This app is lousy. It stops working every few days

Hey Toilet, We hear you. and we are working on this. Over Jan-Feb 2024 we spent a bunch of time updating the app to improve the reliability and stability of the recording system, the feedback so far is that it is much more stable and consistent in all aspects. Our code base was getting a little icky but these issues should be improved now. There are also now more support docs available on the Metric.coach website. If you give it another try I would love to hear your follow up feedback, feel free to email us community@metric.coach. - Jacob
  • Enjoyed using the app

It works pretty well, but it would be nice if they could integrate the Apple Watch and LiDAR that are part of the iPhone Pro line. The Apple Watch is a point of contact with a built-in accelerometer, which is closer to the bar and the LiDAR to get actual distance and more accurate reading of velocity with the camera. The app does an okay job, but the measurements are a bit off. The integration of allowing coaches to see their athletes' data is incredible, but with other devices, it is Standard practice. I can put a device that attaches to the barbell for 500 dollars, comes with a companion app, and it’s way more accurate. The downside of those devices is that they require an iPad and a mat for the laser to reflect on. I also can’t have the athlete use it at their will. They need to either own the device or have it on hand, But if you think about it, an iPhone Pro 12 can be found for less than that and an Apple Watch. There are over devices that run a couple of grand that, again, if you think about it, between your newest watch and iPhone, you're already in about that price point. It’s a great concept I hope they can expand on the accuracy and use available hardware instead of focusing on stop gap measures like giving me a notification that “I’m improving”.

Hi Jbarah, We have actually been recently externally validated against MOCAP and found to perform really well for accuracy. We have considered using the Apple Watch and like the idea of LIDAR also, but in our research into incorporating these technologies found they did not improve accuracy at all. In fact, the apple watch was a major step backwards from computer vision - delivering very erratic and inconsistent results. Something that is a known issue with other VBT hardware devices and wearables that have utilised accelerometer data - it is just too inconsistent.
  • Absolutely superb for optimising your training!

The app is brilliant. Superb for checking / tracking form and progression at the same time. I took an annual sub out after 5 days with no need to let the trial run out. Worth knowing that the more recent app releases have transformed the app so any older reviews you may not be applicable.

I’ve configured it for power (max/peak plus average) and rom metrics, as power is the output measure I’m most interested in and Rom is important as a proxy for form/fatigue. Through those metrics ( :) ) I can see more precisely what my fatigue levels are and conversely when I should be adding weight as progression.

Power also gives a new programming option for “max average power for x reps”, beyond just “max weight for x reps”, so effectively doubles the number of exercises.

It’s not just a “you don’t need an accelerometer / cord attached to the barbell” solution… video is actually better, particularly high frame rate video, as it gives you form analysis, not just power and bar path, given that you can calculate for that at all, which nearly all other apps can’t.

Honestly can’t recommend it highly enough if you are at all interested in optimising your performance with barbell exercises.

For avoidance of doubt, I’m not affiliated to the devs in any way. I’m a user of the most popular S&P app but wanted more performance analysis, so spent a long time looking at accelerometers and then came across this app by chance and quickly realised how powerful ( ;) ) an app it is and get the sense that it will only continue to get even better.

  • Hoping for data importation

Would be a 5 star review but was hoping to be able to import data from other vbt sources like velocity metics from my Beast Sensor or even the sensor itself to calculate everything.

Hey, Jacob here from Metric, Thats a great idea, we will add it to our ideas space for future features!
  • Great app

Excellent service and such great tool for athletic development and people who like gym. Would highly recommend.
  • Looks promising!

Found this via a video I saw on Instagram of somebody using it.. Tried for the first time today.

Tracking seems excellent, very very good for checking bar path.

I've never used velocity based training before so I can't speak to the accuracy of the velocity measurements (although I'm hoping they're relatively accurate!) but I do plan to use this moving forward in my training.

Thank you! We have an internal validation written up on the Metric website, hoping for some external validation studies to be published really soon!
  • Highly recommend!!

The best lifting app I’ve ever used! The data is so accurate and really helped my form!
  • Good App

I love this for providing more context and date for my training. Really helps with just seeing how speed is lost later on in an set. I would say to improve it, add pause variations so for the pro version it doesn’t affect data sets. Pro version is an faf to get too

    Developer Response

Pro does now feature pause metrics!
  • Great app and does what it’s set out to do

For not needing to buy any equipment this is a great tool. The vbt trackers go from 400 and up so for this to do what it does with nothing is amazing.
  • Take your training to the next level

Metric VBT is a must have for coaches and athletes looking to take their training to the next level. Its easy to use, accurate and my athletes really enjoy the feedback from their sets and reps.

No tedious setup up, just my phone, tripod and I am ready to record. 5 stars !
