  • The best drawing app. Love it!

I keep buying and trying other drawing apps but none get close to the quality of this one. I can actually create art on this app. Art that I can use. Art that I feel I can share with others.
Other apps LOOK like they were created on an iPad and seem only good for sketching ideas. What can be produced using this app is smooth and beautiful and looks like it was created on paper media. You can almost smell the graphite. I can create a final product with this alone.
If I had to have only one app for my iPad, I would choose this one.

  • Simple problems have simple solutions!

I like that I think it's awesome however it's so difficult to undo action. If I undo too far I completely erase my sketch. This has got to be fixed. I've lost hours of work because of it! Why Is there no autosave/backup feature to account for a crash or accidental erase? This is maddening! I appreciate how simple this program is but it would be great if I could keep what I've created and potential have a way of importing a background image. I don't need layers but PLEASE fix the saving options. Other than that this app is awesome... Wish I could show off my work but it KEEPS GETTING ERASED and there is no way to recover.

  • Must have for serious artists

I attend of a lot of life drawing sessions and study the figure by doing quick gestures. I use up pads and pads of paper and have been looking for something on my iPad that will let me do the same. This is the only app I found so far that is simple to use and comes close to what I do on paper. It's just like having a pad of paper and charcoals of different hardness. It renders the figure beautifully. Highly recommended for any artists who draws with charcoal. This app would be even better if I can have a blending tool or select different colors like sanguine, sepia or white on toned paper for a more classical feel. Thanks so much for a great app!

  • Average app

I downloaded this app hoping for a fun sketching app... I immediately discovered that it has some limitation that other digital drawing apps don't... And while that makes for a mores"realistic" charcoal to paper experience it is a bit of a let down to a newbi digital artist...

I find the menu UI clunky and awkward ... Without a users guide i'm stumbling blind ... Maybe the developer can rework that for a future release ...

I get inconsistent results when drawing with the same "brush" ...

Once I resigned myself to the limitations and "just drew" I found the strokes to be smooth and the end results pleasant ....

Charcoal was never my medium to begin with ... But I'm not sure this was worth $2... Maybe after an update and some more time spent with the app I'll feel different ...

  • Close to perfect

I have many (way too many) art apps. I absolutely love this app for doing exactly what it says: sketching. I like that it is kept simple and only meant to do the one thing. Two things keep this from being 5 star for me: I find the control circle a little awkward to manipulate. I am hoping it will become more intuitive the more I use it; and I wish I could import a picture for reference when I am sketching. Not necessarily as a layer, but just something I can pin to the page to look back and forth at as I sketch.

If you are looking for a solid, straight forward app to simply sketch then I would highly recommend this. As close to paper and pencil as I've found yet.

  • A few glitches but not bad

I like this for sketching, though it can be a little challenging to adapt to the auto shading. I noticed while working on a sketch some square and circular glitches began to pop up as solid white spots. This should be looked into. I think a little icon for quick gesture references would be helpful, some are a tricky to discover. There's most likely a website for help, but in app help is still what most would prefer. However I like the simplicity a lot.

  • Wonderful!

This app is perfect for both quick doodles and works of art. The automatic shading makes it look unique and beautiful either way. The only thing I would ask for is instructions inside the app. I tend to forget things quite a bit. Other than that, this app can be enjoyed by both amateurs and pros.

Good app. My problems are, the iPod Touch's touch screen is meant to recognize fingertips, so you can't use a stylus. My finger can't make precise lines. The zoom feature, well, you can't make a picture with many small things, such as a landscape, because when you zoom in, you don't have a grid, so it's hard to know where you are at on the pad. You must use the scroll bars on the sides to judge your location. If you sketch a line, then zoom in, the quality of that said line decreases and it becomes all "pixel-ly". If you sketch one line across, then w/o lifting your finger, and swipe back, it makes a shadow in the space between the lines. I like that. There IS a save feature. The sketching effect that this app makes is that of smoke. The screenshots displayed above were most likely done by a professional, or at least on an iPad. The easiest thing to make is a tree (pine that is). Maybe it's just me, with my iPod Touch, and my normal size fingers. It wasn't a complete waste of money, but yet it wasn't the best purchase. It is actually pretty hard to rate this app.

  • Almost perfect

This app does a great job simulating charcoal. I have purchased almost every art application app there is. This one definitely gives the feeling I was looking for. It is also amazingly easy to control.

I just wish the eraser was a bit more like a real eraser. Real erasers smudge the charcoal around a bit before picking it up. Also, in real life it's almost impossible to get back to the bright white of the paper once charcoal has touched it. This allows for beautiful effects and transitions that I can't quite get in this app.

I would also love to see different weights and textures of paper in a future update. Maybe even toned paper. It would also be fantastic if you added white charcoal. Wonderful effects can be achieved with white and black charcoal and an eraser.

All in all, this is one of my favorite drawing apps. I love the elegant simplicity.

  • The BEST "sketch" App without question!!!

This is hands down the best sketch app on the iPad. It is simply like having your pencil and sketchbook with you at all times. I have purchased 4 other drawing/painting apps and I come back to this every single time. It is simple, it is functional, and it makes drawing fun.

I noticed today that the App Store had a Drawing / Painting section this week and it did not feature this app, what a mistake by Apple!! I have done over 100 sketches using this app and even used it to create my story board for a 3D animation project I was creating using Maya (for Mac). I turned in my sketches and the project was quickly approved and I got great compliments on the quality of the sketching within my story board.

If your looking for a great drawing app without a bunch of fluff... this is for you!!!
