  • Struggled With it Since 2018. Had Enough Now

Orginally bought a MyCloud NAS to store a vast number of MP3s on it and create a library on Plex to play through it onto my Sonos system (reason: music files are number limited in the Sonos library). For years this arrangement has been a creaking gate ready to “fall off” at any time and trust me it has done many times resulting in me tearing my hair out reinstalling things, updates here and there, putting all albums back into my Plex library(each time taking literally days to complete). Anyway with the recent updated app fiasco on Sonos then enough is enough I have got rid of Plex completely and installed a player that plays direct from my NAS. Why I oh why did I persist with perplexing Plex for years is anyone’s guess. I can’t comment on Plex video side of things as I have never used it. Trust me, you will get problems with Plex sooner or later and then again and again 😱

  • Way too many ads

It’s very hard to get through an entire movie as there are far too many ads. The ads are always the same and usually last for a couple of minutes for every 10 minutes of movie time.
  • Good app but some functions are not working

I have been using Plex for few months now and the concept of Plex has great potential but, I noticed when downloading my content to mobile devices, it doesn’t always work in home network and completely unable to download in a different network remotely.

“Plex Pass subscribers are limited to 2 Mbps maximum for streams” - Plex support. Is this a joke in this day and age? 480p at 2Mbps. Specially for paid customers who are not tech savvy or do not wish to meddle with advance network settings and just want to watch some content when away from home.

Getting a positive response to this review is highly unlikely but I see great potential for this service and I hope Plex will improve upon and provide a better service

  • Plex to rule them all!

I’ve been using Plex since way back in 2011 and I do so live using Plex above all other media handlers, like XBMC, Jellyfin, etc, it out performs them all IMHO!
But today I still cannot fathom what, if any, advantages there are to spending £4.99 a month on a Plex Pass! Thought I would try it again, to see if anything had changed…nothing has, apparently! After subscribing again, Plex was running just the same as it always does on all of my devices really! No change in speed, performance, additional options or anything! Apart from another category added to my library tabs, which I know I’m not going to use!
For me, the best part of Plex is how it auto-configures to whatever device you are using and to whatever network settings you have applied, or a using at the time! It will 99% of the time play or display most types of video, audio, picture and songs that you throw
    A truly epic multimedia handler!

  • A small change

How about being able to search using just two key words? Like Sewing Bee to find The Great British Sewing Bee?

  • Getting harder and harder to use

Plex used to be easy to use. To sync files and Unsync them to my devices. Now it’s impossible to find how to unsync anything. And trying to find my way through all the extra things it tries to force on us is incredibly annoying. All I want to do is play my files that I have. I don’t want paid content. I don’t want the free content. Just my stuff. Getting to my content has gotten harder and harder. It insists on showing “recommended” content all the time. I know what I want to see and it’s not recommendations. Just stop it. Notice that the reviews giving high stars are from at least two years ago. Take note...

Additional: Plex on iOS does NOT have feature parity with the windows desktop version. You can’t play photo playlists as a slide show.

Plex can’t even keep track of the basic requirement of knowing which episode in a series (that I’ve already played ) I’m up to. I play and it does go through the episodes in order. Then I go away and when I come back, it’s showing me the episode I started playback from, not the next episode that I’m up to.

I have Plex pass and frankly I’m wondering why now. I got it in the past to support Plex as a media playback server and client. But with the addition of third party content that I have ZERO interest in, it’s cluttering up what I was supporting. The ability to play and stream my own files.

  • Good for focussed play. Terrible for multi-tasking/background

The app works well if all you want to do is stream something from your server and watch it or to download a video from your server for later. However, PiP doesn’t continuously play from playlists or selected media, making it useless for watching long running shows in the background. Continuous play of playlists etc also fails when the iPad screen is locked making falling asleep to your favourite shows as background noise an impossibility. The other major drawback is the stressing of charging model features in development as opposed to improving the UX and fixing bugs that have been around for years. Overall, the development of this app is notorious for ignoring its user base.

TL;DR: If its the basics that you want and you have the media server, this app is perfect. Otherwise I would look into a different ecosystem.

  • Advertising in my personal library

I have Plex lifetime pass. Today I started watching movie from my personal library. Plex showed to me ad in my own library, in my oven server in my movie. This is weird! I’m going to look another product to use. Plex will not on my phones and computers and tvs.

Ads are only shown when streaming content from the free services we provide ("Movies & TV", Web Shows, News, etc.). We don't show ads when streaming media from a personal Plex Media Server. If you still have issues, please post specific details in our support forums at https://forums.plex.tv/ if you haven't done so already. Our staff or friendly community should be able to help you out.
  • Best personal media server and app!!!

Update March 2024 - Still the best media streaming server platform there is!! My family uses this daily as we cut the cord over 10 years ago and in the last 5 years limited ourselves to 1 paid online service which we cut over a year ago, so officially we pay for no online media services now thanks to Plex and the rest of my Self-Hosted Linux Containers. I have closed to 200,000 FLAC music files I listen to all day in my home office with Plex and PlexAmp. Kids have movies and shows I have personally curated, and know that is safe and what we want them watching. I also have the same broke out and excluded for my teenager. And then my wife and I have our own library of movies and TV shows that we watch and enjoy. thanks to Plex. We watch things in ultra 4K the fantastic sound and picture in the privacy of our own home and enjoy the entertainment we want to watch without commercials we don’t want our family being subjected to.

  • Dear lord, how far we’ve fallen

the ‘your media your way’ is a distant memory. The core functionality of playing your media has taken a distant back seat to streaming ad supported and subscription services and pimping your info to ad services and trying to sell some pretty bad product ideas to ‘our’shares. Fixes and bugs go largely unaddressed, users are deliberately mislead (like the fact the fact plex caches the metadata/we don’t get it directly, the RT or IMDB ratings bug thats been asked 100’s times and totally ignored etc). Getting Cloudflare setup for Emby as we speak. Update 5/30 - wow have things changed with time.

My beloved Plex, my favorite software since 2010 has totally lost its way and unrecognizable. 5 years ago I would’ve,said Plex was the technology that made the biggest impact in my house and the fact friends and family could watch it was unbelievable. Now the server owners are simply a delivery system of people (our shares) to monetize their wares too. It’s been years since the server owners were their target audience. Not sarcastic- I’d pay a sub to remove the inundated non stop crud and let us actually admin the server-client. There has to be a price where this makes sense, find out and offer it.

Ps- the reviews are funny bc 90% have no idea what it was originally made for.

Thank you for helping us discover the issue regarding the way actors are listed for our titles. We were able to reproduce it in-house and are now tracking it internally.
