  • Absolutely Horrendous

Well. I had hoped this would help me digitize my old film from high school.

The app is horrible. There is no other way to say it. The FREE app from Kodak is far superior to this. I don’t know if it was their first attempt, but it went horribly wrong somewhere. Not even sure HOW it got released!

I tried it two ways with the same bad results. I tried the suggested screen method, and I used the little cardboard “mobile film scanner” from Kodak. Color casts abound. Skin tones were awful.

I even tried using a professional light box (remember them?). Sam results.

Big disappointment, especially knowing how well their Photomyme app performs. I think they got ahead of themselves. It might do ok with black and white, but the free Kodak app work well, and it’s not $6 per month.

And, fwiw, subscription software should be illegal. If I don’t need server services. Why do I need to pay for them?? We left Adobe and went to Affinity over that crap. And we loved the switch. Just putting it out there!

  • Great App

Just getting started with a few negatives for which we have not seen the pics before. Great app and will organise to not get more pics. Thanks

    Thanks! :)
  • Amazing!

Really easy to use and really helpful! Brought a negative of my grandfather that my dad had never seen before back to life and recoloured it!

  • Pretty good

I have heaps of old old negatives from my grandfather that I have no idea what I’ll find so wrapped I’ve found this app. I find doing the white light on computer makes it’s pixelated I’ve had better success with white/light box but not a bad little app. Probably someone you’d use and download as many keepers and then unsubscribe after a month as only have so many negatives. I even used a old glass negative and have a pic of 4 fellas from someone’s past , I have no idea who they are 🙌

Thank you for the review. You need to hold the negative 2 inched away from the computer screen in order not to have the pixel from the screen transfer onto the photo :)
  • Not good.

I looked at the feedback the developer gave others to make sure I was using the app properly, but it still did not work well. I figured it wouldn't work well, it seemed too good too be true. Scanning is very tedious at home, so I thought it was worth a shot. Considering this is a monthly paid subscription it definitely doesn't work well. My worst amateur flat bed scans are 1000x better than these photos. I would give this app a better review if it was free or one time fee of a dollar. It wouldn't produce useable results, but it could be used for a simple preview if a back light is not available. I could also see a free option be useful for someone who quickly wants to show their older family members some kind of image of their old negatives, but I'd never post or show any of the images I got from the app. The advertisement video is very misleading.

  • Works well but not worth a subscription

The app is pretty straight forward to use and it does a good job auto cropping the picture. It is hard to find a good backlight source where you don’t pic up other objects with glare. My biggest complaint is that you have to be on subscription to use it. I will never buy an app on subscription unless it is per year. This app has no reason to be on a monthly subscription, other than to take money from people that forget to unsubscribe. There is no update content or development that happens beyond regular updates for iOS system updates. I would gladly pay a set price for this. $5-10$ is fair, in my opinion. Reach out to me developers if you want to make a one time sale. It would improve your rating. 👍🏻

  • Honestly terrible.

This app is quite awful to say the least. The so called “auto cropping” feature only seemed to work once out of my several dozen tries. The colours are supremely off compared to scans I have done with the exact same negatives using even amateur equipment, which for me is the biggest issue. Also the scans from the app seem as though they are altered to be more grainy and have more noise in the images than there should be, almost like those vintage Super 8 emulator apps. Even just taking a photo and reversing the negative in photoshop myself is significantly better and only takes marginally more time and effort. Would not recommend unless you don’t have any other options to scan negatives.

    edit:

After receiving a response from the developer with their typical “negative has to be two inches from computer screen and the camera needs to see the side holes” response that every review gets, I have a bit more to say.

It isn’t a problem with the distance from the backlight or the framing of the negative. I read the instructions before trying to scan my negatives and when I had poor results I read the reviews. Holding the negative the supposed proper distance, or closer or further, has little to no effect on the grainy results and even less on the washed out and dull colours.

Upon further consideration, would give zero stars to the app if I could, and negative stars to the copied and pasted response nearly every review gets from the developer.

The negative has be 2 inches (5 cm) away from the computer screen in order not to have the image pixelated. The camera needs to see the side holes. Please try again and let us know how it goes.
  • Best app I tried

I tried 4 negative scanning apps and this was by far the best! It easily crops and recognizes photos. Easy to export. Quick turn over between scans.

A few tips. Follow their directions. Hold the negative at least 2 inches away from the white screen otherwise it will look pixelated. Hold the phone as close to the negative as you can. Use the voice control feature. Practice. Try a few different angles and a few different distances until you get the best look. Once I had my chosen method I was able to scan 5 rolls of film in an hour or less.

(I had a tiny bit of trouble finding a good solid white background but eventually I opened a blank note and turned my brightness all the way up.)

I hooked clothes pins over my laptop screen with a flexible wire to hold the negative still and away from the screen. Then I was able to easily steady my iPhone near the negative to get a good shot. Another option would be to steady your phone with a tripod or kick-stand. My scans were not as good as the originals were, but these were pictures that were lost to me. It was wonderful to see them again.

Thank you for these comments! Just one thing, the camera needs to see the side holes in order to have the best automatic cropping ;) If you'd like to suggest a feature or an improvement to the app, please write in to us at support@photomyne.com. We'll do our best to incorporate the same and earn a five star rating from you.
  • Not as advertised

As a professional film film photographer with years of film scanning experiences. I was really excited to try this app. It looked super fun and user friendly.
The quality of the images is no where near what the adds show or what the tutorial showed. The camera doesn’t focus well, there a lot of motion blur with the handheld phone and the color is super muddy. I spent some time with it and really tried not make it work by troubleshooting to the best of my ability. I couldn’t get any images to scan well or look anything like what this app says it’s capable of. Not impressed, pretty disappointed, I want my money back.
