Charged for the whole year

Accidently forgot to cancel my subscription. They charged me 150$ once I reached out to customer support they did not want to refund me. Money grab operation ongoing...

Fast and courteous Resolution of recurring billing error.

The support is well organized and clear about how to correct what needs to be to be corrected and a clear way to request what you want. I especially like the explanation of what had been done when my credit card failed. I still had access to the service but within certain upgrades. No anxiety about what now? Easy to work with and get back what I realize is an invaluable resource in today’s increasingly info dense internet. And real value is added by the content summaries. Thank you!!!

Thank you for this wonderful review for our support team! I'll make sure to pass them on.

Best out there but app has a few annoying bugs

I’ve tried quite a few of these services and this is far and away the best. It delivers a conciseness that is not matched while also providing perspectives from other books.

That said the app has a few bugs that are extremely annoying.

1) when your alerted in your notifications about a new book. You don’t always see the title and when you click on it Shortform opens to your last page (this is even happened when I had swiped it closed). Now the notification is gone, and you can’t find the book.

2) now you’re on a journey to go through the sections maybe to find the book whether that’s a newcomers or just the section of the topic that you were reading. Inevitably as you scroll down the forces closed. The only way I’ve successfully browse the categories is on my desktop.

We appreciate your feedback and are glad you enjoy the quality of our summaries. We understand your frustration with the bugs that you found and will work to improve our app's performance. Thank you for your patience and continued support.

Almost there

By far the best summaries when comparing to other apps, but often the app is pretty slow and doesn’t remember your place. The voice recordings are almost unlistenable.

Great customer service

When I couldn’t find a title, the team quickly found it and replied to me. Thank you.

Excellent summaries, app needs some bug fixing.

The summaries are excellent and much better than other apps. They summarise the whole argument rather than a random selection of key points as other apps do. Also love the references to other books and the critical analysis. The app has some bugs, however, including an annoying issue with highlighting only working randomly.

Why Search function is so slow!

I really like the concept, but it bothers me a lot whenever I need to use the search function. I don’t particularly appreciate watching the yellow circles. In my opinion, the app needs some infrastructural investment.

Mini College course in a Summaru

As a lawyer I do a lot of analytical reading. I appreciate Shortform summaries which accurately review the authors ideas and arguments. They also present counterpoint ideas and arguments from other leading authors. These summaries are more like a mini college course on the subject. Most summaries are about 30 minutes, which gives more time for better analysis than the usual 15-minute summaries from other services. I gain a better understanding of many ideas in an entertaining capsule.

"Mini college course" is truly an awesome way to describe our content! We'll be stealing it. 😉 If you need further assistance or book requests, please don't hesitate to let us know. Have a great day!

Impressive

I don’t have as much time to read as I’d like, but Short Form has been a lifesaver. Their thorough analysis of each book provides better understanding and clarity, making it easier to grasp key concepts quickly. Highly recommended.

No partial refund and bias

Note: if you are outside of the trial period you are 100% stuck with that subscription, no refunds.

Also note: In terms of content, I didn’t explore much out of the realm of philosophy. The summaries and condensed chapters were decent, but there were notes salt and peppered throughout which I felt were unnecessary and at times biased and intrusive on the reading experience…things you wouldn’t experience simply reading the book.

TLDR used it a couple times and now I’m stuck with a 365 day non refundable subscription.

Response from developer

We're so sorry to hear about what happened and for the confusion. There must have been a misunderstanding regarding your subscription, and we would love to connect with you regarding this matter. Can you please contact us at help@shortform.com? And we'll be happy to help resolve the issue. As for your content feedback, I understand that you might be looking for a condensed version of the book, a straight summary of it. At Shortform, we do something that we think is more valuable - placing the book's key ideas in context with other important ideas from other books and ideas. We think that generally people read books to solve a problem and understand ideas better, and less often to understand what this single person had to say only. That’s the function of the commentary - it’s not to insert our personal opinions, but to cite other sources and thinkers to build a more complete understanding of the ideas. We plan to take this approach to covering other topics, like news and politics. For example, instead of just covering a single source, which can be biased, we will take the top 5 sources and synthesize a greater understanding - where they agree, and where they disagree. This helps people understand all sides of an issue, which is helpful to reduce the polarization and narrow-mindedness that all societies are encountering. I know that the way the content is currently structured can be disruptive - book idea, our commentary, book idea, our commentary, etc. We're working on ways to make this more fluid, like batching up our commentary into bigger blocks. Finally, the way we create and structure our content defends our content under fair use copyright law. We do not intend for our book guides to replace the original books, for many reasons, and we genuinely want to produce content that helps people understand the book’s ideas better.
