Description of iChromatic

The HotPaw iChromatic Strobe Tuner uses the built-in microphone on your iPhone to allow you to tune a musical instrument rapidly and precisely via an animated visual display. For your iPad, please see the iChromatic Strobe Tuner HD. For guitar tuning, please see the HotPaw inTuna Strobe Guitar Tuner. Both of these apps are also here in the iOS app store. iChromatic includes both a frequency readout and 3 highly accurate and responsive waterfall strobe panes which allow extremely precise tuning. When the waveform patterns line up vertically as well as stop moving sideways in the strobe panes, this indicates that the input pitch (or a strong harmonic of the pitch) matches the frequency of the nearest equal temperament note. With the waterfall strobe tuning window, even very slight differences in frequency between the pitch detected and the target perfect pitch will cause the abstract waveform to waver or move sideways as it cascades down the strobe window. iChromatic also includes a pitch frequency readout in Hz and cents. Configuration options include a Concert A reference frequency adjustment in both Hz and Cents. Please try the Free inTuna A440 app, also in the iOS App store, before purchasing iChromatic, to see if you appreciate the advantages of using a strobe tuner. Tuning range using the built-in iPhone microphone is from 2 octaves above middle-C to 2 octaves below.

Reviews of iChromatic

Good but

This app is cool but would he better if it talked to determine the pitch.

Great tuning device

I like this app very much! There are few things that could change which would make this the best tuning device :  1. Power-saver by-pass...it is annoying at the moment when you tuning instruments with 50 + strings and the screen blanks out...most other tuners will keep by-pass the power-saver function.  2. It would be great to be able to store different intonation tables on your device and be able to toggle between them. At the moment you have to down load a file from a web-page and load it every time you want a different intonation table. Sometimes I am tuning to mean-tone, just intonation or my own variations 3. It would be good to a bigger range of calibration so as to include A = 415 for baroque music Apart from these points it is incredibly accurate, it does not get "stuck" on pitches as you tune a different string, very easy to read and for this I'm very thankful. It is I think the best tuning device but with updates I would be very happy indeed......Great work HotPaw

Sorry for bad spelling, I have fat fingers

I thought it was interesting that this app still had no reviews so I downloaded it and tried it myself.
This is a highly acurate tuner. It is a strobe type tuner that gives a visual tool to see what it is that the string is doing. This is superior to conventional tuners because strings don't vibrate at a single note they carry harmonics that can and do confuse electronic tuners. This is not for everyone though. It is complicated and offers too much information. This tuner is better suited for setting precise intonation by an experienced technician than every day tuning.
At $20 I would have liked to have seen alternate temperments and the ability to tune around middle C in those temperments to better tune to a piano. but I guess it is geared toward guitar tuning and guitars are designed to be evenly tempered, other temperments would never work perfectly. still the ability to add harmonic stretch would be nice.
