  • waste of time don’t bother

Total waste of time. Do not bother. Even if the machine says it’s empty it probably has a line of three people. Each person takes at least 5 min considering the machine can take 50 bottles from each person. By the time you reach the machine as the fourth person you’re gonna see a full machine after waiting 15 minutes. Then you have to meet with customer service that complains that you’d have to put it in a plastic bag etc etc. Totally not worth the time. If you care about CRV go to a recycling center. The purpose of this machine is to absolve the grocery store of the obligation to take back bottles.

  • A decent effort

This service (this app and the machines) presents a decent effort to bring a more user friendly recycling and CRV refunding effort to the USA. Whilst other parts of the world are way ahead, things move a lot slower here.

Both the app and the machines work reasonably well, especially for seemingly a very small organization. It definitely has issues but it’s noticeable that things are actively worked on and incrementally improved. However, you may occasionally encounter a non working machine and will have to return later.

Plastic recycling must be a tough business and keep in mind that not a lot of money can be made here. I have met a developer at one of the machines and it’s clear there is some passion behind this endeavor.

I was very sceptic at first but interacting with the service and its support has made me continue using it.

  • Doesn't work

Most of the time this app doesn't work. It can't even reach their server to login or signup. I've tried on several networks both WiFi and cellular, so it is their servers not the network. One time the machine wasn't even working, probably because it also could not connect to its servers. Once it was working, but the machine was full. There is a feature which will tell you where machines are and if they are full, but sometimes you can't even get to that feature. The app has trouble with adding to the Apple Wallet.

It's a nice idea, but considering more reliable machines have been around since the 80s, it's not impressive at all. They need to spend much more time focusing on the minimum viable product and less time on all the bells and whistles nobody can use because the whole basic product is broken.

Go to your local recycling center instead and don't waste your time with this.

  • Recycling app down

    App not working… can’t connect
  • Literally unusable

App hangs trying to sign up. Machine has trouble taking and scanning items. All in all, good idea but laughably bad implementation. I’ve seen working reliable machines to take crv items more than a decade ago.
  • Love this machine❤️

I found setting up the app and using the recycling machine to be super easy and I always get right amount of cash for my bottles. Surprised at the negative reviews 🤔
  • Terrible

I want to complain about the deposit machine. I was glad to see that US finally caught up with other countries for recycling glass/plastic containers. I found this machine in our local Safeway grocery store. It has all the bells and whistles (contactless login, link to PayPal account for payment, and automatic recognition of container type), but it simply failed me! The machine doesn’t recognize most of bottles/cans. The only thing that it was able to recognize was plastic water bottles, but even that needed to be repositioned/turned until the scanner recognized it. It also signed off while I was using it (which means I lost all my prior deposits).

  • The machine is not scanning

The machine won’t scan my phone and ate bottles without paying me anything
  • a waste of time and money given back

this machine is a waste of time you can only put one bottle/can onto the belt at a time and only 50 pieces max for the day! Gallon bottles do not fit either. for this its not worth it if you have a lot of recycle pieces.

    Developer Response

Hello, Thank you for your feedback. Recycling in California is regulated by strict regulations and guidelines that determine some of the requirements of the Olyns Cubes. Our machines are designed to provide convenient recycling for those who recycle frequently and who do not wish to travel long distances to commercial recycling centers. Although the machines are designed to accept the vast majority of container sizes, they do not accept containers over 2 liters. For such containers, we have scheduled times for drop off at the machines with an Olyns representative - the signage on the machine details the times for each machine.
  • The machine is full when we arrived

It would be better if the app can show if the machine is full or not.
