  • Awesome

This is a wondrous, amazing app which every art lover should have. It exceeds all expectations. So beautiful and with so many features. User friendly. It is my favorite app. Would like to see a couple of the more famous Japanese and other Asian artists added to its extensive selection of paintings.Lovely!!!

  • Not worth the money

This app basically takes you to Wikipedia. There is nothing that cannot be found on the Internet by searching an artist.
  • Home art gallery

I love this app. Every day I pick a new artist to focus on. The format is great. A mini art gallery where you pick the period you wish to focus on or just skip to a particular favorite artist. It is very easy to use.
Each artist is well represented with a number of their works and most of the works have descriptions as well.
Each artist also is linked to a Wikipedia write up. If only most museums would have such detailed curation. I also liked that women artists are well represented which is something many art history books fail to do.
I have recommended this app to friends and am surprised I am the first to review it.

  • Ok but could be better

Quite a lot of my favourite artists aren't represented. Load times are slow and images aren't brilliant quality. On the other hand there are a lot of good things about the app and it does have quite a lot of artists.

I find some parts of the interface hard to master or understand and it would be good if there were searches for types or schools of art.

  • Amazing. Brings the iPad alive like no other app.

This is absolutely my favorite iPad app. I can spend hours wandering through and never get tired of it. Simply stunning. I paid $5 for it, and thought it was a bit much, but it really is worth every penny.

    Pros:
great selection, wonderful layout, easy to use, hi-def photos, can order prints, save to photos option

    Cons:
useless without wifi. In settings you can set the photo cache to 50K (default is 5K) but the second you're off wifi the photos you just viewed are no longer viewable. (sometimes) You get a message telling you there is no wifi but you can view cached photos. Lies.

    Things I wish for:
1.A folder where you can view your offline cache of photos.
    2. Ability to sort paintings chronologically.
    3. Fill in the gaps on certain key artists that are lacking
    4. Ability to lock artists so the paintings are never removed from cache and never have to reload

  • 4.7 upgrade

    Hi,
Too bad we cannot save anymore to our photos. We should still be able to do it, at least for art of public domain. Very disappointing commercial choice from a great app. I liked to show masterpieces to my friend from my photos, offline... Now, over. Please, fix.
  • Good interface, disappointing approach

For the money this app charges, I really expected much more scholarly effort put into the information. I almost took a double take when I saw that all the info was just a link to Wikipedia. It makes me wonder about how they get their images. Are those just open source as well? Many of the images are horribly low-res. For something that calls itself "Art Authority" and charges as much as this app does, I really expected much more groundwork. As it is, the app just feels like a pretty polished Wikipedia portal.

That being said, it does present the works to you well and provides those Wikipedia links conveniently. The app is sometime inconveniently slow, but the overall presentation is well done. Don't expect the museum experience, but if you are looking to expose yourself to many important artists and works of art, this app is very good for that. However, I recommend buying it on sale.

  • Decent, but could be better

There are surprisingly few art-viewing apps for the iPad. This is the best I've found, but I keep wishing it were better. The navigation is pretty clumsy and slow. For example, to search through an artist's works for a particular title, you have to wait for all of them to load, which can take a long time. The alternative is to navigate all the way back to the home screen, then search by title (which is faster for some reason, but then you'll be searching through all artists). I also wish the scans were higher-resolution. On the positive side, the number of images is pretty huge, and there are "detail" views of some works, which partially makes up for the low resolution. Overall, I'm finding this a useful reference, but hope they continue to improve it.

  • Phileos

If you love art stop here! Of all the apps I have bought this is by far the best money I have spent. Each illustration can be zoomed in on for a more detailed examination. I rated this 5 stars only because there were no more I could give.
  • A Wonderful app

Art Authority is a superlative app. Anyone interested in art should own this, it really works so much better than browsing the web for art.
