It’s better!
Terrible at the beginning, then better, then awful again, but now, strangely — and I hope I don’t jinx it — ok. Pages no longer take ages to load. Reading offline is easy again. You can continue reading a previous issue instead of having to load the new one first and then go back to the one you were reading. It shouldn’t be a surprise when something works as it’s supposed to, but let’s enjoy it while we can and hope it continues.

Doesn’t work properly
I was informed that the kindle version of The Guardian was going to be discontinued and offered a discount on the editions app. So I cancelled the kindle app and subscribed directly. My main reason for wanting an app is to be able to download and read offline on my iPad or phone. This app is not currently fit for purpose in that respect. Moreover even with a good internet connection, which is not always available to me, it is difficult to read and sticky with pages taking a long time to scroll. Very disappointing. Just about to attempt a reinstall to see if that helps.

Australian Editions Missing
Each time the app opens, the only available editions are the UK editions. Disappointing as this app is why I have a subscription 😞
Sluggish, no longer!
I had previously submitted this review: “I see that others have the same issue, the app being sluggish with delayed scrolling and unresponsive. I have mentionned this issue several times to the app developers, but have not received any reply. Issue is persisting and very annoying!”, but it must be said that the performance of the app has improved significantly recently. I can now swipe between pages, etc without any delay!

Recent problems
We’ve had this app for ages. Twice recently we’ve had to delete it and reinstall to make it run properly. It doesn’t seem to allow looking at previous editions, even a day or two ago. The first time we reported it. Now we’re just reinstalling but I wonder how many others have same issue. A friend’s iPad (older) has not had the same problem. Sept. 2021 No change to the consistency in this app. Once again, as a long-time subscriber I have been asked to sign in to the app. This is so irritating. Please fix this bug! If you do it for security purposes say so.
May 2023. Recent fix means my edition does not update for ages. My main issue on scrolling from screen to screen appears to have been solved at last.

Not fit for purpose
What has happened to this app? In recent months it has become increasingly sluggish: pages take longer to load; then they freeze repeatedly, making scrolling down and swiping to the next page ponderous. Previously, when I opened an article all of the images/photos associated with it were displayed. Now all I get is a grey box with a small question mark symbol in the middle of it. In today’s edition there is supposed to be a full page of photos in one article, but all I have got is a page of grey boxes with question marks. I used to enjoy reading my copy of the Guardian on this app. Now, it is deeply frustrating and irritating. If things don’t improve I will be cancelling my Guardian digital subscription as this app makes the product not fit for purpose.

Poor quality app that needs to be re-installed every couple of weeks
I have been using this app since 2017 as a Guardian subscriber. Until about a year ago, it worked well. Then it became flaky and unreliable. The swipe gesture to move between articles became sluggish and unresponsive, as did the scrolling within an article. And now, the images which illustrate the articles fail to load. The only fix is to delete the app from my iPad and reinstall it, but this is only a temporary solution because after a couple of weeks, the images once again fail to load. This isn’t acceptable behaviour, and I should know, because I’m a software developer myself.

Frustrating
I tend to read articles from earlier editions and leave them open to continue later. Unfortunately, when returning to the article it apoears for a short time then disappears, then message 'content not found'. Other times it is immediately overwritten with the latest daily edition. Then need to reload the daily edition I really want and then remember in what section the article I want to continue reading is located. A simple fix would be to not automatically install the latest edition and give the user the option when they are ready! Guardian app developers please fix this.

Great content, UI needs work
I love reading the guardian’s journalism, but the massive white space down the side is such a waste on my iPad. Plus a dark mode would be good instead of everything being on a white background.
Seems a weaker offering compared to the Guardian “Live” app
I’ve used the original Guardian app for years, and was interested to give Editions a go to compare, wondering if I’d been missing out on a superior reading experience now that I own an iPad.
Sadly however, having given it a go, I can’t see why I would ever choose to use Guardian Editions over the other app, as it seems to me to be weaker overall, with no real benefits I could find.
The formatting of articles means they normally don’t fill the screen, and I often found myself scrolling down a thin looking column of text with bare white areas either side of it. There’s no dark mode, which there is in the other app. And also there’s no option to save articles to read later, only to share them.
It certainly could be improved in the future… but for now I’ll definitely be deleting Guardian Editions, and instead continuing to use the other app and the Guardian website, both of which I find to be a better experience.
