Leave a Review Japanese
The beginner learner’s best friend!
As someone relatively new to learning Japanese with a short attention span and a ton of self doubt, I found myself wanting to dip my toes into immersion by using a dictionary to search vocabulary. This app was my hero. It’s intuitive and easy to read, with a built in list system that lets you keep track of how many words you’ve searched for any given media or topic. Great for building study decks or reviewing vocab before a re-read attempt. Drawing kanji is very forgiving for beginners who aren’t experienced with stroke order, and even if that fails, the radical search is very easy to read and much easier to parse than a website like Jisho. Even as someone still very inexperienced, it’s made reading material relatively easy to get into. The motivation and patience to do so must come from within, im afraid, but if you have the fuel this app will be your engine.
I’ve been having a wonderful time playing games in japanese with the assistance of this app, and I don’t doubt that i’ll be deferring to it time and time again for many months as I continue my little journey.Show lessMy favorite dictionary app that I’ve ever used
I’ve downloaded a lot of dictionary apps for many different languages, and this one has been my favorite by far. The thing this app does better than others is a no ads, and a lack of friction with the search function.
Press the search button at the bottom left to start looking up a word. If you want to look up another word, instead of having to move your finger all the way up to the top and delete the word, you can tap the search button again and it will clear the word automatically and let you start typing with no other input. It is a small thing, but if you have to search dozens of words in a row it’s so helpful. I wish other dictionary apps had this feature.Show lessGreat resource, but lacking a few things
This app has been very useful in my Japanese learning journey. I am getting back into it after a long pause when I switched to learning Mandarin. Learning Mandarin has helped me greatly in understanding the way the brain learns languages. This app has a lot of similarities to Pleco (the perfect Mandarin learning app I dare to say), however, it is missing some features that would sky rocket it's utility for Japanese language learners.
For example, a scanner, a Japanese ebook upload feature, the ability to download more niche dictionaries, and most importantly, a listening feature in flash cards. I know there is an option you can choose to listen to words in the dictionary, but I found that to not work. No sound is produced when the “speak” option is pressed. Maybe it’s a bug, but I’m sure a lot of people would greatly appreciate it if this was fixed.
All in all generally a good app, but needs some fixing.Show less
