Description of Fish Washington

A new Sport Fishing Regulations Mobile Application for Washington State. The Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife is excited to announce a new Sport Fishing Regulations Mobile Application for Washington State! Washington State offers anglers some of the most diverse fishing opportunities available anywhere in the world. In a single weekend, you can dig for clams, troll for salmon, drop a pot for Dungeness crab, fly fish for steelhead, trout or bass, jig for halibut or rockfish, and bait fish for catfish, tuna, lingcod or sturgeon. Maintaining this variety of fishing opportunities necessitates correspondingly diverse―and sometimes complex―fishing regulations. To make these regulations easier to understand, Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife developed the Fish Washington mobile app. Browse for places to fish. Tap on a body of water to see what you can fish for and retain, gear restrictions (if any), etc. Search for your favorite fishing spot and see the regulations; for today and for that upcoming trip. Filter for target species. Share your experience or favorite fishing spot with friends and family. Get real-time notifications about changes to regulations, emergency rules, etc. This application is partially supported by advertiser content. This content is provided via an independent advertising service. Advertiser content delivery is determined by user online profiles. No user information is collected by WDFW.

  • Great app for a one time use

I have had this app for the last two years and it has only worked great the initial first time I downloaded it. Now every time I open it it says downloading erecords for 5 minutes or more and btw resets that time frame if your phone screen turns off because the data retrieval takes FOREVER. I have removed/uninstalled the app and re-installed it and still the same process occurs when trying to open and use it!

Florida fish and game’s app is 100x better than this app. WDFW please……please you could do way better than this!

    Developer Response

Hello, Thank you for providing your feedback. I am happy to share that we released a complete rewrite of the app in April. This new build addresses the issues you encountered with the app taking so long to sync and needing to sync every time you open it. Among several improvements, with the new version, the files are much smaller and load more quickly, and there is a background sync process that will run daily as long as you don't force-quit the app. Please install it and let us know what you think. Best, Jake
  • Helpful but slooooow

This app is an absolute necessity given how often the regulations change. That said, because of these frequent changes, the requires an update almost every time I open it. This process can take anywhere from 2 to 10 minutes on fast internet. And during this time I had to be looking at my phone and tapping the screen every so often so it doesn’t go to sleep, otherwise I’ll have to restart the whole process.

My phone can stream HD video no problem so I cannot for the life of me understand why this app takes so long to update the regulations.
  • Useless

Every time you open the app it spends five minutes downloading new regulations and then another five “merging” them. One of these operations fails about half the time. Until both are done you can’t use the app. There seems to be no concept of caching the regs, only getting diffs for the area you are in, rather than those for 800 lakes when all you want to know is if you can keep chinook or not. By the time the regs are downloaded your fish is dead.

This app could be so good and so useful if it cached the regs and was faster but for all the years it’s been out, it has never been improved and remains completely useless.
