  • Great app but……

This has been a great app and would have got 5 stars however……..I got the app on my phone, paid for the guitar, only to find I can’t use it ad free on my iPad! Disappointed to be asked to pay to use it without adverts on the iPad. Seems like once you’ve paid for it you have to pay again to use on another device. That’s a bit like a craftsman having to pay for the same tool twice just because they move it from one toolbox to another??
Update on previous review - The folks at Fret Trainer got in touch and helped me sort the problem out very quickly. Turned out to be a quick fix. I’ve increased it to 4 stars. Would be 5 if the stats could be backed up to the cloud but other than that this is a really handy app for practice on the go!

You do not have to pay for it twice. Please login to the same Apple account on your iPad and tap the "Restore In-App Purchases" button on the main menu.
  • Nearly perfect

Fret Trainer features a variety of exercises, and seems pretty easy to use. The sounds are pleasant, and the look and feel of the game is clean and straightforward. Comment about the navigation: I fiund it a little confusing, and got stuck a time or two early on.

One thing I wish were different with Fret Trainer: in the “name the notes“ exercises, I wish that instead of asking players to identify the note on the fretboard as “B” or “F#”, that it would just display the note as it appears on the musical staff. To me, the names of the notes are in the way, and are less relevant somehow than the way they look in the score. If you read music, you already know the letter names if the notes.

There is a musical staff exercise that does match to the letter names of the notes, but again, that seems less useful than matching those notes directly to the fretboard.

Also, minor visual improvement for that exercise would be to display the ledger lines above and below the staff clearly, not grayed out; the lack of clear ledger lines is extremely distracting.

I like the app, and I really like that it displays the fretboard from the guitarist’s point of view, not vertically or as seen as if looking straight at the instrument. Nearly perfect…if it allowed a setting to view notes as they really appear, instead of only by name, I’d give it two “p”s up!

  • My favourite app

This is my favourite app! I’m a singer and have performing and playing guitar for years but I only know cowboy chords. I’ve always wanted to improve and bought countless books but could never get my head around it. This app has changed all that! I’m now learning the notes on the guitar fretboard and it’s designed so well that I’m using it consistently, clocking up the hours and really feel like I’m progressing. I can take it at my own pace which is great. Seeing the stats motivates me to keep going too. I’ll be moving on to learning staff notes next and then naming chords. I really recommend it. Thanks so much to the devs, you rock! 🎸

  • Suggestion

Great app - in a new update can you give users the option to make the strings different colors? I feel this would help with the memorization. Thanks.
  • Great app!

Overall a great app! I am using it to learn frets 6 through 12 on the bass. Two days into using it, I already feel more comfortable naming these notes. Still far from perfect, but definitely improving quickly thanks to this app. Definitely worth the $2 investment!

My one (very small) complaint is that there isn’t an option to stop the same note from appearing more than once in a row. It’s a small annoyance, but it builds up with time and disrupts the flow of the exercise.

  • Very nice..

Good job on the App. Very useful tool.
I would like to recommend a improvement in the Name Note game. In the settings allow to only use certain notes. That would enable users to concentrate on the chosen notes and octave notes.
  • one major flaw

Love the app. So much that I paid for the addons. Only to realize this app has one major flaw for which I’d advise any guitar player against it. I wish I could get my $ back.

The fretboard is not oriented per your view as a guitarist. That is, on the app, the 12th fret is on your left. If you were fretting in real life, the 12th fret would be to your right hand side. I actually feel the confusion that training on this app and then on my guitar creates.

Developers please fix this. It’s a simple counter clockwise 180 degree flip of the fretboard.

  • A must have app for guitarists

Best instrument learning app I’ve come across. Simple and effective way to learn the fretboard. Has helped my playing and understanding tremendously.
  • Note buttons illogical

I feel like the note buttons (and their sharps/flats) should be arranged chromatically onscreen. From what I can see, reading the note buttons from left to right shows Bb, A, B, B, Db, C, etc. Why not Bb, B, C, Db like a piano keyboard? Better yet, how about a piano keyboard with optional labels?

Also, would be nice if the app could be used in portrait mode (for one handed use) but I understand that would probably be a larger undertaking.

    Great app otherwise! Thanks!

  • Best app

This has to be the best app to learn your fretboard. Within 20 minutes I was flying through the notes not missing any. I didn’t think I’d be able to learn so quickly. Great app 👍🏼
