Version History of Out

1.3

January 25, 2021

It has been quite a long time since the last update and while I am still working on some more fundamental changes to OutRun this update also marks a huge step in the evolution of this app. I am very happy to announce that OutRun will now be available in ELEVEN additional languages which brings us to a total of thirteen and all of that thanks to a few really great people, who can be found in this project's README inside the source-code repository. Other than that not much has changed in this version: - There is a new contributor tab in settings, listing all the people who have considerably added to OutRun - and the source-code button was moved from 'Support' to 'App-Info' And that is that. If you have any questions or feedback, feel free to reach out at outrun@tadris.de. Tim, the Developer.

After receiving a trademark complaint "OutRun" will now be called "Out-Run" in the UK. This update has the main purpose of addressing this complaint. Additionally it contains the following bug fixes: - sometimes data was not added properly to Apple Health, this should now be fixed - ascending and descending altitude were swapped in the statistics, now they are in the right order - there have been some style issues because of changes in iOS 14, everything should look normally again And for this update nothing more changed. This release only contains a few critical bug fixes, which needed to be fixed fast. Specifically I am talking about: - way too long waiting times when wanting to record a workout due to a rounding error in the apps logic - app crashes because of inconsistencies in the data - map views having the wrong appearance - an alert talking about there being an error in the logic supposed to record the workouts, even though that logic worked just fine And that is it when it comes to changes in this version. If you have any questions or feedback, feel free to reach out at outrun@tadris.de. Tim, the developer.

It has been way too long since the last release, many of you have reached out and even asked if the project will still be continued, and I'm glad to be able to share some very exciting news regarding that. OutRun was never a project for profit, I always just wanted a simple fitness tracker that just does its job and does not need me to hand over all my data to some random company. That is why I decided to make OutRun not only free, but also open-source from this day on. Thank you all so much for your support, I really could not have done it without you and I hope now that the app is free you will be able to recommend it to even more people. But now let's get into what changed in this update: - You can now finally pause a workout if you want to take a break and in addition to that the app will also automatically pause if it detects that you are not moving. This was a pretty highly requested feature, so I hope you will enjoy it. - When finishing a workout you will now get the ability to continue it through a neat little dialog, which will also enable you to discard or save the workout (the latter happening automatically after a certain time). - There is a share feature now, which you can use to share individual workouts as OutRun-Backups or GPX-file. - Starting a workout is now faster, because you will not be asked what kind of workout you want to record anymore. To get the old dialog you can still long-press the plus button on the main screen, but you can also just tap the type on the recording screen and even change it after you started the workout. The default type of workout to record can be set in settings. - Two more workout types were added: OutRun now also supports hiking and skating - When editing non-essential information like a comment for a workout there now will not be a dialog that it could be fake anymore, this was due to the mechanism behind workout editing and is not fixed one last thing: - I hope I finally got to fix the crashing issue a number of people were having, at least sort of. The crashes were due to the map on the recording screen drawing too much performance. People affected by this problem can now just turn the map off in settings to prevent those crashes until a permanent solution is found. After more than two weeks of frustration I'm glad I can finally present the fix for these annoying crashes some of you have been experiencing. This updates contains lots of changes under the hood, not really worth getting into, the important thing to know is that your workouts should record more reliably now. Due to the extensive testing and trying to find a solution I had to push the new features aside for a while, but I will get back to them now. If you have any questions or feedback, feel free to reach out at outrun@tadris.de. Tim, the developer.

This is just a very small update. The only things that changes are the settings descriptions to make some actions clearer and that the 'Import All' button in the Apple Health import section is now working again. If you have any questions or feedback, feel free to reach out at outrun@tadris.de. Tim, the developer.

Just a few days ago I published this app. The response was phenomenal, I would never have expected so much positive and motivating feedback. My expectations where more than exceeded. But as life goes the first release was far from perfect. So here is what changed: - This will be most relieving for all the people hesitant to give this app 'Always' location authorisation (which I fully support btw): The app now works with just 'While In Use' authorisation, although when you already installed the initial release you have to go into the iOS Settings and change the permission to 'Never' and then back, so the system realises the change. You know that it worked when there is a blue dot around your time or a blue status bar when you go to the home screen, while recording. Please be sure to check before recording the next workout. - Some people wanted the ability to sort their timeline, this additionally to filtering for races is now a feature (with more functionality coming with a later release). - Additionally to being able to change between current speed and rolling pace for the recording stats while you can now also have rolling speed and the overall pace. - There was a nasty bug for all the people in the US and UK where the unit conversion was a bit messed up. Everything should function normally now, but you might still want to check the Settings page for your weight and manually edited workouts, because there might be inconsistencies. - When stopping a recording, previously it was very easy to accidentally click 'Cancel' and lose the entire workout (believe me, it happened more than once). Now the app asks for confirmation before resetting the data, so you can still save your workouts even if you slipped. - I also tried to fix a bug where for some people workout routes would not properly be loaded from Apple Health, I could not replicate the issue myself though, so there is no way to check if it worked, until I hear back from the people that told me about the issue. - Then there are all the small things, like typos, smaller bugs or just general improvements. Nothing really worth mentioning. I hope you will enjoy this version even more than the last one. For everyone hoping for other features: I'm working on it, it might take some time before you see the big changes rolling out though, but they will come eventually. Price History of Out

Description of Out

There are a lot of running apps out there, but they all have something in common: they are either full of ads, are highly expensive or simply are and look very outdated. Out-Run tries to solve this with a clean and modern look and being 100% free. In addition to that Out-Run is also one of the few running apps that do not require you to create an account, all information is stored locally and thereby protected from any data leaks or privacy scandals. And if you think: "Where is the catch?" - there is none, you can even have a look at the source code and confirm everything being said here, because Out-Run is fully open-source (source-code: https://github.com/timfraedrich/OutRun ). # MAJOR FEATURES - Keep full control over your data - Record your outdoor workouts (Running, Walking, Hiking, Cycling and Skating) - View detailed statistics - Export your workouts as GPX or OutRun-Backup (.orbup) - Fully customise the recording process - Synchronise with Apple Health I hope you love Out-Run just as much as I loved making it and if you find anything I should improve upon, please let me know. Tim, the developer.

  • Great App!

I really enjoyed using Strava with all its capabilities and nice interface. However, the terrible thing about it is its lack of privacy. You can set your own privacy settings of course, but Strava has access to all your information. I thought, “Oh no! I’m going to lose stats, and have to go old school and log it all manually!” But Outrun has been a great replacement. Been walking and hiking so far and will add cycling in the summer. Outrun is totally privacy focused with a slick interface and it works really well. No crashes so far. I haven’t really tried the export feature yet so I can log my workouts in an external application but I’ll try that soon.

  • Almost perfect, but…

I previously gave this app a 5-star review for being an easy-to-use and privacy-respecting fitness tracker. Generally speaking, it does what it should well and with a slick interface to boot.
However, I just had the app crash on me while saving the results of a 10-hour hike through the mountains. I ended up losing the recording so I was pretty bummed. Looking at other reviews, it seems this isn’t a completely one-off occurrence.
So, as much as I love the app and what it stands for in the midst of the pseudo-social media platforms that mainstream fitness trackers, I’ll likely be switching back to Strava myself to avoid running the risk of losing another big hike or run.

  • A sane offline runtracker

OutRun is a fully offline, privacy-respecting, free run tracker on iOS. For some reason every mainstream alternative has tacked-on social media elements, requires an account, and/or shoves paid “features” in your face incessantly. OutRun has none of these anti-features, and I really appreciate that. It also has a very clean and interface, something I usually don’t expect in open source apps, and it’s very simple and easy to use.
I’m using a 2016 iPhone SE running iOS 15 and have had no issues with crashes or instability after a month of using the app. Can recommend whole-heartedly.
