  • Overpriced

I guess I shouldn't use the price of the app to indicate the depth of the product. Well, they got me this time. Not what I expected. The words in this dictionary are mostly what British English speakers use. As an American, I didn't realize that we have such different vocabularies. This is especially apparent in the quiz feature, which must have been designed to make idiots feel smart. I didn't exactly buy this app for the quiz feature, but there it is, and I love the idea of it. The quiz interface is quite fun to use, but maybe it should filter out words that are spelled the same in both English and French. Also, any dictionary should include the phonetic pronunciation for the words, and the proper preposition which follows, for French. The conjugation feature is nice, but lacks depth, for an app of this price. There is a phrase feature, which also lacks depth. Keep looking for a better dictionary.

  • Great French English Dico just got better

I have been using the Ascendo French English dictionary on my iPad for a few months. The translations are excellent and the phrase book is good too. There is a nice word quiz. I emailed support about a few verb conjugation typos a few weeks ago and they have been fixed in this version so I’m giving this app a 5 for great features & support.

  • Great Dictionary

We're heading to Paris in a couple of weeks and this app will come in real handy. I've tried looking up quite a few obscure words and all of them have been in the dictionary. It is very responsive since it doesn't have to go to the web to do the translation.
  • Sooooooo happy

I am so happy to leave my French paper dictionary at home! I’m on a study abroad program in Toulouse and I need the dictionary mostly when I’m at school, at a café etc. so having it on my iPod Touch is perfect.

The word base is very big and I can add notes to translations which is great for street talk that you wouldn’t find in a prim & proper dictionary, ou la la :)

  • Lots of idiomatic expressions and noun genders make it great

I like that the Ascendo French dictionary has lots of idiomatic expressions. For example, the verb “avoir” is used in literally dozens of ways like “avoir besoin”, “avoir droit”, “avoir faim”, “avoir honte” just to name a few. I find that mastering these types expressions makes a big difference in getting understood by the locals.

Another good thing is that gender is given for French nouns, ie “fourchette” is feminine “vin” is masculine. Gender isn't in many of the dictionaries for iPhone and you really can't get by without it.

  • Makes the most of iPhone

I like this dictionary because I can add notes and audio to the definitions. I am going to Corsica this summer and I want to keep track of expressions that use specific words in the dictionary. I hear Corsicans have a pretty thick accent so I'm planning on recording the locals saying words. This is a cool new way to think of a dictionary that makes the most out of iPhone.

  • Fantastic

I've spoken French since kindergarden, but got out of practice during college. Having the entire language at my finger tips is getting me back into the swin of things much faster than any phrasebook.

The expressions section is also invaluable for those who are new to the language.

    Great app. Great value.
