  • Works Really Well!

I must say that I have purchased the premium version of 1Blocker after using the trial. It just works. I can’t remember seeing an ad on Safari since installing and using this app. Also, seeing all the trackers in the apps you use is pretty interesting. It does what it says and works very well at it!

I also want to note that the customer service of the 1Blocker team is fantastic! I had a small hiccup in my experience and the team reached out to my outreach quickly and completely solved what I was seeing. Very impressed!

  • Great app; firewall still needs work

I’ve used this app for years to bring browsing peace of mind. Very cool that they’ve now developed a clever way to implement a full on-device firewall! Unfortunately, it’s definitely still deserving of its beta label, for two reasons: (1) it chews through battery life like a starving dog through kibbles when reception is poor (such as in a locker), and (2) having it active makes it impossible to see in iOS Settings how much cellular data each app is using, since it’s all just tallied under 1Blocker.

So I’ll probably be disabling it again and waiting for refinement (and deleting Facebook Messenger in the meantime because I trust their network activity as far as I can throw it—which isn’t far, since I can’t really throw radio waves).

    Keep at it, 1B!

I appreciate your kind words about 1Blocker, and feedback on what should me improved in the Firewall tool! By the way, we are testing a beta version of the app that should improve battery consumption, and, hopefully, this issue will be addressed in the next app update. More improvements are coming soon as well, please, stay tuned! :)
  • I am so grateful - iOS app.

This program has never given me any trouble. I’m amazed at the number of tracking connections prevented by the firewall. Not to be neurotic, but I wonder what is still leaking through. I’m particularly happy that my internet interactions seem to function well with all the blocking selections turned on. Naturally, each user will have particular needs (I, for example, don’t use a VPN, though there might be a time when I would want to), but mine are met. If the developers could add firewall to the Mac program that’d be wonderful. And, if you (developers) could add a donation button to your website, I think I’d like to send you something to express my gratitude.
Can Firefox and/or DuckDuckGo receive your attention at some point?
    Thanks,
    -Jim

  • Not Keeping Up with the Times

Back in the day I used to use 1Blocker and it worked very well to stop annoyances and improve webpage performance. That is now no longer the case.

1Blocker does not seem to be able to come up with a reliable way to block the now ubiquitous EU/GDPR cookie notices that does not make pages unusable. On so many pages 1Blocker stops the cookie notice from appearing, but it does not stop the overlay behind it that blocks the page. The user is left with a non-functional page that will not scroll or accept any input. The only was to access it is reload without content blockers and answer the cookie notice question.

Cookie notices have become so annoying they’re almost worse than ads, but having 1Blocker break so many webpages is the worst of all. I am moving away from using it and at this point won’t renew my subscription.

Thank you for your feedback, LuckysClub! We are working on improving the rules on such websites, so please, feel free to report them to us via the Send Feedback button or our email (support@1blocker.com). Cookie notices sometimes lock scrolling on web pages, but due to technical limitations of the tools we use, scrolling is out of our control at the moment. We hope Apple will give us the necessary features to resolve such issues in the future. Anyhow, you are always welcome to reach out to us directly via our support channels. It will help us keep track of such issues and update our filters!
  • Update: Working Great Now

Update: so there seems to be a gap between settings inside the 1Blocker app and the whitelisting section of the extension inside safari. I discovered today that even though I had removed the whitelisting rules inside the safari extension, those rules were being overridden by a whitelisting setting in the app itself. After removing the toggles inside the app, the blocking resumed as expected. However, the whitelisting settings remained inside the extension. Regardless, I’m satisfied that things are operating as expected. Good work!

Sites like Forbes are not cooperating at al. With all blockers turned on and given permissions, Forbes just runs wild with huge banners and pop ups. It’s not the only one. I have never had issues until the last few weeks or so. I got a link from my grandma for an article there and when it loaded I assumed none of the blockers were on or maybe I had it whitelisted and I did have it whitelisted. I turned that off, let Safari process the rules, and reloaded the page. Still no go

  • Paid decent app turned into subscription crippleware

UPDATE: after running into issues following the devs’ reply below, I contacted them directly. Issue hasn’t really been fixed as such but at least most of the functionality CAN be recovered:

Go to Settings -> “Premium” even if you do NOT (want to) subscribe -> almost at the bottom, left is a tiny Restore Purchase link -> click & IGNORE PURCHASE ERROR MESSAGE(!): (re)enabling more than one filter should now work anyway.

Thanks to Cloud Sync (enabled by default) seems like all my connected devices have then been updated as well.

Rating updated now - under the assumption that filter updates will continue to be at least included once in a while with App updates...

    ====== Original Review ======
I have been a paying supporter since 2015, had no issue paying for the new version in 2018, and would have happily continued with paid upgrades!

But as I just installed it on a new device, I find there is no “Restore Purchase” option anywhere, and instead this has been turned into yet another endless-payments “freemium” piece of crippleware!

    <SNIP rant-y bit>

If you want constant payments for constant filter updates (which I’m not interested in), maybe, but disabling existing paid functionality deserves a ZERO Star rating.

But the cherry on this {bleep}pie is the unwanted pop-up in my (ex) paid app ASKING ME to give you this review.

Update: Thank you for updating your review and adding such important details! That's right, besides cloud updates we include new rules in each release that we launch to the App Store. Currently, it takes us two or three weeks to deliver a new version of the app. ------------------------------- Hello.  I understand what is driving your concerns considering the changes that we had to make. I think there is some kind of misunderstanding, though, which I'd like to apologize for.  We strived to avoid any negative impact on the existing customers offering them the same conditions that they previously had. You should still have access to multiple blocking categories, custom rules, iCloud Sync, etc. at no extra cost. The rules are still updated with every 1Blocker release to the App Store, just like it was before.  In case the app doesn't let you turn on multiple categories or create custom rules, please, reinstall it and use the Restore Purchase button that you will find on the subscription screen in Settings > Premium. It will be below the subscription conditions on the left side of the screen. Also, there's an additional feature that lets 1Blocker update the rules automatically. It is an optional feature, and as soon as 1Blocker recognizes you, it will offer a one-year trial for cloud updates in Settings > Premium. You can give it a try if you want. Otherwise, you can ignore the offer. It won't affect the rest of our app's functionality.  Please, let us know if you still have any questions via support@1blocker.com  We will meet you there and help you out.
  • Round 3 Money Grab!

I bought the original app then apparently it wouldn't work with newer device's. Then wouldn't you know it they came out with a new app that of course you had to repurchase. And now like all the other lunatics of apple-land ( Airmail can you hear me) they want you to pay a subscription. Of course they say if you purchased it nothing will change or its apples fault they haven't told us you have purchased the app before, or it takes up to 15min. Well most developers put but a button right next to some text that says restore purchase......isn't it funny if you pay now it instantly works but if you reinstall there is a issue. 🤣 What a shame, just like A LOT of apps that worked great and I supported I now have to find a new app or just block only trackers, or maybe adds......

  • Better than Adguard.

Switched over from Adguard when it started to have more issues with site rendering than I would like. Was running into issues with sites not displaying correctly and needing to reload pages.

Happy to say that I am not seeing any such issues with 1Blocker, and that it’s also just all around much faster.

I also really like the ability to easily block all of the most common adult sites. Will definitely make sure my sister knows about that so that my very young nephews don’t have to accidentally discovery anything that they don’t need to be seeing.

Only downside I’ve found so far is that this app isn’t free if you enable all of the features that you’ll want to use. That said, it’s pretty inexpensive all things considered. At least you’re getting a quality app. Free isn’t always worth it.

All around a good change I am happy with. So props to the developers. I hope this app stays this fast and effective.

  • Well polished and robust content blockers.

1Blocker for MacOS and iOS: Well polished and robust content blockers.

UI: Nice, clean, and pleasant to use. Nice text, nice icons...A big improvement from the last version.

Blocking: In my testing blocking is very effective and fast as well. With the ability to create custom rules and have them synch to all your devices is a huge bonus feature. And now with the ability to unlock premium and have weekly cloud rule updates, I could not ask for anything more.

Bonus: Very responsive and helpful developers. I had annoying issues with a site that was above my experience as far as creating complex rules. Shortly after reaching out, the devs posted their own custom fix just for me. That is rare these days and I really appreciate it.

Go ahead and purchase a subscription or the discounted lifetime option as I did. You will not regret it.

I am very pleased with all these new improvements

  • Removed features from paying customer

I previously purchased the 1 blocker X app and enjoyed it but recently it has moved to a subscription model and removed some key features. Even though the developer addressed multiple complaints my customers saying that all the previous features open to customers who paid for the apps are still available, they are incorrect in this claim.

You cannot select multiple categories e.g. ads, trackers, annoyances to block at the same time. It is limited to just one category. One of the features and attractions open to previously paying customers was the ability to block multiple categories. Not a very happy customer. I feel like I wasted money since this app is basically useless now. Will move to a different ad blocking app.
