  • Totally worth it

Great app, I would tell that anybody willing to learn mandarin to get this app

    AMAZING
  • Cool app

Great...I am happy how fast I am building my vocabulary.
  • Supportive: use with other apps

Good for character learning but there are better vocabulary practice apps out there, particularly BUSUU.
  • Great for Chinese language

I got this app when I got to China, and have found it very useful to learn key words and phrases.
  • Mom? Is that you...?

Do your homework ! Are you doing your homework ?!
Mom would frequently call this up the stairs to me in the evenings after school.

I've missed that and the ready source of study materials at my fingertips school provided and as such... I found my knowledge slipping.

Then along came this app that will allow you to test your knowledge in dozens of areas and if you turn on notifications it will yes, call you the stairs to remind you every evening to do your home work.

Mom, are you in my iPhone.

  • Good for vocabulary study.

A good tool to study vocabulary. Obviously not a tool to learn grammar or word order.
  • Great app but would it be to much if I ask for a way to play flashcards automatically

怎么样? 我是汉语学生。Thanks to this app I have been able to learn many characters, I would like it more if it had a way to play flashcards automatically with chinese pronunciation and meaning in english so you could listen to it while you are on the go.
  • Easy to use

It's great to whip it out in a moment of boredom and learn a few. Like standing in line at the DMV. It works too. Example sentences would be nice, because it's not always clear which meaning of a word is meant. For example, the word 'each'. When that happens, I switch to the excellent Pleco dictionary to get full meanings with examples. I only have to do that once when I see a new word, though. The flash card frequency is great for reminding, to make it stick. The hardest part is making learnt words stick and not slip away. Brainscape does it well.

Another reviewer said the word for "want" and "think" were conflated. The trouble is that a single Chinese word can mean either. Many Chinese words have no precise meaning on their own and only get their precise meaning in combination with another word. Actually, the same is true in English, but to a lesser extent. Take the words "up" and "down". Now combine them with the words "go", "shut" and "throw" and see what you get. The whole Chinese language is like that. Mostly.

  • Not great

Well, it teaches you things in a very weird way. Mandarin is hard anyway but this throws you straight into the deep end with loads of words you've never heard of and expects you to memorise them? It's not great to be honest but it will help if you're already good at mandarin
  • Inaccurate translations

I have been taking Mandarin Chinese for 4 years now, and I got this app because I wanted away to review and freshen up on old material on the go. I was severely disappointed by the inaccuracy of the definitions, as many of them were far from what I'd been taught by my teacher, a native Chinese speaker (for example, the Chinese word for "want" was translated to "think" and their definition for "excuse me" was way off). The study techniques may work for some people, but the translations are far from accurate. I would not recommend this app.
