iknow is great, this app not

It keeps crashing halfway through study sessions and everything is lost

Sorry for the late reply! Our apologies for the inconvenience. Could you please contact our support from "Contact Support" on the mobile app menu with as much detail as possible like courses and the study app(iKnow!, Rapid Choice, Self Check, Sentence Trainer or Listening) when you get the issue.

Good tool!

Really enjoying going through the Chinese course with iKnow. Particularly love the sentence feature to give context when seeing words. It does however have some shortcomings that make me hesitate to give five stars.

First off, it’s fairly common (and understandable) that the sample sentences will contain words we haven’t been exposed to yet. That’s fine but it would be helpful if there was a more explicit acknowledgment of that fact. Not really sure what it could be, but my ideal would be to clearly mark words “I’m not expected to know” (lest I wonder if I’m just forgetting), make them easy to look up (I currently am a compulsive Pleco switcher when using iKnow), and possibly even a quick shortcut to add the unknown word to a separate study list. Or to advance it from one of the later courses.

Another annoyance I’ve had is with the dedicated sentence training feature, which feels a bit underpowered next to iKnow’s excellent core testing machinery. The issue I have with it is that there’s no apparent way to track my status on the sentences: the words have percentages, nice scheduling, achievements, etc. but the sentences are completely opaque other than a mysterious “level” that only appears in the per-course detail page on the website. I was hoping the sentence trainer could help me absorb the unknown words I describe in the last paragraph but as it stands it hasn’t been much use to me.

I’m leaving these comments here not because I don’t like the app (which I pay a subscription for and spend 1hr+ a day on!) but because it feels like it has a ton of potential to be a truly excellent tool that’s genuinely different from so many other contenders in this space. For example, the sentences-as-context aides for learning words could be just the beginning: if I’m learning a new word like 解决, it’s genuinely helpful to remind me that I’ve already seen the first character in an earlier lesson in 了解. These words are foreign to anyone using the program and introducing new words with as much familiar context as possible is deeply helpful to help newbies make the connections needed to remember words.

Anyway, all in all, really good and I’m excited to see where the developers take the idea.

Worth it.

I think this app is worth the subscription price. I’ve learned more Japanese with this program then with any other. I’ve used many programs before, but this is the best in my opinion.
The only thing I don’t like is that they removed the ‘none of the above” button in the multiple choice quiz. Removing that made the multiple choice quizzes too easy and almost not worth even doing. I really wish they would add back the “none of the above” choice in the multiple choice quizzes.
If they did that I would rate this app 5 stars. They could just make it an option to have “none of the above” or not in the settings. I’m sure it wouldn’t be too hard to add, the app use to be that way...
Also the audio is a bit crackly for some reason, a bit annoying but not that big of a deal.

We thought about this long and hard as a team but we made the decision to remove the "None of the above" choice in the multiple choice quizzes. Thank you for your valuable feedback.

Great app

I’m using the app to learn Japanese vocabulary. All words and sentences have audio from native speakers which is great for learning pronunciation.

Great, but issues with recent update

Great app - sound and sentence trainer issues have appeared since last update.

When trying to load Sentence trainer on all items, the app crashes out to the home screen.

Also, the audio isn’t balanced properly, leading to loud distortions on the iPhone X and iPad Pro speakers, even at low volumes.

It’s good but I miss the previous version

Miss the previous version. Voices have changed and sound more digital somehow. Some translations aren’t accurate.

Too good to pass up on.

I was having problems trying to log onto iKnow with my Google account with my iPad, so I went ahead and cancelled my initial monthly subscription I signed up for a couple of days ago (money down the drain), and created a new account.

I’m disappointed about the log in problems, even with the troubleshooting, and especially losing money. If I could only transfer my progress from the old account I signed up for a couple of days ago to this new one.

Good app!

Mixed learning / quiz styles. Sentences are great for understanding grammar. Uses typing to prove recall.

It starts with multiple choice, and lacks mnemonics, but it's real value is in the sentences if you're already learning kanji elsewhere.

Great UI.

Great study tool

The app is a great study tool. Worth every penny.

Absolutely Amazing!!!

I have been studying Japanese for several years now but still knew I had a lot to learn. As a self-taught Japanese speaker, it can be quite discouraging when the tools are not able to meet you where you are at. However, iKnow! Has done a wonderful job combining an SRS with not only vocabulary, but also grammar. While grammar rules are not explicitly explained, one can't avoid picking up the grammar rules through the example sentences and the many venues of study. Finally able to focus my studies through a streamlined application that is beautiful on mobile as well as on the browser. Very user friendly and definitely worth the reasonable membership cost.
