought the 3 disk set and 2 additional discs, setting up initially was a bit of a challenge however once setup they worked well, and they provided an excellent Wi-Fi signal around the home. However periodically one or more discs will turn red, and this disc then blocks wi-fi to any devices within range, and the whole system then has to be set back up. When setting back up additional discs, when connecting to the master disc, very often one or more discs fail to connect to the master disc and the setup process has to be restarted, you can spend hours going around in circles trying to set the system up. Over the last 3 years 3 of the 6 discs will no longer connect to the system at all despite trying many times and spending hours repeating the setup process. We are now down to 3 discs and having to repeat the setup process every 3 or 4 weeks. I would not recommend these discs and would rate them as 1 for reliability, 1 out of 5 for how easy it is to setup, and 5 out of 5 when working.

Terrible

Truly awful. Master disk Resets its configuration at will, terrible phone application to manage configuration which has no option to save or restore config. Constantly having to reset and setup additional disks. Firmware updates few and far between. A premium priced product with what appears to be a far from premium software and firmware experience. Never had such a poor experience with a premium priced product. I have 5x disks and although the mesh when its working works well, the software updates and general bugs which clearly exist and require updates to iron out are not happening! I would not recommend this to anyone until BT start to address the very poor Firmware for the disks & the management options from within the iphone App. **Update*** you can now locally backup the device configuration to your phone from within the app. Everything else remains the same. Still extremely poor stability. Now supports WPA3 But auto falls back to WPA2 which is susceptible to hacking. It’s really not good enough. ***Update2*** backup and restore function doesn’t restore disk or device details. Master router randomly reset its self again, struggling to keep a stable network for more than a few minutes. Factory reset & discovery of disks performed for more times than I care to remember. Ready to take the £600 loss and buy something else.

6 discs mini whole home

I have an old property and previously had many wireless access points dotted around the house to get full Wi-Fi coverage. I was tempted by the mesh system and bought the mini system as back then my broadband speed was 10 mbps. The setup was not too difficult as I had become a dab hand at setting up the old access points. I followed the instructions and had one disc linked to the router via Ethernet. It was tricky to get all the discs seeing each other and some were reporting just a good connection. I then got Starlink satellite broadband and my broadband speed has gone up to 250 mbps. I’ve found out that for the mini and whole home kit you can connect all the discs back to the router via Ethernet, but not the Premium… doing this has transformed my Wi-Fi coverage as every disc now reports an excellent connection and I get full speed all over the house. Very happy 😀

Good performance, poor value

I have the premium whole home 3 pack. It performs well, it does what it says it will do. My only issue is that one of the discs has to be connected to the smart hub by Ethernet cable, effectively my 3 pack is only a 2 pack. My objective was to have the discs in a string formation in three out buildings to reach the far end of the paddock, I presumed wrongly that the first disc would log onto the smart hub via Wi-Fi, so as to utilise the coverage built into the smart hub, like some other extenders I’ve used before. Hence my 3 star rating, as I have to purchase another disk to complete my expected coverage. I don’t believe this is made clear enough before purchase. In fact it is a good idea to disable the smart hub Wi-Fi while setting up as it can confuse the syncing process, this is mentioned in troubleshooting, however, I found this out after hours of trying, it should be more prominent I believe. Can be tricky after a power cut as they reconnect better one after the other in series. However, performance is good for my use, plenty of streaming in the house, and Wi-Fi calling outside as there is very little mobile signal. Shame about the first disk being a hub.

Just awful.

I don’t get it. The app barely works. The discs work as long that’s I don’t use more than 3 at a time. There has been plenty of time for BT to get this right. But you phone BT for help and they say they have nothing to do with it because the discs are sold by…. BT the shop.

I’m looking at a mesh system now. But for posterity, here’s the comments I’ve posted before:
Discs randomly just stop working. I can stand next to one and have no signal. And here’s the best bit: if you restart the network, THIS DEGRADES ITS PERFORMANCE (for a while). Unbelievable. AVOID. AVOID. AVOID. AVOID. BE WARNED. AVOID
Latest: it’s still awful. And no, BT cannot solve why I have tried. And tried. It’s really simple: I want to just use this like a normal person. But it’s just too much effort. It drops. It fails to update. It crashes. And it just stops working. All without any reason at all that any normal human can understand. The discs can be standing right next to each other and fail to communicate. The settings just randomly forget choices you’ve had saved for days. To sum this up in 5 words: Avoid Avoid Avoid Avoid Avoid

Response from developer

Hi, sorry that you cannot get the WHW to work. Please get in touch with the WHW helpdesk on 0808 100 6116 or email btconnectedhome@bt.com so that we understand your issue(s) and help fix it. Thanks John BT UK Team

Classic BT

I don’t think it’s been tested much. App very slow between screens, it won’t allow camera to focus so you have to be far away from the tiny QR code on disc then it can’t recognize it, select enter manually and it says no disc found (which would make sense since it never allows any manual entry).
By the title I mean it very closely represents my ongoing saga with BT broadband. When it works it’s great and to be fair it does usually work, but when it doesn’t it’s a nightmare to get help.

BT Wi-Fi 6 Discs

These discs are everything they promised to be. They have now bee. Running for around 7 days no problems no issues. Superb coverage all around the house. The garden is ‘illuminated’ with bandwidth one disc is in my study another is in my Garage and whilst the product only states home use it seems in my case I have successfully connected to my Garage which is some 20 Meters from my home. I have excellent connectivity and the alarm and camera’s work perfectly. I do not make recommendations or often give feedback but if you are considering a Mesh network for your home you probably wont go far wrong with these fabulous devices. I am getting 63mb all over the house Garden and Garage. Well done BT for providing a brilliant set of discs.

Edited to say I used my Mac to set the discs up initially but the app appears to do the same and have not experienced any issues with the app or the browser interface.

Impressed

Having used Wi-Fi extenders in the past with limited effect I was a little sceptical as to just how good these would be and really wasn’t willing to spend that much money to find out, fortunately my nephew was sick of the poor Wi-Fi in my house and decided to buy them for me. From the moment he set it all up, which was really easy, it improved the Wi-Fi in the whole house which is an old 1900’s terrace with solid brick walls throughout, the main Virgin Modem is located on the first floor with one of the disks, second disk in a bedroom down the hall and final disk is in the dinning room, with all three disks working together I’m getting the full 350mbs In the whole house and around 200mbs in the garden where before there was no signal, in short if I had known how good they would’ve been I would have bought them myself ages ago.

Set-up still a nightmare; who thought this was an improvement?

I had this app already. The original set-up was difficult and annoying, and frankly once you had the App the functionality was limited, however you do need it from time to time and that was the case today when I opened it up, only to discover I had been forgotten and had to start all over again. I thought “it must be improved” but was very soon let down. The UX is atrocious, and as before, you are routinely set-back during the process, with the “Hours of your life you’ll never get back” timer ticking away. Part way through, while (re)adding a 3rd disc I had to move some items to get to the Power Supply and when I returned to the App it took me all the way to the start. So adding my 3rd device sequentially now had to be managed as if I had bought a 3rd and was now adding it. That entailed moving the disc back to the 1st, using the WPS connection, and then moving it back to the original location, only to be told that a site previously rated as “Good” was now “Poor” and rather than allowing me to live with that, forcing me to relocate the disc…part way through that, and I get sent back to the start, with the only plus side that I was asked to rate the App during this whole sorry situation. When the product works, I have found it to be excellent and really has made living (in which wi-fi is now more required than ever) and in a 1960’s house, much, much better. Shame the App makes it so hard to get to….
