  • Helpful App But Could Be Improved

For the last 6 weeks, my wife and I have been using this app which monitors your driving through your cell phone when it is in the car but also helps you earn money and a potential discount on your Amica insurance if you are a good driver.

Overall the app works well. My only complaint is that the app slams you with a negative score if you have to apply they brakes quickly. If another driver in front of you or a pedestrian behaves in an erratic way, sometimes you need to brake quickly. The app should not give you such a negative score if you have to brake quickly/hard one time during a trip.

Thank you for using the StreetSmart by Amica app. Our first priority is that our customers are driving safely. We work hard to make the scoring model dynamic to take into account inevitable situations like this which is why your overall score is based on the sum of many drives and one incident will not set you back. However, if you continue to have concerns about your hard braking ratings or would like us to provide best practices, please email us at streetsmartsupport@amica.com. Thank you again.
  • Hands down the best driving app

This app is so fair and honest. Other apps will not apply realistic driving scenarios as an engineer an acceleration or stop of more than 7 mph per second is VERY easy to exceed as you are leaving a light from a complete stop or having to stop in 40mph traffic bcz someone cut you off. HOWEVER, Street smart really took the time to have realistic parameters and its tracking is FAIR. If you can’t get a 100% with their app, sadly you are a risky driver. I’ve used State Farm, Safeco, ALLSTATE, and a couple others and by far this is thee best app hands down.

It’s a no brainer. It forces you to rethink your driving habits. You will become a better driver. You will save money at the pump due to increased fuel economy and your drive will be more relaxed. To top it off you will save money on your premiums.

The app has made me more conscious of my driving habits and to better anticipate conditions. However, it does grade negatively when using a nav app by pushing an iphone button to ask for directions.
  • Pretty good

I really like how speed, braking and phone use are registered as “events”. You can see the time and location where the event occurred. Unfortunately, scoring for distraction is too ambiguous. I contacted support and was informed that “some” metrics for distraction are playing music taking a hands free call etc. I saw my distraction score drop even though the app shows I have zero phone use. I suspect this happened when I use Siri to read a text message via CarPlay. I would like to see detailed reporting for distractions (like the other events). For example, show an event on the trip map where a hands free phone call occurred. The metrics for measuring distractions are not communicated well and this prevents behavior changes by the driver. I would also appreciate not getting achievement notifications while I’m driving. This seems obvious. The app is actively distracting me.

It would be nice if I could inform the app that I am a passenger during the ride rather than being required to wait until the ride has been scored (it’s easy to forget).

Hi Jon! Thank you for all of this feedback. Hands-free phone use and Bluetooth or car commands will not result in a distraction event or impact your phone use score, however screen tapping or swiping while the car is moving will. Minor distraction events will not appear on your trips as these minor events have little to no impact on your overall score. We appreciate you using the StreetSmart by Amica app, and we’ll keep your comments in mind as we continue to update it. Thanks again!

  • The app

I like the app but I wish I understood it. Sometimes when I use maps & the app will record it as phone use. It tells me I brake when I didn’t brake hard; except once when a teenager pulled out in front of me. I wish there was an explanation.
  • Battery hog, privacy issues

I really wanted to like this app. But there are two main reasons I'm deleting after just a few days.

If I forget to go back into settings after every drive and select "Never" for access to my location, my battery drops significantly until I notice my mistake and go turn it off. I hate battery hog apps.
The fact that I HAVE to go into settings after every drive and select "Never" is unnerving. They don't allow you to select "Only while using the app," it's either Always or Never. NO app gets 24/7 access to my precise location. That's an insane invasion of privacy how they track all users everywhere they go, not just on drives. I detest that.

  • Great great driving app!

This app has really helped my driving. I never realized how much I hard brake. It’s helped that a lot. Also keeps me off my phone completely when I drive. Really enjoy the way you can earn money/points as a good way to improve your driving and motivate you to drive better.

Been using it now for several weeks. Really like the different categories. Helping me do drive better.
