  • Needs options to make it work

In general, the idea behind the app is really good and it's mostly well executed. Sure, color would be nice, but it's not required. What doesn't work well is the pencil adjustment via pinch and zoom as well as the double-tap to bring up the menu; both problems have been pointed out by other reviewers. If you are using a stylus, having to use the fingers to change the pencil options is cumbersome. What's really getting in the way, though, is the fact that the menu pops up when you try to draw short strokes fast enough that the program things you double-tapped the screen. This is the real show stopper. There needs to be an option to disable this or at least designate a corner for double taps. Designating corners to adjust focus and line thickness would also be a welcome addition for those not using the fingers to draw. It also appears that the app hasn't been updated in a while. Is the developer still around?

Update: Latest version addresses the main problems I had with the program so far and adds some useful features. I can recommend this app now to anybody who likes to draw with a pencil. It feels very natural and is almost as smooth as Penultimate.

  • Wow. Buy this right now.

This is my favorite app right now. My first two drawings turned out amazing. Can't recommend it enough. It makes the other drawing apps look silly by comparison. The only thing I'd like is the ability to change background colors or the color of the pencil. But I'm not complaining. Love this app so much!!!

  • mmmmmm buttery & beautiful

What a great and simple app! You may think you can't draw… but ASKetch will change your mind and give you the creative boost to jet-power your new-found abilities. Found it on a Friday and could not put it down over the entire weekend. Suddenly I had over 50 drawings, majority are legitimately artistic (everything else=learning curve) and astounding to me… mostly cartoon portraits that must have been stored in my brain… all different and surprising to see as they blossom from the brush/fingerstrokes.

Then I watched the demo video and realized I could customize the brush sizes and eraser opacity, so that introduced even more style and finesse to the process. Have also tried it on my iPhone, and obviously the drawings are a bit rougher due to finger/screen size ratio, but no less satisfying and surprising. I have used other Harmonious Mr. Doob-type drawing apps, but never with these fantastic results. Must give credit where credit is due: the app's brushes and buttery ease make my finger drawings cleverer than I could imagine. I just keep murmuring… "am I this talented?")

I have showed my drawings to friends who all say " I didn't know you could draw" to which I must reply, "I didn't know I could either". It's as if the power was always there, and ASKetch pulled it out of my fingertips onto the iPad.

So do not hesitate to plop down your 99 cents for the thrill of finding out what's waiting in your own fingertips…

  • One of the best drawing apps

The people who made this AMAZING app had a great approach: Make an app that does one thing, but does it better than anybody else. They completely succeeded! it just feels like drawing with charcoal. Just make sure you go to their site to read the short instructions, they are clear and will save you some time learning the app. On my second sketch I really felt in control and got great results. This app is certainly worth the buck they ask for, I would pay more for it now that I know how good it is.

  • Wonnnnnnnderful

I have brushes and sketchbook pro, but this is by far my favorite. The lines are lovely and i love how "sketchy" they look. You can zoom way, way in to draw little tiny details, as well. There is a soft, dark pencil, and a hard, light one. This is a greatnapp for this who are not really confident with drawing, as you can sketch very lightly and then darker over the light lines. My boyfriend, who is not much of an artist or very confident when it comes to drawing, drew two beautiful pictures last night. It's also fun to take turns drawing, one at a time, and see what you come up with.
    Worth every penny!

  • Simple yet sophisticated

At first, I didn't give this app much thought because it was simple.

However, a friend recommended it to me and showed me examples of her drawings using this app (she is a professional artist). I was blown away by the range that this simple app can do so I went ahead and bought it.

Great for drawing/sketching anything--from a simple doodle to complex landscapes/still life compositions. It gives the picture that "charcoal" look.

I love the updated version because of the ability to draw a thicker and darker line and for the pinch gesture to actually increase/decrease pencil size as well as the eraser size.

This app definitely deserves more attention!
