If you wanted to use this app for Japanese, don’t bother. There are very few shows and the majority of them only have 4/12 episodes translated, so you can’t even watch the whole thing.
You can get subscriptions to other streaming services *and* kanji learning services that have more content for cheaper.
Also, if you try the free trial and wait for the reminder email they claim they’ll send before charging you for 3 months of the service, it won’t ever come. They’ll just start charging you without sending the reminder email - probably because so many people try to jump ship after seeing the slim selection.
This type of application is just perfect for anyone wanting to improve their linguistic skills for the given languages! I love how you can review the vocabulary via flashcards! The only thing is they could improve the translations. E.g., for German the don’t give the full correct translation for trennbar verbs where the prefix is separated from the verb, or with French they don’t give the correct translation for idiomatic expressions. There are two things that the programmers could work on for those two languages. Otherwise, I love using this application and plan on continuing to use it daily!
I watched season one of a show and I had toe best experience and raved to all of my friends about this app. But then when I got to season 2 all the translations were very sloppily done. Sometimes I tapped the word in the subtitle and there was no translation. Someone went into a room to say hi to someone else and the translation was “bye guys”. I think the app concept is really good but the quality goes downhill for some of the shows and it really needs to be fixed before this app can achieve massive success. With that said I still enjoy the show and it’s helped me improve my French a lot.
I like using Lingopie. You get to choose from which country (if there is more than one) to learn your language. If the show is too fast you can adjust the speed and also read along.
I’m sure the issue is probably on me but I can’t review the words I learned. And I found that I can’t rewatch episodes I already watched.

I forgot my password and that’s my problem, BUT I never got an email to reset it when I request it. I eventually remembered my password and was able to login but once I paid for a subscription, all of the content was still locked. I really wanted to buy the lifetime Christmas deal too. I see that the DEVS have made a valuable app yet I feel I am being taken advantage of. I have over 50 language learning apps and I see this as potentially one of the best. But after paying for the monthly subscription and still not having access to, that’s not right.
I’ve had multiple times when a video just can’t be played, it will pause and then never play again without an app restart.
The button to go back to the menu from a video is so tiny and you have to randomly press other menu items so that the back button will even show up, and then good luck hitting it correctly before it disappears.
Mic recording isn’t working because it’s throwing errors on the server side. (Reported this bug we’ll see if they fix it).
Overall I’m really disappointed with this app, the desktop version works great and I wish the app was nearly as good but its full of too many shortcoming and bugs for me to recommend it at all.
I am enjoying the app so far with lots of options for different levels! Try this app out and see if it fits your life!
Great idea and the viewing selection is pretty decent. However, what’s the problem with the landscape mode? When accessing films I must turn my device to portrait, then play the selection. Can this be fixed so that the entire app can be used in landscape mode?
Real shows, you can choose to have foreign or English subtitles, or have both. Different shows from different regions, with different accents, etc.
Great stuff—hoping they put in second and subsequent seasons of series.
I thought this app looked like so much fun and helpful because when you don’t know a foreign language it appears as if the speakers speak too fast!! (I’ve found this especially true with Spanish & had a native speaker practically confirm it.) This app doesn’t give you much selection there’re not many shows and not many 20-22 minute episodes. (Maybe it’s a cultural thing to prefer 11 minute episodes.) But some of these shows were clearly not made by a Spanish, Columbian, Argentinan etc company. These are shows created by a companies from the USA that have been dubbed, translated with Spanish speakers to reach a wider audience. Not authentic. I tested German as well but, since I’m still a beginner, I’m not going to comment on that. Although the selection and run time seem to be there no matter what language you chose.

I'm sorry you feel that way about the content that we provide. All the shows on Lingopie are licensed from real Spanish speaking companies. They are definitely not dubbed. There is a large variety of shows from Spain, Mexico, Argentina, Columbia etc. The idea behind Lingopie is immersion and exposure to real TV from these countries so we never dub shows.
If you find the videos too fast you can simply slow it down with our playback speed option at the bottom of the video player. I hope that helps.
