If you really want to learn hiragana and katakana this app definitely provides the best method to learn. The only down side is that the app does not recognize the accuracy of what you write in practice mode and leaves you to determine how well you did. Test mode is great exactly what I was looking for in an app like this. The app could definitely be more refined but for what it offers at the price you can't go wrong.

Perfect
I was hesitant to jump right into the kanji learning app for that price, but this app is perfect, and so is the price. It is perfect for studying kana. I chose ten kana first, practiced then tested on those, then add five more each time. The interface is smooth and it really is quite lovely. You can turn on a feature in practice mode that automatically moves it forward a kana when you do it correctly a number of times... Up to twenty! It really is brilliant.
I know some Japanese but decided to learn all the kana and some kanji before learning anymore. This is perfection.

Awesome App
This app is great, it lets you choose which characters you want to study, and then you can practice writing. The test can be configured to test your reading or your writing of the characters. I studied Japanese and I can read most, but I have forgotten how to write them. This app would be great for anyone new or who has studied Japanese.

Brilliant and addictive
This is a truly excellent app. It's has several modes to help you learn, practise mode where you trace the on-screen kana either in a hand drawn script or printed script form. You can alsl set it so that not character is presented so you have to remember it unaided-a nice little self test. Then of course it has a proper test mode where it asks you for a character , you draw it out on the screen and then you compare it to the actual character. You then have to manually state whether you have it correct or not for it to track you progress. This is a little clunky, but acceptable. I have managed to thoroughly memorise both syllabaries in a couple of days and can read signs and notices easily now rather than slowly spelling them out. My only issue is that the template hand-drawn characters are a little wobbly and not at as often presented in text books. It's almost as though a non-Japanese speaker/writer has input them in themselves without the required manual dexterity. It's a small issue. Oh and I have a sore right index finger from being addicted to this app! It's really great and I can't wait to get started on the kanji version!

This is probably the best kana app available. It helped me learn all the hiragana in one week. Looking forward to buying kanji ls.
Without a doubt, one of my best app purchases
I purchased this at least 2 years ago and it is still one of my absolute favorites. It's easy to use, it's clear and uncluttered, it's easily costomizeable and it does exactly what it claims it will do -- teach you to write and read kana characters. I was so delighted with this app I ended up purchasing the other two (Kanji LS and Japanese LS) as well.
