  • Very useful

This is an excellent app. I love that It doesn't require an internet connection. So helpful when I need to look up something on the subway or when a connection is undependable. in the fee cases when a word is not found, the online dictionary hasn't failed me.

If they would improve the switch from dictionary to verbs it would be a perfect five stars. Currently, one has to switch between the two and retype the word again.

  • This dictionary isn't for everybody

I purchased this app about two months ago for English to French translation. It is an extremely helpful dictionary if you are a beginning to intermediate speaker of French and you'll rave about it. However, if you are a fluent speaker like myself, you'll find that its performance in finding difficult words in standard French and words in regional dialects (i.e. Québécois, Suisse romand, etc.) will be very disappointing. Out of the last ten words I checked in this dico, seven of them were not in it.

    Recap:
    Beginning to intermediate speaker: Absolutely
Advanced to fluent speaker: À éviter

  • Great App for those single language speakers

For someone as bad as foreign languages as myself I find the Ascendo French English dictionary to be invaluable. I work in a number of French speaking countries, including France and often find myself in situations where I need to interact with people who have no understanding of English. Out pops my iphone and I can look up some expressions or words and my day is saved; especially when they can't even understand my pronunciation so I get the App to speak.

The ability to use the app offline plus to be able to create your own phrases are extremely useful.

Also I own other Ascendo Apps (datavault) and have found their support over the years to be fantastic.

    Highly recommend it.

  • Works great

As a dictionary, this is great. Its weird that the English and French words are listed together in the same dictionary, but I kind of like it.

The quiz mode is more/less useless. It gives words like "liquefaction," which is something I'm likely to never use. It also gives multiple choice answers, and a good number of words are cognates making it not really a test of knowledge.

  • Very Good, Could Be Better

The best of several English-French apps that I have tried. Lots of words, and the audio pronunciations are very helpful. App opens quickly and runs smoothly.
Still, for the price, I'd like more. A way to save words to a favorites list or folder would be nice. Lists of certain words, like numbers, would also be helpful. Written pronunciation guides would be great - as good as the audio is, sometimes you need the word written phonetically to really get it. The phrases are good, but not particularly extensive. Finally, some words only have audio for one tense or conjugate - expanded audio coverage would be appreciated.

  • Fantastique

This is an excellent French-English dictionary, and I use it frequently in my current language studies. It contains most words that I need to look up, along with their conjugations. The pronunciation feature is quite good. It has helped me with difficult to pronounce words. The main changes I would like to see is a synonym/antonym feature, as well as better integrated conjugation tables. Currently I use the Petit Larousse for these functions.

  • Très Bien

I'm on a study abroad program in Bordeaux. This is my most used app right now. The dictionary great and I can add my own notes to the definitions. You can also take a picture and add it to a translation. I snapped a picture of an eclair in a pastry shop and added it to the standard definition of lightning bolt.

I really appreciate this because it sort of turns the app into a travel companion in addition to a good reference tool.

  • Fast at finding French words

I’m dating a French guy which is a bit challenging. Having a French dictionary on my iPhone helps me to find the right word when I need it. This dictionary is first I’ve used where you don’t have to choose the language, just type in the word in French or English. Makes conversing easier.
  • Manifique!

I like this English French dictionary best of all the options in the app store because it has lots of features. First of all the dictionary has lots of translations and noun genders. You can send the translations by email which comes in handy with some friends. Sometimes I have them record pronunciation which I can save. I like the phrases and conjugations too. I can look up a verb in French and flip languages and use the history button to go straight to the English conjugation. I can work on vocabulary in my spare time with the quiz feature. So I feel like they covered all the bases except maybe audio but I emailed support and they said it’s on the way.

  • Excellent word selection and translation notes feature is very useful.

I made some French friends this summer and we keep in touch via email & IM. They are coming to visit, great chance to practice!

I got the Ascendo dictionary which has been hard to stump. I found words like barbecue, brainstorm and specialized medical terms like lazybones ☺ Also avoided some “faux amis” like preservative, don’t try that!

My friends use the word “dingue” all the time. I found it in the Ascendo dictionary with several translations but I like being able to add examples myself or make a note that I saw it in the movie Les Visiteurs. Ascendo seems to be the only French English dictionary that has that feature.
