  • Excellent chart/mind map app

Hooray for free demos, simple elegance, and small dev teams!

As I was trying to organize the various bits and bobs of a story idea, I decided to look into flowchart/mind map apps. My first thought was, of course, Omnigraffle, but the $50 price was way too much investment for non-business use. Fortunately, Popplet had a free Lite version of their app which offered full functionality but only one saved file. Within seconds I knew this app would do nearly everything I needed. And it looks great doing it.

  • Captain Redbeard

I was looking for an application that does concept maps (nodes you can link any way you like) rather than mind-maps (everything branches in a tree from a central node). On my Mac laptop I use VUE which is great, but I was having trouble finding something suitable on the iPad - most apps are for mind mapping rather than concept mapping.

Then I found Popplet - which is a very nice concept mapping tool. Extremely simple and intuitive controls and nice looking maps. You can put text, pictures or free-hand sketches in each node, and easily link them in any way you like, move them around and highlight them.

There are not a lot of options - if you want to change fonts, or duplicate/save a copy of a concept map you are out of luck. But the standard font and layout are extremely good - simple, attractive and uncluttered, and the lack of options makes it a very easy program to use with an uncluttered interface. I have found that it does everything I want and nothing else.

  • Would like a spellcheck

I take notes with it and sometimes I fudge the typing on the iPad and I'm not aware. A spellcheck would be nice for this illiterate generation :)

Also, emailing big boards is useless because zooming out blocks out the text, what's the deal with that?

I like the crisp text, and the simplistic layout helps me keep up in class. It also makes it more fun to take notes than the other apps out there, which pays out in the end. Before writing my paper, I always plan it out on poppet.

  • Easy, fun, and useful!

Popplet is easy to use and has a really nice UI. For me, it's the app I use most often on my iPad (other than email). It works as advertised and allows me to organize my projects and ideas. However, there are still several shortcomings, mainly around what you can export out of Popplet -- meaning that for the most part, what I create in Popplet stays in Popplet. The development team is really responsive though, and I have high hopes for this app. Definitely worth the price -- there are $20 apps that aren't nearly as good as this.

  • Simple, intuitive

Great little app. The developers know that keeping things simple and focusing on slick interaction results in a good experience overall.

They're also very open to feedback and requests, and reply to emails (always a good sign). Lots of essential features are coming up soon apparently. On the basis of that promise, I'm giving them a top rating.

  • The Best mind mapping app, Bar None!

Finally a mind mapping app that is so intuitive I can focus on the job at hand, and not be distracted by working the app itself. Every step is brilliantly simple.

    Great job.

Only suggestion would be to add option of different shapes (ovals, triangles...) and perhaps have option of linking items with arrows in addition to the lines you presently use.

Having said that, it is still 5 stars because it is so superior to all other mind mapping apps currently available!!!!!!

  • Very intuitive, quick and easy to use

I don't recommend building anything serious with the lite version. I've made that mistake. There is upgrade for your content, currently anyway. I hope there will be soon.

I'd love to have properties for the links - right now you can only create or delete

I like the fact it's so much more than a mind map.

  • Great app, although crashes when inserting pictures

This is a great application for organizing ones thoughts. However, I find it crashes on me a lot when I'm adding pictures to the popplets. If this didn't happen it would get 5 starts.
  • Needs Export Capabilities!

I like this program even with its flaws. The photo and drawing capabilities add a lot to a mind map. I decided to upgrade from Popplet lite so I could create more than one file. Lo an behold, the only way to get a copy is to email a screen shot. That means that it can only be as big as the iPod screen. If your mind map extends over the edge the image is cut off. Also, make sure you can read all your text when you push the share button. If you zoom out too far the text changes to gray boxes and then the ideas in your mind map are useless. Even with the export problem, you can make nice mind maps that are fully visible from within the program.

  • Great start

This is a great start to an alternative approach to doing mind mapping.

Though it does not have the auto layout capabilities found in many mind mapping tools. The ability to have both text and graphics in the same node is welcome as is the ability to have "floating" nodes.

The usability is excellent, with great use of the touch interface on the iPad. Linking and unlinking popplets is easy and intuitive. Zoom and pan works great, and the export to picture feature is nice.

I hope that they continue to add more features to this product.
