  • Finally, Flipboard is essential!

    Update:

Having rated the op highly after the inclusion of reader view, I am now noticing more and more that I'm Bing fed new "curated by" someone or other, which invariably turns out to be a collection of click bait, generally breaking out into ad-infested waters and thereby degrading the experience again. Taking away a star.

I have used Flipboard on a daily basis for several years, but found the persistent onslaught from pop-ups and other massively intrusive advertising to be very wearing. This led to me frequently having to use the share button to drop out to Safari, which (albeit only fairly recently) blocks at least some of the noise.

Now, finally, Flipboard has introduced a “reader view”, which is an enormous upgrade in usability, clarity and enjoyment on thousands of pages. At last I can benefit from the vast array of news and informative content, curated to my tastes, without rage quitting after 15 minutes.

Five stars is the minimum this upgrade deserves. I love it!

  • A welcome relief from Apple News-

Flipboard was always my go-to app for news when I had a Droid, and I don’t know why I never considered it on my iOS devices until now.

Since Apple News became solely an advert for Apple News+ I have been desperate to find a replacement. I’ve tried all the others (MS, Google, etc.) but they all have annoyances I just can’t live with. I just wish I had considered Flipboard earlier. There’s a good selection of news sources and topics, and the news I get seems relevant to me and where I live.

I don’t mind the adverts, developers need to make money and Flipboard gets the balance between news and ads just about right without being too intrusive. Of course I would prefer no adverts but this is the real world; better to have ads rather then have subscriptions rammed down my throat.

I don’t like Cover Stories as it’s far too US-centric, and I wish there was an option to either make it more location friendly or remove it altogether. That’s my one minor gripe, but not enough to dock a star.

    Keep up the good work.

  • Really disappointed. Many limitations for customization

I was looking for an app to provide me customized news based on my preferences. It was exhausting seeing negative news all the time either about coronavirus or politics that I wanted an app that can deliver me news just on a particular topic like art or design. Not that I don’t keep myself informed on other sources but I wanted to customize this news app to inspire creativity. I was excited when I saw that Flipboard does have the capabilities to customize but this is also its downfall. Even while just browsing the art or design tags, I still received news on my boards about politics or other topics I wasn’t interested in. I knew this would be a possibility because some news items may also be tagged that way based on the article’s content. However, I tried to customize it further by using the “less like this” option. Regardless of how many times I have selected “less like this” of a certain topic, it still comes up day after day...despite those same exact keywords showing up as an option to see “less like this.” I really tried and gave this app a good few weeks but unfortunately, I’m off searching for a new app.

  • I wish there was a mechanism to pay a fair amount of money for content

I enjoy Flipboard, I find it quite helpful for staying informed. I think they should have a freemium model, perhaps they do and I just don’t know about it, where I can avoid any ads and I could actually pay for my content at some reasonable fee. I do not believe content should be free, journalists have to be paid as do press sources. Flipboard could be a good mechanism for amalgamating and having content paid for on the web, and an advertisement-free option should be available for this. As a disclaimer, I am not a journalist. It would not need to be an excessive fee, perhaps $100 per year, in that range but that could still be some source of revenue for content providers on the web.

  • zite was so much better

i’m just gonna leave this here. some of us remember, flipboard.

“ Despite a pledge from its acquiring parent company, Flipboard, to integrate the best features of Zite into its flagship Flipboard app, Flipboard never delivered an option for mirroring Zite’s simple, scrolling, one-great-story-after-another interface.”

i was bum beard when you bought zite, shut it down, and acted as tho it never was. you can go to reddit and see a thread from just moths ago of people missing it.

it was wonderful. fast, simple, and the recommends were not just good, but gave you *useful* keywords to keep or not.

i was a tester years ago for flipboard. it’s a well done, slick app with good devs. but the interface is, for my taste, ponderous and unresponsive to my changing (or even long term) interests. it’s nothing at all like zite and if they incorporated any features, it’s imperceptible.

let’s end with another snippet from a different blog. “ Zite was special because it drew from multiple sources. It had a few of their own sources, which were mostly click-bait or teen-dream content, but the real power came from my RSS sources, Twitter account and an amazingly specific preference engine to tune content.”

amen to that. i don’t use flipboard (i did try a few times but tho slick and pretty, it just doesn’t do it for me). just got it for a sec to share my thoughts. five years on, still missing zite.

  • It got clickbaity

I used to use flipboard all the time, but noticed a slow decline in the quality of news it would present me, so I deleted the app and looked elsewhere. Eventually I came back to flipboard - as it has one of the most fluid interfaces of news apps with least intrusive ads - and signed up with a new account. We started off strong but over a few weeks the feed deteriorated into second hand, sensationalised stories. I find, even though I’ve set interests and preferred sources, the home feed buries longer, more informative articles to make way for clickable, hyperbolised stories. It’s now similar to scrolling Facebook for news, which is a shame because I used to appreciate Flipboard for its formal and neutral presentation. My guess is; flipboard shifted their algorithm to ensure users scroll for longer to increase profit from ads (like every other free news feed), but I guess that’s the cost of “free” news. Unfortunately, although flipboard served me well through secondary school and university, in the era of misinformation, I’m letting it go. RIP. It was nice while it lasted xx

  • Gone Wrong

For the first couple of weeks this was my favorite app. However, something has now gone wrong. When I open an article, the screen keeps reloading the page over and over. It is if it is reaching out to get advertising content and as each snippet of content arrives the screen goes black and then reloads. Sometimes it finally settles down, sometimes the app just shuts down and closes, and as of today a error dialog box pops up saying there was an error loading the page and asking if I want to continue in Safari instead. Most disappointed as the app is now unusable on my iPad. Going to see how things go on my iPhone before abandoning all hope.

  • The tablet experience is subpar

I’ve been using Flipboard for years now as my main news reading app on my phone, and I do genuinely enjoy using it, especially since I can easily swipe back and forth between my smart magazines to find articles on topics I choose.

I recently bought a tablet and downloaded the same app thinking the experience would be better, but in fact it is not, its far worse. Unless I’m missing something, the emphasis is on the tags you follow and not the smart magazines you’ve created, which are practically hidden. This is terrible, and I’m not at all happy with the experience. The app is still a good one, so I won’t rate it badly, it the difference between the tablet app and the phone app is too great, and with the phone app being far better I’ll be looking for another main news reading app for my tablet.

  • Can’t read most articles

Useless when most articles require a subscription to read.

    Developer Response

Some sources on our platform have a paywall wherein they require a subscription to view their full content. Otherwise, you're limited to a certain number of article views per source. If you would like to avoid these sources, you can mute them. Tap ⋮, select "Less like this", then select the mute option. Select "Contact" at flip.it/help for help.
