  • You shouldn't bother, staff doesn't care

Don't download the tumblr app. Staff just keeps making it worse and worse for the user base. They haven't done anything meaningful about the bot problem or the hate-speech problem in years and anything they have tried tends to just punish vulnerable people in the end rather than fix anything, like LGBTQ+ people, as an example, although it negatively affects a lot more people. If you can think of any person who is not cis, white, straight, neurotypical, and abled, then Staff's incompetence and lack of action will negatively impact your experience. They've also been making changes to it that only benefit companies and shareholders while making things worse and less accessible for all users. There are too many ads. No one actually uses tumblr live. Stop trying to be tiktok. It's annoying. Why can I only snooze it for a week before I have to turn it off and back on again? That should be a permanent setting. And why can't I double tap to zoom in on images anymore? Why will it show me random images I didn't ask for when I'm trying to view a specific one or a photoset on a post? Stop trying to push stuff I didn't curate for myself! It's the only reason why I like tumblr compared to other soc media these days! Stop trying to push algorithms! Let me curate my own stuff! Actually listen to us when we tell you something is messed up, Staff! Don't give tumblr your time, attention, or money. It will be wasted.

  • 13th year on this site

Appreciate the recent candour re: nsfw posts. Please consider not limiting the reach of community-labelled adult posts and being more explicit about what gets labelled. It would encourage users to label and tag their posts as such, making it easier for those who want to avoid adult posts to avoid them.

Managing sideblogs would be easier if we were able to move posts from the queue of one blog to another. Also would be nice to edit tags that have been entered rather than deleting them and re-entering them.

The tattered social media landscape needs Tumblr!

  • Frustrating changes, won’t accept feedback

    Updated review:
The search function is next to non existent, it barely functions and is infuriating. The app and website keeps making unnecessary changes that make things worse and more annoying to use. You used to be able to click on someone’s post and see the post on their blog now and if you clicked the person they rebooted it from, you would see it on them blog, now you are taken directly to their blog instead of the individual post page. The UI changes are also awful and making things worse for the sake of being like every other app, to make things ‘easier’ for newer users, even though those newer users are joining tumblr to get away from those design features from other apps. The app had decided to become yet another ‘TikTok’ lite with a ‘for you’ page, short video reels, live feature you can’t turn off(in some countries) and an annoying image viewer that forces you to scroll to the next image and is overly distracting with the way it displays things. Tumblr staff refuse to listen to criticism and dismiss it because these new changes are apparently better, but they are not. Very very disappointed.

  • BEST APP ON MY PHONE

I don’t write reviews for apps. Ever. But when I say this is the best app I am fortunate enough to have stumbled across, I mean it. So what has it got? Pretty much every fandom you can think of, very well written fanfics of many, many characters and pairings, vent spaces, people to meet, and complete and utter anonymity. Not to mention how hilarious the people on here are. There are a lot of different communities on here and a place for everyone to feel safe in, as well as feeling they are able to share anything due to no one knowing who you really are. I go by a completely different name and my real personality is unfiltered on there, and it’s great! Plus there are debates, polls, funny lil posts, art posts, literature posts, any kind of interest someone might have is on there and you can add your thoughts on it with one simple reblog. I cannot recommend this app enough to anyone, it doesn’t matter your age your gender your sexuality or your interests, there is a place for you here. So go download tumblr and meet people just like you :))

  • update: profile and market are back to normal

update: 5 stars for listening to feedback. thanks for restoring the profile tab in the bottom right. Now we can easily view our blogs again

my one minor complaint is that videos now must be fully opened on your entire screen to play, rather than just unmuting without opening them. but this seems like its probably a temporary glitch, so 5 stars

Bad update. Aside from the lil wizard icon- which is nice i like when icons have eyes- this was an overall bad update. for some reason it was decided that on the blogging app where you manage blogs... to make it harder access your blogs. Now you cannot view your blog at the same time as the dashboard, search, or notifs. you cannot easily switch between these tabs but must use the top right of the dashboard to access it. The dashboard is another main reason to go to tumblr, why is it now the only path to go to your blog. In the settings you cannot even adjust this to make your blog next to the marketplace in your tabs or to switch places with the marketplace again. the website is great and gives a lot of freedom, the app on the otherhand has only become more stifling and less about the main purpose of tumblr

    Developer Response

Hi! Thank you for this very thorough feedback. We really appreciate it! I'll share this with our development teams.
  • Very minor issues

Oh, I love Tumblr, but there are a few things that make my experience less enjoyable. The top thing contributing to my dissatisfaction would be the bots. I get two or three follows from robots every day. I like to post and re-post things designed for a target audience to also take inspiration from my vision boards but instead most of the only interaction I get is from robots. It’s come so far to the point I don’t think I should block them anymore. If I’m gone from the Internet for long enough, it will take me too long to go through the entire list of robots and block them all. Number two would be ads. I am not going to pay for a no ad experience and that is no reason for me to dislike ads more than I have to. Every time I’m scrolling through my feed I accidentally land my thumb on an ad because I am scrolling so quickly. But because of this Tumblr thinks I am clicking on the ad and it takes me either to the App Store or my browser. I don’t like that I have to have to back out of a different app so frequently in a five minute time frame purely because Tumblr thinks I’m clicking on ads. Other than that I love my Tumblr experience. As I mentioned, I love to make vision boards. All of the pictures and videos. I see on the app are so inspirational and aesthetically pleasing. The messaging aspect is very nice and works well, i’ve had a great experience with it too.

  • Updates are awful

I ignored updating my app for the longest time because I saw other people complaining about all these things and I knew that I wouldn’t like it either. Unfortunately I clicked ‘update all’ on the App Store for my apps and completely forgot about tumblr :/ first of all the new Home Screen app icon is so gross I’m embarrassed to have it on my phone. Second of all I absolutely hate hate hate hate hate how that new storefront took the spot of your account/blog- I have severe adhd and used to heart stories to read later and use the account tab, home page and search tab to have two different things set up to be able to help keep me entertained and be able to explore the pages and work I love more but now with the account tab being on the home page and having its original spot be taken by a money grab scheme (something that insta also inputted that made me leave it!) , obviously can’t do that anymore. And third (I’ve had this update already) tumblr live is sooo freaking annoying like for the love of everything I already have lives for every other app I don’t even watch, I don’t want another app like that. Seriously I’ve been on this app for 12-13(?) years now and this is honestly the first time I’m considering deleting the app and just leaving tumblr. I understand needing to keep up with it’s competitors but tumblr is doing the opposite and getting worse and worse

  • Something needs to be done about the cyberbullying

I used this website a few years back and was bullied horribly by lots of people on it. It was to the point I would have to block people on a regular daily basis. I had at least over 200 people say horrible things to me using swear words and writing to me in all capitals, sending me threats and calling me names as well. It got so out of hand that I ended up hurting myself physically and almost took my own life. I have terrible trauma because of this website but came back to it a year later simply because another fandom caught my attention. Sadly this fandom turned toxic too and I had more people bully me after I had only just recovered. Friends of mine had to experience similar problems as well. We need strict rules and policies. There are far too many bullies using this site and it’s dangerous and should be taken much more seriously.

  • Tumblr mart is stupid bring back blog

The tumblr mart being right where the blog spot use to be is insanely annoying. The latest update has been a step in completely the wrong direction. And not being able to access your blog without going back to the home page (which looses ur place if you click and scroll through a tag from your home page) is an insanely weird thing to do. I study design and even some of the less creative people in the class wouldn’t do this especially as it’s been like that for so long and is now catching out so many long term users like me. Please fix

  • Following in Instagrams steps..

I’m sad to say this but Tumblr is finally becoming just like all other social media media sites/apps. I have been using Tumblr for over a decade and the reason I have stayed with Tumblr is because there hasn’t been any massive changes with their interface and they way the app and site looks.

I’m sure most people will agree with me when I say apps changes their navigation is usually seen as negative by users because most of us are happy with how they are and we don’t want changes.

I see though now on the tumblr app there is a “marketplace” tab. I guess Tumblr was going to follow the path path as Instagram and Facebook, eventually. What a shame. If the developers are reading this, most of us DONT want this garbage on the app. It’s an annoyance and waste of space on our screen. We don’t want a market place. We come on here to write, vent, share other fandoms, not buy. This is supppsed to be a blog, not a shop. Please do not destroy your reputation any further, the same way many other apps have.
