You must know Kanji

This app was much better when the user could change the settings to romaji or kana.
Now I am forced to use the web version to get those features.

Response from developer

Thank you for your comment. We understand your disappointment and this was a hard decision for us to make. As we grow, we hope to be able to dedicate more resources and improve the Japanese learning features, at which time we will definitely consider bringing this back. Thanks for using our service!

Powerful learning App for Japanese

This app is powerful for learning contextual Japanese vocabulary, and covers reading, typing, sentence structure (grammar) and listening.

I noticed that my listening had improved significantly since starting this app.

My Japanese reading is much improved. It has helped me to rearrange the translation of the sentence in my mind.

The photo imagery is sometimes shaped like the Kanji being used. I assume this is a conscious decision, unless I am just seeing thing! It helps as an extra visual prompt to the meaning of the word in a quiz.

Why 4 stars?

Only needs to be able check other words in a sentence after the quiz for their meaning, just in case you had forgotten one of the words. This would be a nice addition.

Use it every morning on the train to and from work.

This app is a great app packed with content and is worth the subscription for learners on the move all the time. Give it a go...

Thanks for the valuable review. We will keep your feedback in mind as we continue to improve our service. Good luck with your studies! Thanks again for years of support!!

Good overall but needs improvements

It's a decent app and I ended up paying the (very high IMHO) $100+ for a year of access. The example sentences are good and help remember the vocabulary and grammar in context. That said, whoever designed the client-server code is an amateur or an imbecile. The app is constantly stalled waiting for the server, instead of synchronising gracefully in the background. After a minute, it gives you the option to resubmit... Which loses your progress for that lesson. WTF? Who cares about synchronising progress every damn lesson? Also sorely missing a feature to add a word to study in advance, i.e. a word you want to stay studying now, instead of waiting months until it finally comes up in the arbitrary order they programmed. Come on, fix these two issues otherwise no way I'll pay this much money again. Fix these issues soon and I will enroll my two kids on iPads.

Response from developer

Thanks for using our app! Our apologies for the inconvenience. We are going to look into the issue you reported so that please contact our support from your mobile app with the following details. ・Please send us a screenshot of the error message you get. ・Does your study data upload if you go online and refresh the home screen after you get the error? ・What do you mean by a feature "to add a word to study in advance"? Is this "Study more" button on session screen?

Great way to learn Japanese

This app is very good to learn new words and phrases, you can practice casually or hardcore, for example I often near to walk between buildings and I practice 5 words, this has helped a lot with Kanji too. I've been using it for a year now and my Japanese has improved a lot. Highly recommended

Great app

No complaints here. Best way to study on the go

Really involved - the best language learning app I've come across for Japanese!

Definitely seems a cut above a lot of the other Japanese language learning apps!

Review and Idea's

I really like this app and service for learning Japanese. I would like to see the option to get review reminders as notfications as soon as a course is ready to review (not just at a specfic time) in a future update.

Very good, room to improve

This app works very well for vocabulary. Fun, organized nicely, and it does work.

The Japanese and English courses are good, but it would be much better if they offered a wider variety of courses. The Japanese language site aimed at learning English is much harder more complex and offers much more. It would be nice if that were the same for Japanese and Chinese

Amazing app for learning Japanese

This app has had an amazing impact on my Japanese. The biggest weakness in my Japanese ability was a limited vocabulary. Let's be honest, memorizing vocab isn't really a fun activity. However, this app totally transforms vocab memorization. It has now become something I can do casually every day and consistently learn new words and reinforce what I already know. Without this app I probably would have given up.

Essential for Japanese study!

I love this program! iKnow's isn't a "teaching" program so to speak. It is used to help in vocabulary and forces you to read and understand words and phrases from repetition.

It's not a replacement for full on immersion, but you'll be learning words as they are commonly written like 勉強する (benkyousuru べんきょうする; to study) when most textbooks won't even introduce complex Kanji at that point.

It's a different approach and may not work for everyone. I've been using iKnow for over 80 hours and I feel I know a lot more than what I learned in the Genki I and II textbooks. It doesn't teach you conjugations or how things are used in context; hearing phrases over and over again you'll start to pick out things like "Hey he doesn't want to go to the library...so maybe it should look like in 行きません"

It's a bit hard to explain. But the cost of this program versus taking a class, buying expensive textbooks, or using *shudders* Rosetta Stone makes it well worth it!
