  • Not user friendly

They updated this app and its worthless. The older version was more user friendly. Why in earth would you make it difficult to understand road conditions when a person wants to travel? There are more steps and trying to figure out road conditions is difficult! Shame on you guys!! Horrible
  • Useless!

It’s now 9:25 pm with a winter weather advisory on my weather app. The information on this useless MDT511app was last updated at 1:46 this afternoon! Also terrible to use where are the cameras! This used to be so simple. Fire the clowns that conceived this trash and bring back the old app!!!
  • Overall a good start

I wasn’t a big user of the old app, but this looks like an improvement to me and I’m likely to use it more often. I just have a few quibbles with how the legend is implemented.

First, it would be helpful if it could be parked on the screen, off to the side somewhere, and could be toggled on or off as the user gains familiarity with the various colors, etc. As it stands, I have to go back and forth between the legend and the map several times to figure out which route to take.

Second, the legend would be simpler to decipher if it were context-sensitive, showing only the layers that the user has turned on.

Third, the legend is dismissed by tapping an orange checkmark, which isn’t consistent with the rest of the app, where you can just tap anywhere on the map to make an overlay go away.

    All in all, good work!

Thank you for your thoughtful feedback, No Eddie, and for your four-star rating! The new app has a lot of great functionality. We agree with the needs for the legend, and the development team has already been working on its accessibility as you mentioned. For more information, to give more feedback, or if you have questions about any of the new features, email us at MT511@iteris.com. We will do our best to help. For statewide road conditions, you can also call 511 within Montana, 800-226-7623 outside Montana, or visit MDT511.com before your trip. Safe travels, and thanks again!
  • Terrible

I use it on my iPad and almost impossible to click on a road and get an answer. Most of the time nothing comes up. This morning Billings and Bozeman were “not available”. Pretty useless for vital information.
  • As expected

Every time they re-invent the wheel it works less efficiently. This app is no different. It should not require a degree in computer science to operate it. The old version was much more user friendly. But that’s why some college educated idiot had to change it. Because it was useful. And it worked in seconds. I could pull off the highway , check the road report, and be traveling again in two minutes or less. But now it’s at least twenty minutes. Or longer. If this required a subscription I would not pay for this garbage.

Thank you for your feedback and for using the app. We apologize for the frustration you are experiencing. For road reports, tap the top-left menu (three lines), then scroll down to Reports. Tapping Reports will lead to a pop-up with four report options that are updated every ten minutes – Alerts, Closures, and Incidents; Road Condition Report; Construction Report; and, Load & Speed Restrictions. It should get you back on traveling again in two minutes or less, like before! If the display seems complex, you can toggle on/off many of the map features via the top-right menu (Map Overlays) so that the map is simpler and easier to read. The legend for Road Conditions can be found by tapping the blue key in the lower-right corner of the map. If you would like additional assistance, or to provide more feedback, feel free to email us at MT511@iteris.com. After you try out these options, please consider coming back and updating your review. We want to make sure the system meets the needs of our past, current, and future users. The legacy MDT511.com and MDT 511 apps served Montana well for many (15+) years, but they ran on older code that was getting harder to support with modern browsers and mobile devices. For statewide road conditions, you can also call 511 within Montana, 800-226-7623 outside Montana, or visit MDT511.com before your trip. Thank you again for using the MDT 511 Travel Info app. Safe travels.
  • Cumbersome

I find this new app is harder to use and not user friendly. The key comes up in the middle of the map. It would be more useful on the side of the map. Why aren’t the cameras on the map where they could be easily available? Having to figure out the highway numbers to use the camera is frustrating. I don’t use this app while driving.

  • Bring back the old map

This “new” and updated map is worthless, hard to read, not user friendly very cumbersome. Where did the snow plow cams go? This app is not an upgrade to the old one, definitely a down grade.
  • What was wrong with the old app???

No logical reason to completely overhaul the old app that people never had issues with. Whoever came up with the ridiculous design and development decisions in this should be fired immediately. It’s like Montana outsourced this entire new app upgrade project to some third world Bangladesh app developers for pennies on the dollar.

App is a complete disaster that causes more people Issues than helps. Pathetic

    Developer Response

Thank you for the feedback and for using the new app. We apologize for the frustration you are experiencing. The legacy travel information system was well beyond end of life. The application code was difficult to support and did not always function well with modern internet browsers and mobile operating systems. The legacy system failed multiple times over the last few years and MDT was genuinely concerned the next failure could be unrecoverable, leaving the state with no program. In researching alternatives, MDT chose to go with a COTS solution that was already in use by other states. Benefits of a COTS generally include quicker delivery times, less implementation risk, lower life-time cost of ownership, and continuous software improvements. While the new system does have many more options than the old system, it also has the ability to customize the view to meet individual needs. These features, once set, will perpetuate from session to session. Users that only want to see incidents, conditions, and cameras can limit their display to those three items. We understand your disappointment in the product, but rest assured MDT's sole focus is delivering accurate, timely content to Montana travelers. We will continue to work to improve the product and user experience. For additional assistance, please email MT511@iteris.com. Safe travels.
  • Terrible

Whose idea was it to change this map? The old system was functional and easy to read… this new system it’s impossible to follow unless maybe you’re a computer geek. Give us the option of going back to the old map so we don’t have to deal with this BS….Very frustrating and dangerous to the Montana traveler

  • Ruined a Useful App

The old version of this app was simple and easy to see at a quick glance exactly what to expect on the road. Even people who were not tech savvy could figure out the information they needed. This new version not intuitive at all. For example, where is the legend?! The old version also made it easy to pull up traffic cam photos of conditions. Very disappointed that a previously useful app is now gone.

Thank you for your feedback, OccasionalRater, and for using the new app. We apologize for the frustration you are experiencing. The legend for Road Conditions can be found by tapping the blue key in the lower-right corner of the map. There are two ways to access traffic cameras. The top-right menu contains Map Options, including Other Cameras (under Features) and RWIS Cameras. Be sure to toggle on both of those options so that camera icons will appear on the map. You can toggle on/off many other map options via this same menu as you desire. Another way to view cameras is via the top-left menu on the map. Under Traffic Cameras, there are lists of cameras and images by route. We hope that helps you find the cameras you are looking for. If you would like additional assistance, feel free to email us at MT511@iteris.com. After you try out these options, please consider coming back and updating your review. We want to make sure the new system meets the needs of our current and future users. The legacy MDT511.com and MDT 511 apps served Montana well for many (15+) years, but they ran on older code that was getting harder to support with modern browsers and mobile devices.
