Not bad, not great

While it is nice to be able to have access to the core rules, and be able to load you purchased codex, for free, there is still that needs work. I really feel like the app could be more user friendly. One simple addition would be having the app save user created sub factions, i.e. successor chapters. Every time you create a new list you have to go through and create you sub-faction again. Minor, yes, but seems like it should be easy to correct. I would also love to see the app fully compatible with iPad. This app has a lot of possibility, GW just needs to put a little more effort into it.

Still in Beta

This app is basically an army builder, but it can’t even do that. It cannot calculate points reliably, and has numerous bugs that prevent the user from selecting warlords, adding accompanying models (drones for Tau), etc. Paying for the app only gives you the *option* to access books you’ve already purchased. In other words, this app is more expensive than just buying the books, and it’s only feature is too buggy to work. There is no benefit to using the app over free options available on the web. I was very excited to use this app and am a big fan of the hobby, so I know games workshop is capable of more. Why don’t they update this app to make it worth a player’s time and money?

Improve Accessibility

I generally like the app, but my major complaint is directed at the poor visual disability support. IN the past years, i bought digital codicies and it wasn’t perfect, but it was very useful and usable if for no other reason than i could use it on my tablet (iPad specifically)

Now that the later editions have been moved to this app, its harder for me and anyone like me to interact with this app as it is only available on phone devices i.e. notably smaller screens.

Please make this app functional and available on tablets/iPad asap. Yes i can download it and have it on my iPad but the aspect ration is the same as the phone. This is a poor stand in.

When i heard digital codes were in the codex, i thought this would be a reasonable boon, but the current set up is just bothersome and at times frustrating given my poor eyesight. Please go back to the old system or update the current one to accommodate this need as you guys have in the past. Not asking for anything special. Just let the app be appropriately sized on tablets

More bugs than a nurgle army

The app is in theory amazing but in reality is quite broken, just some examples
1. Can’t choose warlord for most armies nor can you choose their traits without the app reverting back to the Home Screen and asking you to choose your warlord again.
2. Deathwatch and other armies, when choosing loadout for individual models after choosing the weapons the app then adds them to the standard loadout - my deathwatch veterans apparently each have a multimelta a bolt gun a power sword and a heavy flamer :/
3. Pre game strategies won’t save for most armies neither do sub faction traits, relics and psychic powers.
Please games workshop fix this app!! It’s such a good opportunity for you to make money money money via digital codex’s but alas you give us mediocre production with maximum hype

Incomplete UX

The UX for this app is pretty poor. While better than last year when I tried it, it is often bad or just inconsistent.

Many options for my ork list were unavailable or hard to find when building a list. Some options have model pictures, many do not. Performance is mostly good but slows down on simple things like adding a 5 pt weapon. When you want to go down a list making dozens of selections…waiting a few seconds after each button press(for the app to do a basic calculation of x-5) just gets tedious. Having the detachment type layout while building the list is cool. Wish it didn’t take half of my screen space for the list though.

This is all to not mention the rules reference layouts are still, but I would probably still use the paperback for that anyway.

Codexes still need to be bought in paper to be used in app. Adding a codex I bought requires input at their website instead of in the app. A sign out/back in was needed for the newly added codex to show as registered. The whole user experience is poor at every turn. Really a bummer.

Will we ever get an update with bug fixes…?

This app could be great, it really could. But it seems every update simply introduces new bugs and never fixes a single existing problem. Datasheets accessed by search simply show a blank page. Selecting war gear options in the army list builder causes incorrect points totals for army lists. Custom sub-factions are erased with each update. Incorrect points values for units still haven’t been corrected after multiple updates. Worst of all, the in app feedback link just directs users to a survey that has been closed, so these issues can’t even be reported. What a joke.

Extremely useful. Needs more development

The app is good to use for planning out and building armies. Where it falls down is on creating any form of summary that can be used to reference everything related to the army that has been selected. To reference any of the information you have to go and look at the individual units datasheets in the detachment.

The army I am using is the Necrons. Unfortunately the Tomb Blades do not add correctly when selecting the individual models load outs. It applies the war gear points to all grossly inflating the actual points value being spent. Unfortunately the feedback link in the app does not function. And I cannot find anywhere to raise the issue other than here.

Terrible calculation bugs

I collect sisters and like many of the other users who have reviewed here the app fails to calculate points correctly.

A good example is when adding a chain sword (0 pts) to a superior in a battle sister squad it adds 10 points to the total. When adding a combi munitorum flamer it adds 0 pts, not the requisite 10 pts.

There’s a lot of work here for gw to do. I’d really like for these basic arithmetic issues to be resolved. If they were, I’d be inclined to resubscribe.

Pretty terrible right now - updated

Look above for everything wrong with this app. I subscribed and can’t get access to any content despite having already paid as the app keeps telling me I’m not a subscriber. Can’t get in contact with anyone from GW so guess I’ll just have to unsubscribe through Apple. Edit: Months on from this original review the app remains bad. For what works out at a yearly cost of nearly £50 it’s lacking in pretty much everything. They promised an army builder, which you can get for free anyway, but haven’t delivered, even to this day it’s still not available. TL;DR - don’t waste your money, this is a really bad app and shouldn’t be a subscription service. I have no idea what you’d subscribe for, you don’t get anything that isn’t already in the books you no doubt own.

Update - this remains one of the worst apps I’ve ever used, the fact they charge a monthly subscription for this is outrageous, months later it is still non functional

Good but issues

I like this app. It’s obviously a ‘official’ version of BattleScribe and being official it has several advantages. It has quick references to check rules while you build a list instead of having to guess what you’re selecting. It’s easier to use and is more user friendly when it comes to meeting list requirements. Sure it costs a small fee and I’m happy to pay the monthly fee to support my hobby but…

I’m paying for a flawed product. Fundamentally flawed. It’s an army builder that can’t do the mathematics properly. I’ve been trying to build a variety of Death Guard lists to inform my next unit purchases and have found that they are apparently not legal because I’m over the points costs… except I’m not. I checked the maths.

It’s disappointing not least because I took the recommendation to use it from a GW store employee.
