Brilliant! This export, and slight update works really well. Still a great classic Mac game. And to have them all here on the iPad is simply the best. If your a an, get the three Marathon games. Now I can pack up the old Performance 6360!!
  • Two decades later, still winning

Well, Id Software's port of Ultimate Doom is 36 levels long, hasn't seen an update since August 2011 and costs $5.49.
The Marathon games add up to ~85 levels (with an actual plot ;-)), have an active developer and are free.
Nearly 20 years on and the security officer continues to kick the space marine...

  • Brilliant however...

The game is fine except crucially the controls are an absolute pain to get used to. I think it's worth sticking with it especially if you've never played the original... I'm making progress but the whole save point system is something that can ratchet up the tension; if your low on hp/ammo.
  • Awesome... but

I love marathon and i still do but for some reason the screen stays black the controls come up but all i can see is black if this could be sorted it would be much appreciated (btw im on a second gen device)
  • Marathon revisited

After all these years and adaptions as Halo, etc., this still has to be one of the best RPG games. This is perhaps due to the story line that hangs all the episodes together and creates a great sense of anticipation. The mistake is to make infinite armour and shields available as this greatly reduces the challenge, especially as one cannot simply save whenever they wish.

  • great, but....

Great game and works well on the iPad however there is an issue with the auto recenter it's a complete nuisance and also stuck on even after going into general settings and turning it off it's still on this glitch needs to be fixed because auto recenter is just annoying.
  • Frog-blasting ventcores comes to iOS

Well, what can I say... it's Marathon. :)

About what you'd expect for a port to the iOS, but therein lies the achievement. Mad props to the guys behind this for fulfilling all expectations.

The downside of course is the touchscreen buttons (shoot, c'mon shoot already, shoot SHOOT!), but hey, you'll have that for every iPad game.

Comes with an HD version with all textures and features updated from the originals. Costs $0.99 as an in-app purchase but it's totally worth it.

If you've never played the game before, in for a treat. If you have, you won't at all be disappointed.

  • Great classic

Really nicely done. My only suggestion for improvement would be that due to the view springing back to centre as soon as you move forward it is impossible to reach certain areas using the grenade hopping technique. If there was an option to have the look spring disabled then this would not be an issue. In other words your left thumb controls the movement an strafing whilst your right is continually making sure you are facing the right way. This would mean you could run forward whilst looking down.

Other than that, thanks for bringing Marathon to iOS!

  • Retro Joy!

I loved it on the Mac many years ago, and this title has given me many hours of joy on the iPad. It may not have all the dimensions of more recent, higher tech FPSs, but this is history. And it still works as ripping fun. Try not to feel nervous edging round a corner in the dark! I played it without the in-app purchases, and the ads did get a bit annoying, but I'm going to purchase the add-ins now, simply to thank the developers. Loved it.

  • Great work - now on iPhone too

Shame the new UI makes iPad play a bit worse but guess it was a matter of compromise. On iPad the opening of doors and clicking switches now impossible without taking hand from where you're holding iPad to hit a pop-up in lower centre of screen! Detracts from gameplay when you often have to do so quickly.

Hope an option to use prev UI can be added - but if not so be it - this is free after-all.

    Orig review before update.
Fantastic work by the developer - works a treat - some battles can get a bit frenetic with the controls close together - but I take that as all part of the challenge. As another reviewer said, the standard textures are fine but I bought the 'HD' ones as we may as well have it as good as possible for a couple of quid.

Gameplay holds up better than expected after all these years - I'd forgotten how menacing were the floating cloak things that fire sparkly light stuff!!

There's so much gaming here, I'm amazed it's free. Iphone version would surely take-off but maybe controls too tricky to work well.
