Clickbait titles “Here’s Why”

Omg I’m so sick of these kinds of titles. First story I opened. Title includes “Here’s why”
Makes me want to slam my phone down, bc I got suckered into downloading the app. Deleting right away!!!

Sounds great ... Actually it is

I like the ideas behind ‘Tortoise’. Their response to the shallow frenzy of sound bites that characterize current news media, is to turn to carefully considered, well written analyses of the big issues that shape our lives and our world, and to hold ‘ThinkIn’ meetings that allow members and invited attendees to talk about ideas without resorting to ‘question time’ showcasing. It’s refreshing and welcome.

After signing up for the snow newsletter, which give access to some of the topics on offer, I was impressed enough to commit to membership. I am so glad I did.

Good app for the ‘slow news’ evolution

Even though it’s ‘slow news’, the content changes daily. You can bookmark articles you want to go back to. The biggest downside is the iPad version, which failed to make use of the added screen real estate. Would also be good to have more audio content, or a full audio version, like the Economist. There are not huge amounts of content, so this could be quite manageable to pull off...

Response from developer

Hello Thomas, Thanks so much for the positive rating and review. Audio content is something we're exploring. In our recent story on Saudi Arabia, we included a podcast-style conversation between two of our editors to accompany the written piece. We also provide an audio version of some of our long-reads. It's an area we're increasingly looking into, so watch this space. Thanks for being a member of Tortoise. We look forward to seeing you at a ThinkIn soon. Best wishes, The Tortoise Team

Not as diverse as marketed

Waste of time.

Great!

Thought provoking content merged with a clean looking App. A great shift from “breaking news” journalism as this newsroom isn’t designed/incentivised to make you click on as many short news articles as possible to show you ads. Really hope this succeeds and best of luck to the team :)
Some bugs in the app though but I’m sure they’ll be ironed out soon.
Highly recommend!

Revie of app, not content

Although it’s tricky to distinguish because the medium of the content delivery is so important. The nature of Tortoise is for slow, considered takes on the world around us. In that regard, the iPad app is brilliant. No noise, just content. The type is beautiful. The amount of images is spot on. And that’s it. It knows what it wants to be and doesn’t indulge in pointless bells and whistles. Every morning at 11am I get the notification and I read. Simple.

What the world needs...

I am, as many others are I presume, time poor. I don’t have time for the barrage of news that interrupts my day. All contradicting itself. I need a well-informed friend to tell me what’s what, in just the right amount of detail so that I actually learn something instead of superficial fast news that can’t keep up with itself. I only need to know about the stuff that matters. Tortoise is my new digital friend in the know in that respect. An antidote to fake news, and much like noise cancelling headphones amidst the cacophony of media noise. Bravo team. Keep slow and carry on
