Rare languages, some great features, but not ideal for beginners & some bugs

I’m a high A1/low A2 learner of Burmese who’s been studying using a variety of resources for a few years now. It’s hard to find an app that teaches Burmese, so I was pleasantly surprised to find one that does. I appreciate the dialogues, and the ability to turn transliterations and translations on and off. However, I don’t think the app would be ideal for beginners as the app never really requires you to learn 1:1 word correspondence. It teaches you the phrases “He sleeps” and “I go shopping” and never changes it up to “He goes shopping.” I’ve also done 12 lessons and found at least 4-6 errors in the app so far (no choices, audio not matching text, and possibly a misspelled word, though the last one could be my error). Still, even if the word for “go” changes spelling when used in sentences, it would be useful to have a note about this in the app. I also suspect that the app may be teaching how to speak written Burmese which differs from spoken Burmese, though I’m not proficient enough to know this for sure. It’s nice to have an organized app for Burmese learning, but I haven’t decided if the good outweighs the bad enough to continue after the free trial period yet.

Very Satisfied

I’m using this app to learn Albanian and Bosnian. I would emphasize that you won’t become fluent just through using the app, and learning the language comes down to your own motivation and use of other resources too. This is by no means a criticism of this particular app, as I feel that apps like Duolingo also will not make you fluent.

However, I feel that the app is easy to use and is providing good information and a great starting point to guide my learning further. It doesn’t teach you every single word, but it gives you some important basic ones for each lesson. As I use it more I am beginning to understand some of the grammar rules by doing the conversation exercises and am picking up on certain nuances in the languages.

Overall I think this is a great app to use as a starting point. You will need to incorporate other resources if you truly want to become fluent, but it has been very helpful in guiding me. Other things I have added alongside the app include watching videos of native speakers and chatting with AI in Albanian to have real-world conversations in lieu of knowing people who speak Albanian. Don’t expect to become fluent using just one medium, but the app has only been beneficial for me.

Needs some work

Not as good as Duolingo. It doesn’t explain a lot of the sentence structure and introduces words I don’t know seemingly out of the blue with no explanation. When you get the answer correct it should always have the English translation under it.

Best experience!

I recommend Ling. It is so much fun. It also helps you learn any language you want. If you get something wrong it doesn’t take back your rewards, it just reviews them. It also rewards you when you finish a lesson.

Had problems initially but resolved in the end.

The app is now pretty decent and allows me to learn a language that isn’t on many other apps. So definitely a bonus from that point of view. It’s designed well and I like the learning style it provides.

It has been a bit of a love/hate relationship though. Previously the app had bugs where progress resets to zero and some confusion from customer service meant I wasn’t getting what was originally promised.

However, Ling soon apologised and rectified my account issues. Since then I feel more confident in the app and look forward to learning a language that my girlfriend and family speak.

Scam app awful customer service

I would recommend going to use one of the legitimate language apps like Rosetta Stone/Duolingo/Babbel. Ling is just a money grab. Good luck if you need customer support. Genuinely wouldn’t recommend this app to anyone I know. Update: I just saw other reviews seems like they are doing this to everyone. I would walk away now whilst you can.

Response from developer

Hi There, Thank you for the review and I am a little saddened by what I have read. Customer support will always answer your emails within 24 hours and you are able to reach us either in-app or by email at support@ling-app.com. Regarding your update on the review, I am assuming you are referring to subscriptions. Subscriptions are handled by Apple and not Ling as you are essentially an Apple customer. Apple as per their terms and conditions limit us to what we can do with subscriptions and refunds for customers, this is clearly stated in their terms and conditions when purchasing from the App Store, meaning refunds on subscriptions are directly handled by them as opposed to Google who allow us to issue refunds to users who request them. I would love to hear more about your issues and help to try resolve them. Please email me at support@ling-app.com and lets see what we can do for you. Cheers, Rob!
