Liked it a lot (mostly)

When I noticed that Beyond a Steel Sky was available on Apple Arcade I quickly signed up. I loved the original back in the day! For me this game was a bit of a rollercoaster (loved some parts but others felt like a bit of a drag) and in a way I kind of wish they had created this game using the same art style as the first. Most of the puzzles are solved using trail and error and your trusty hacking tool and i found that items in my inventory were a bit worthless and never used for puzzle solving or to progress the game.

The game was a little buggy like people clipping through furniture or floating in the air. Also camera angles go a bit crazy during dialogue or some npc will just randomly appears on top of you but there wasn’t anything that broke the game.

BASS2 is definitely worth a play through. But for me it was a slight disappointment in the puzzle department.

Glitch

I love the game so far, but I am currently stuck in the reflections spa playing as Joey. When I go to power down a chair it powers down but I can’t leave that screen. No matter how many times I swipe the app up or X out of the app every time I press the power down button on a chair I can’t leave that screen. I would rate the game a 5 star but I currently can’t progress. I really enjoy the game and would like to continue playing. Please take a look devs, I would really appreciate it.

Story is great controls are eh

I really enjoyed playing this game. The story took a bit to get started but after it did,I couldn’t put the game down.I only have two issues with the game first the controls are rough. I don’t know how you could fix them, it’s just kind of tough to get around. You end up doing circles quite a bit, when all you’re trying to do is go up some stairs. My next issue which isn’t that bad is the inventory system is kind of hard to go through when you have to do it multiple times in a puzzle. Other than that the puzzles really make you think. I had to look up a couple things. Overall great game with the controls are fixed easily a five star game

Stunning adventure apart from one major issue

Probably the best adventure game on the IPad, after being a huge fan of the original all those years ago, I was concerned that this wouldn’t be as good, or completely miss the feel of the original. I honestly didn’t have to be worried, as not only does it capture the feeling of the original, I might even go as far to say it improves on it. It truly is the best adventure game I’ve played on iPad, or at least it would be apart from one major issue.

The constant and annoying crashes back to the iPad menu, every darn time you try to move locations. Sadly I’m now at a part trying to go to the gala, where it just will not progress to the next location and instead keeps throwing you out time and time again, which obviously means no more progression.

It would honestly get 5 stars and highly recommended if it wasn’t for the fact it’s just so unstable. Sadly in its current state I can only give it 3 stars, and to be fair I think that’s being generous as it has such game breaking issues at the mo.

Response from developer

I am so sorry about the Aspiration Gala crash which happened on certain devices, but has since been fixed. Also the game has been substantially optimised. Three stars is generous given the problems - if you do have the chance, then please do get latest and continue - you should find the game substantially improved. Thanks :-)

Worth a play through

The game isn’t terribly long, it’s a good bite sized mobile game. Most of the characters are fun and the dialog was witty. Puzzles vary from super easy to moderately challenging, without being totally frustrating. I never experienced game breaking glitches like others have reported; however towards the end of the game I saw more graphical glitches in the cut scenes. Think the biggest issue with the game is the pacing. The start of the game is a bit slow and drawn out, requiring you to talk to each NPC and explore the area. But even though the game world looks expansive, most of it is backdrops that cant be interacted with. As you get towards the end of the game, it almost feels like last call and you start getting rushed to finish the objectives. Instead of puzzles that require multiple interactions, you get a puzzle that can be solved with in one step. Ultimately, it’s a decent and charming adventure game that lacks depth to really hook the player. Still, it’s worth at least one play through!

Worth the 26 year wait

If you weren’t obsessed with and influenced by the Nineties golden age of adventure games (Lucas Arts, Revolution, Sierra) it’s probably hard to imagine the significance of its release. Like Thimbleweed Park, this game could have gone a long way resting on the nostalgia appeal that comes with its legacy, but Beyond A Steel Sky feels smooth, contemporary and original enough to bring the franchise right up to date without the feeling of a significant ‘gap’ 😉 between the two instalments. Beautiful graphics, clever puzzles and gameplay and a rich nuanced story all come together to make a fantastic game. It’s the single reason I signed up for Arcade.

Next . . A new Broken Sword game in this format? Please . .

Thank you so much! :-)

AMAZING

One of if not the best game I have ever played I highly recommend it to everyone:]

A worthy successor

As a huge fan of the original I was very worried that this sequel would not live up to its predecessor. I was wrong. The was excellent, the puzzles were challenging but reward perception, and the scenery was gorgeous. It also barely raised the temp of my iphone 11 even playing for half a day straight. There were no gamebreaking bugs on my walkthrough, as some others have reported so that was good. There were some visual bugs here and there, crazy eyes when characters were ‘acting’. The odd dodgy camera angle during a cutscene and one bit in the museum where the game didn't really explain how I completed an objective but rolled to a custscene in a different location anyway. None were dealbreakers, and overall I still rate this 5 stars. Please please make more like this 🙏🏽

Probably best Apple Arcade game (so far)

So far so good. Always loved Revolution games and this doesn’t disappoint and was the reason I got Apple Arcade. There are a few tweaks required (which will probably come over time) such as text size and control movement but these for me don’t detract from the game itself. Another great Revolution game and for me easily the best Apple Arcade game so far.

If I was to put a negative down, although I am enjoying the game, at a choice I do prefer the more traditional point and click approach like previous Revolution games which I hope returns with the next Broken Sword (assuming there is a new one coming...)?

Update: the more you play the better this game gets. Great game/story-line, good controls. Definitely recommend, another great Revolution game.

Beautiful...but buggy

Love games of this genre having grown up with LucasArts point n click adventures as well as really enjoying the first BASS. However, this experience has been really frustrating with a lot of app crashes & restarts. Even with the frustrations I’ve enjoyed it and lived with them. The game looks amazing, story and world development is fantastic but now at 6hrs odd playing time I’ve hit a fatal bug that causes the game to crash no matter what I do. So sad, was hoping the most recent update would fix the issue but it has not. Will have to let this go and check back in a few months/years to see if the issue is fixed... 😥
