  • Grand Master Crushes Hapless Beginner

Two stars may be a little harsh but, while it was a great app for the first couple of weeks I played, at a certain point it jumped from ‘humanly beatable’ to defcon 4
And despite my rating tumbling back almost to where I started, it hasn’t backed off. (Was it something I said?)
...other than making me feel like a 5 year old it’s a good app.

Hello, please adjust the level in "Settings". There was a glitch in an earlier version. Apologies.
  • Great chess app!

I've been playing the app for a few months and can see the improvement in my game after not playing for years! I like the hints and the ability to take back bad moves and mistakes. I recommend this to others!
  • Excellent learning tool for beginners and beyond.

At age 89, I have decided to learn to play chess for the first time I’m my life.
I have never had any interest in other board games including card games.
While I have mild cognitive decline due to age I was looking for a strong mild stimulant to offset and avoid Alzheimer’s which my younger brother has and does no longer recognize me.

This app allows me to play by myself with hints as to my best moves, which then allows me to better understand chess tactics and strategies.
I find myself over the last ten days playing constantly on my iPad.
Better than reading the Wall Street Journal or watching Netflix
Both of which I have cancelled substituting the great courses plus which has hundreds of subjects that interest me.

I reward myself after an hour of chess with this app by going to GreatCourses plus and enjoying a course or courses on musiccollegy
Great fun and a great app for someone like myself who enjoys studying a difficult subject.
I do have a friend who first interested me in chess and I look forward to the collegiality of a game that also meets my desire for togetherness.l

  • Finally, an app that’s actually helping me re-learn chess!

Even when I turn off suggestions for a bit, and play myself into the woods, I can turn suggestions back on and it plays me out of danger and to a win. This is the droid I’ve been looking for!
  • The board is actually bad

Contrary to the other reviewer, the way I see it the chess pieces are just too fancy. To be fair I played the game on an iPhone 7 screen. I played several games, and tried all the designs of the boards and pieces. I found them too "confusing". The best board for me should have been just white and green. This app doesn't have it. With regards to style of pieces, the art was actually excessive. They all add to confusion. I delete the app after several tries. Really not for me. I could not concentrate on the real art of chess play with the app's artwork getting in the way. Not all good art is good to everyone. Stick to the old simple artwork, perhaps.

Hello, there is a white and green board. We're sorry you couldn't find it. With 5000+ chess skins we're surprised you coouldn't find one that you liked. There is everything from plain to artistic.
  • Awesome Chess app

This is an incredible amazing Chess app that has a nice interface and a strong engine. A couple things though would be to make he train mode a bit stronger I'm not sure how strong it is but less than 2200. Plus a bit of a time ago I saw the $6 dollar version ultimate chess which looked like the best version no ads, and other stuff and it was on sale for one dollar. The pro version that costed one more dollar regularly went to 10 bucks and the one that I bought is off the AppStore I just want a clarification of the differences between the apps. Other than that you guys made a great app.

Hello, thank you for your review. The paid version is currently undergoing a major upgrade and we'll update the description soon when it goes live. If you need a higher ELO setting you can go much higher via the settings. The free version currently has banner advertising, fewer features and lower resolution artwork which isn't too obvious unless you use an iPad.
  • Excellent Program!

I downloaded the free app and soon paid for the pro model because of positive reviews I had read. However when I started using the Pro version none of the features I was expecting to see were visible. It was late at night and I wrote a negative letter to Apple for which I received a refund. But trying out the program the next day I discovered that the advanced features are only visible while holding the iPad in Portrait View. Now I have found that the features are quite good for practicing playing chess against the computer and using the skill levels, and coaching cues. For anyone using the app in landscape view, turn your iPad to Portrait View in order to access the advanced features.

  • Wonderful, but...

Truly enjoy playing with this app. I'm classified as a 'strong club' player and every game is fun. This is the ONLY program I've used where 3D graphics actually improve the experience. Everywhere else I play with 2D figures because the 3D graphics distract. But this is almost like playing 'real' (over the board) chess.

1 major flaw - no resign. What's up with that? This should be an easy feature to add and it would bump me from 4 stars to 5.

Also, on occasion it plays super stupid moves - well below the level of play through the rest of the game. Not sure if it is trying to be 'human', or if there is a glitch. Either way it makes some victories hollow.

Hello, you can turn on the Resign and Offer Draw features by turning off "Beginner Buttons" in Settings.
  • The last update in February

While I love your application and use it for years, I am very disappointed by the last update in February 2017. Much less 3D and less options on the board and pieces. Please revise the presentation side of your update.
  • Great 'Hints' Help Improve Your Game

I really liked the 'hints' option that helps you keep the 'suggestions' off for most of the moves but can use when needed to think like the computer would. I usually think of a couple of best options that I have in terms of moves but still ask for a 'hint' to see if there is a better move.
Other features like showing 'threats' are also available.
I haven't got there yet but after 10 games in the non training mode it gives you your ELO rating.
