  • STOP TOUCHING THINGS

I love Tumblr, the hellsite I will live and die on but seriously man, stop breaking stuff when adding or changing things nobody asked for. The recent changes have broken reblogs which a lot of people need. The amount of blank/p*rn bots that pop up and post the most graphic stuff so we constantly having to block them and why, OH WHY have quick and easy log in screens like discord or Facebook. Stop trying to make it look like these everything else and give us random things, fix what we want AND GIVE US WHAT WE WANT.
    Otherwise, again, love this hellsite

  • iOS’ censorship damages an otherwise great app

I’m an adult, who uses my credit card to pay for an ad-free subscription. Having deselected every option to ‘hide potentially nsfw content’ there is no reason I should ever see a post censored with “iOS has decided to hide this potentially nsfw content” (like that isn’t the reason I’m on this app on the first place), and even less reason to GIVE ME NO OPTION TO VIEW IT. As a longtime user (10ish years at this point), I really hope that staff doesn’t decide to force a worse content algorithm on the user base trying to chase impossible profit margins. I use tumblr because it hasn’t turned into the site formerly known as twitter yet, and the more features they copy from other social media sites, the closer I get to quitting them just like reddit and facebook and twitter.

If Apple’s idiotic policies force you to arbitrarily censor content, at least give your adult users a way to view the post in browser, instead of just removing the content I pay for from my user experience. Otherwise, there’s no point in continuing to pay for a subscription that deliberately hides the content I’m looking for. (I’m not even going to start with how censoring tags made the search function go from ’mostly useless’ to ‘completely worthless’. :\

I love this site, and I’d like to see it succeed, but that will never happen while they’re focused on chasing a new trendy theoretical user base over listening to the core users who pay to support the site.

  • Tumblr content is good, features are bad

For a while, tumblr has been trying to get engagement from people on tiktok with a feature called tumblr live. It is incredibly unpopular since the button to make it not appear in your main 5 buttons on your dashboard has been something you have to snooze every week. Most users disliked this but dealt with it. Most recently, that snooze button no longer gets rid of this icon, but the pop up on the top of the dashboard is no longer there with this feature. I just don’t want to see it at all, on the older version I have, it takes the spot of the search feature, which means I HAVE to search on desktop. Incredibly inconvenient and the announcement of this feature has been loudly criticized.

Other features, like polls, are good and free for everyone, unlike twitter (and it isn’t run by a drugged out fascist apologist). I haven’t heard anything about api changes, so things like xkit rewritten still help in the features that tumblr doesn’t have the budget to implement. They could have been the one mario party meme where luigi wins by doing nothing, but they had to make poor layout choices and add features few are interested in. I won’t be supporting add free until changes are made for user comfort. They can make things better, but recently they’ve made it worse. It really needs a lot of work in order for the site to be the internet home most of us would like it to be again.

  • Ruined by updates

Staff seem insistent on ruining both the app and the website. Pushing tumblr live (despite it not only being wholly unused, but loudly hated by the majority of users), removing basic functionality, and refusing to monitor & remove bots, as well as horrific and illegal content, while instead policing harmless content, family friendly content based on the whims and biases of individual employees.

If they actually listened to their user base instead of wasting time and money implementing things that people not only didn’t ask for, but were in fact begging them not to do, tumblr could be great. It has the potential to be one of the last few unique and interesting social media sites, but instead it’s being rendered unusable in the stupidest ways imaginable.

It’s like having a boat that’s perfectly fine, if a little rusty, and all the passengers are suggesting that maybe if the crew patched the sails and polished things up a bit that they might actually get somewhere, but instead they’re bashing holes in the sides, steering into a storm, and then getting confused about why the boat is sinking.

  • recent changes are so disappointing

the app is honestly so infuriating to use and the mobile browser version isnt much better . like i love tumblr but its app and its website are just completely going down the toilet. its like theyre trying so hard to get rid of all the parts of tumblr that make it unique and special so it can be a little bit more like twitter because thats such a great platform ! it is impossible to fully block posts that have flashing lights in them because you have to manually enter every possible permutation of 'cw flashing' 'flashing gif tw' 'flashing lights' 'strobe lights warning' etc to have a hope of not seeing those posts right in front of your eyeballs. and THEN there are ads that just have flashing lights anyway like. thanks so much for showing how considerate you are about people with epilepsy and photosensitivity. the app is not good to use. if you can please use the desktop version because you can actually customise it with extensions to fix the horrible cramped twitter-esque layout and properly block posts

  • i’ve been on this site for 10 years and all i got was this crappy 1-star review

ever since the premier of the collectively-loathed ‘tumblr live’ feature, the tumblr app (which has historically been fairly unobtrusive as far as battery usage goes, i’ve been using it for several years across several phones and never had these issues) now causes my phone to overheat and drains battery to an insane degree whenever i use it, even if my phone is plugged in and on wifi. nothing else i’ve ever played or ran on my phone drains even a FRACTION of the battery that browsing tumblr does - i’d genuinely be better off playing pokémon go at full brightness for eight hours a day. there’s no way to actually ‘disable’ tumblr live, only the option to ‘snooze’ it for seven days, and even that doesn’t seem to actually stop the livestreams from being loaded in the background anyway as the performance issues stick around even when live is snoozed. the userbase has collectively been asking for the option to turn it off for good ever since it was added, but to no avail. it seems that pushing tacky, resource-hogging features that could maaaaybe bring them some more money is more important to tumblr staff than actually listening to the feedback they’re given by the userbase. i just want to be able to scroll for more than a few minutes without my phone getting so hot i can feel it through my rubber phone case 😬😬

  • :/

Why would you have the option to snooze tumblr live for only SEVEN DAYS are you joking. Let us turn it completely off
  • worst update yet

i dont think you understand how important to my app usage the location of the search function was. I NEED it to be a separate tab from my dashboard. I NEED to switch back and forth flawlessly. and i am NEVER EVER going to watch a livestream on this website. EVER. nor will i ever film one. thats not what this app is for

  • What the hell are these changes

I have been using tumblr on and off for about 7 years, and i’ve enjoyed a lot of it. tumblr is a unique social media platform that really helps foster community and friendships. but the changes that have been happening recently/are being planned are ruining this site.

the most important of these changes being collapsable reblog chains. by changing this feature tumblr will be getting rid of what makes it tumblr. they will fundamentally change the site and the way it has been and is being used, which completely negates the point of it existing. if i wanted this feature, i would go to twitter. conversation will be discouraged and communities will be shattered, and tumblr will cease to be the tumblr we all know and love.

its changes like these and the addition of tumblr live being forced upon the community that are really discouraging me from using tumblr. the devs arent listening to the userbase, and are only alienating us further with every new change they’re currently adding.

this isnt to say we dont want changes. there are many features that are sorely lacking and neglected. the video player is buggy and the volume on sound and video content is difficult to control and customise, to name one.

tumblr needs to start listening to its userbase, otherwise they’re going to find themselves without a userbase at all.

  • doesn’t listen to user base

to preface, i have been using Tumblr since 2012 and it has been my main social media for about as long! this is an app that actively removes and works against its appealing old-internet features it’s sooo proud of with every update, to major userbase backlash that is unheeded. 99% of the userbase (literally has been polled) does not use the tumblr live feature and most actively dislike it, but in the US if you don’t want it you have to disable it every 7 days not gettin removed. there is this obnoxious cramming-in of features to try and assimilate tumblr to modern platforms, acting like tumblr is somehow “difficult to use” when literally a minute of guidance when you download would be work…. and when it was literally perfect as it was without these changes. once this site starts listening to what its userbase actually wants, and what it actually needs to fix such as the search system and its janky broken ads, my review will change.

i would love to offer tumblr my money through simple donations, but as it stands i simply don’t think my money would go toward actually supporting what this site stands for, as a bastion of the old internet. this site and app are going downhill. i hope things get better.
