  • Cool but there is one problem

I bought the full version and then I got a new ipad I want get the full version again but I have to pay for again and there's no restore in app purchase button
  • Officially addicted.

I play this game all the time, on both my iPod and iPad. It is that awesome. I really wish a lot of newer games were more like this, instead you usually have to track down 50 different materials in order to make some shiny new weapon! I'm really just tired of that cheap replayability mechanic. Magic jam for the win! (Though, still waiting on those UI improvements. Here's a hint: SEGA makes the awesomest interface!) It's a little short, but it's so sweet I hardly notice. It just makes me want to see the next game in this series that much sooner! Here's hoping.

This is one of few times when product advertising meets delivery. It's incredibly fun and interesting, and, as others have said, it smacks of games like Zelda, Metroid, and Castlevania. I add that it still has its own personality, complete with a sense of humor about itself, and things that appeal to both kids and adults. And despite the scantily clad women, I would say it's innocent/cartoony enough to give a kid. Graphics are gorgeous, they are EXPLODING with color, something I would wish of our higher powered home-bound gaming consoles.

  • Lovely little gem :D

After rooting through the retro offerings of Sonic CD and Midway Arcade, it's nice to finally did a game that is something new, but with the same looks as the 2D games of old. For anyone who is interested, Shantae is just that game.

I've only just gotten into the full version today, but from what I've experienced so far, I am loving it. Makes me feel even better to know that this version of the game costs much less than the DSi original, which would set you back around £10. As touch controls go, the on-screen D-Pad and buttons work extremely well, although the lack of a much-needed pause button was a bit of a turn off for me at first. I should also commend the team at WayForward for giving the option to buy the full version of the game as an IAP after sampling the demo, which saves the trouble of having to download two separate apps.

As good as the game is, however, it is a shame to know that, for now at least, this might be the only taste of Shantae that players in the EU (myself included) are ever going to get, seeing as how its predecessor was only released in the US. It's especially confusing for first time players to know that Risky's Revenge is more of a direct sequel than a stand-alone game.

I would love the people at WayForward to consider re-releasing the original Shantae game at some point in the future, either as a straight port of the first game or a remake made from the ground up for iOS.

  • Fantastic

This truly is an incredible game, having played it on the DSi and 3DS previously, I must admit that I do miss the physical buttons, though the touch controls do get the job done.

I'd love love LOVE for iCade support, so if you can then please incorporate this into a future update. Also it'd be nice to be able to remove or replace the blue border with something. The buttons would look better as pixel art I think, too.

Still, it's a brilliant game, recommend to Metroid or Castlevania fans.

  • Best Pixel art/animation on AppStore!

I've been waiting for this game to arrive on the AppStore for a while and am happy it is finally here. I would recommend this game to any fan of pixel art and Metroid/Castlevania style games, it's one of my personal favourites! However there are a few things that stand out for me with the iPad version (am yet to try the iPhone version)

    Pros
-beautiful high res vector artwork during title screen and dialogue.
-able to backup saved game through iCloud
    -GameCenter compatibility.

    Cons
-pixel art appears *slightly* blurry on iPad, coming from the DSi version this is a bit of a letdown
-touch screen controls work well enough, but again, the DSi controls are more comfortable
-and as someone else pointed out, the blue border is a bit of a distraction - hoping improvements can be made to that also.

Anyway, it's a fantastic game overall! Keep it up, WayForward! :]

  • Shame about the in app purchase...

I tried the game out on iPhone but found the controls a tad too fiddly on the small screen but thought it might make a good game for my iPad. So I made the in app purchase of the full game unlock on my iPhone then went to install it on my iPad a few days later to no avail - game still locked. A big let down.

  • Quite Rough Around the Edges

This is a decent metroidvania. Its art/musical style is very cute and likable, and despite having been originally built to be controlled with physical buttons, the looser virtual-button controls don't get in the way too much. None of its flaws are game-breaking, but most of them are, puzzlingly, very easy to both see and fix.
Most of the problems lie in the UI; the map, for example, does not include labels of the various regions and, when you're in a cave/dungeon, reports your position as the location from which you entered the cave. The latter problem becomes absurd when the cave in question is itself laid out on the map and has multiple entrances from various different areas. Moving along, the dash move (c wut i did thar?) hurt me more from sending me into a pit or enemy when I hit the button accidentally than it saved me in the approximately three times I actually wanted to use it; having just one equip slot to share among all spells and potions is shameful; and while the story isn't all that important, the ending was enormously lame and unsatisfying. Speaking of the end, there's no post-game whatsoever: the game doesn't even let you save after beating the final boss. And speaking of bosses, the difficulty of all of them depends almost exclusively on how much you stocked up on healing potions.
Don't get me wrong; it's still a refreshing blast from the past of gaming with a fantastic bang/buck ratio, but be prepared to constantly be thinking "why didn't they fix this oh-so-simple-and-obvious problem?" throughout your time with it. If WayForward actually puts some heart into this release instead of just dropping a one-time iOS port for some bonus cash, this could easily become a 4* in future updates.

  • Take the risk

I would never open a review for something by opening with such a superlative as brilliant, but on this occasion I will. Yes I understand the the blue border annoys some people, but for me I like it, I feel it keeps the game free from being obscured by your fingers. However it would be nice if people were given a choice.
Other than that, this is without doubt the best platformer on the app store, it wreaks of the old 16bit classics that a lot of us grew up playing and that lends to its addictiveness.

  • Great metroidvania tradition

Shantae is an extremely polished genre piece that follows right in the footsteps of 16-bit golden age series, like Metroid, Mega Man, Mario World, and Castlevania, with the whimsy of Zelda on top. If you grew up loving any of those games, if you enjoy exploring, backtracking, and acrobatics, this is right up your alley. It did take a bit to get going, but once you're in the forest and first labyrinth you can't quit. It was probably a mistake to not leave the forest in the free part, it gets fun quick there. With the amount I spend every year on platformers that I'm routinely disappointed with, I wish I could give every penny to this game.

I'm so freaking addicted it's not even funny. It looks fantastic on iPad, very polished 16-bit graphics, very well tested gameplay, and a ton of music inspired by old RPGs, made by virt of all people! For only 2.99 this is a complete no-brainer, since it was $12 on DS, buy now.

My only problem is actually that the game is a little too easy. I wish there was a hard mode to remove some of the save points and vials - but I grew up with unforgiving games that skewed my perception somewhat and made me a masochist for challenge. You'll love it, no matter how skilled you are, it's just that awesome.

  • Excellent (but)

The graphics are super. I've been looking for this type of running/jumping/ fighting game for my iPhone and this is exactly what I wanted. The controls are a little tough initially, but the fingers adjust quickly.

I'm stuck at the first boss level!! I made it into a monkey, I have the key, but the key won't open the door!!! I've tried every door I could find and there is only one that is locked. And the key doesn't work. Do I have the wrong door or is this a bug??? I have an iPhone 4 with the ios5.
