This WAS a good app

I was using this app relatively recently, a couple months ago maybe.

But it all changed when the update happened. It was a fairly simple app that did a job and it did it well, in my opinion at least. But some recent update changed the layout of the app, and the functionality. It no longer is formatting things the same way and if you minimize it or even just your screen turns off because you looked away from your phone for too long figuring out why your puppy is exploding it now loses the conversion.

Oh, and just to say this, I considered paying for ot when it first gave the option to pay, not realizing yet that it had all the new problems, and it actually wouldn’t let me pay for it.

Pretty useless

This app excels at converting various documents into the Bionic Reading® format. However, if you need to export the document into any kind of a word document, you can forget about it. It locks it into a PDF format, which is quite useless for my needs. If I need to use it to read some thing it’s awesome but if I need to use it to create a document that I can export into Microsoft Word, pages, or a teleprompter app, then it won’t work. Maybe I don’t understand the purpose or functionality of this app, but after paying $25 for it, I discovered that it really doesn’t meet my expectations.

I can never get it to work.

I can't get a safari or a chrome extent I on on my Ipad. The app does not work. It is very frustrating because I have absolutely loved reading with bionic reader on my desktop (when the extention would work there, which was hit and miss….by the way). This app, though, is horrendous. I will not convert a web link to a research article. It will upload the article but will not do anything with it. Tried it out on a few other sites just to see if it was some sort of stupid block on the article itself and it converts half of the website and not all the text or just converts nothing. When I click on “process” or “continue” whatever pops up, it takes me to a blank white screen, and that little symbol on the app page (arrow pointing up) that says I need to be a premium member to access, leads nowhere. I don't even know what it does! Is it a share symbol? The hidden secret to make the app work? When I try to see what “premium”is all about, it again, takes me to a blank white page. My adhd brain gives up. I would pay to make this work on my tablet! Name your price! I have no more hyperfixation energy left in me to trouble shoot this. Nadia. It's take 2 hours of my life. Please let me know when this works again or works finally?

And yes, all the things are updated on my end.

DO NOT USE THIS

It does not convert most PDFs accurately, even when not protected; and it does not convert most epub files either. It would be less useless if they actually worked on having different file formats available but they don’t. And do not be tricked by their advertising being able to do PDFs; you can download but not upload the files. When I requested a refund, they said they’re “working on bugs” but these are not bugs, just false advertising.

Terrible product. ADHD readers are better and less
expensive and easier to use.

Hi ashon c. No, PDFiles cannot be uploaded. We don’t know who told you that. You can download your text as a PDF, as we describe on our website. You can find more information about our features on our website. Sorry to hear that you did not have a good experience and give us 1* for this. This app is garbage

I use the chrome extension and it works fine however the app is horrible. Despite paying the 17 cad for the month, it still says that I need to upgrade ……useless. Reached out to their contact but did not receive a response.

Second attempt to review

Let’s see if the review magically sticks this time. This pricing scheme is exploitative and prohibitive to the very disabled people it’s supposed to help. People with disabilities already bear extra expenses that are increasingly difficult to afford in this world. I cannot think of a logical reason for a recurring fee structure, especially an expensive one, except greed. Greed off the backs of those least able to bear the extra expenses. Shame on you all.

Edit: my review was published under someone else’s name and account, so the mealy mouthed answer about the “needing different subscriptions did not come to me. And that response is ludicrous. There are simple design choices that could solve where and when advertisements show up, and ignores the fact that a flat fee for the app is still a PAID subscription and should mean few to no ads anyway. So it is YOUR design choices and financial desires (ie GREED) driving this (awful) subscription model. Nice try.

Hi Dolphin. We understand your concern. Our surveys showed that our users (especially with ADHD, ADHS, dyslexia, with reading difficulties) need different subscriptions. That’s why we decided to use this model. You can use it for free. But if you like more features, there are even ways to customize your subscription. We think this is fair for everyone. For you and for us as developers of Bionic Reading®. Thank you for your understanding. Best regards from the Swiss Alps, Renato

Money Wasted

I signed in via Apple and attempted to upgrade my subscription through the app. Apple processed my payment and the App Store shows I have an active subscription. However, the Bionic App itself will not recognize my subscription and is still prompting me to upgrade. I signed out and back in a few times, hoping that would refresh it, but no luck. Wasted money. Going to try to see if I can get a refund through the Apple Store.

Free version useless

Works quite well for readability but the free version is useless because of the small character limit of about one paragraph/

if I have to read one paragraph of text I’ll just read it as is rather than go to the effort of copying pasting into the app -

It is very expensive for what it is too - $200aud a year? To bolden a few letters in text - my advice to the makers is make it a few bucks max because it is such an easy piece of software to copy - someone will make a free version online

Hi sweeneyyoung. Bionic Reading® gives an individual reading setting for each user. Fixation, Saccade and part of speech are just a few reading settings. We understand your concern. Our surveys showed that our users (especially with ADHD, ADHS, dyslexia, with reading difficulties) need different subscriptions. That’s why we decided to use this model. You can use it for free. Very buggy

Paid for the premium account but there’s a bug that won’t let me access any of the features. It continuously says I’m on the basic package but when I try to upgrade it says I’ve already upgraded.
