  • Still has bugs

Looked forward to the new version having been a print subscriber for many years and a digital subscriber when the print ones started going missing in the post. However I purchased a years subscription in February and it insists I still have to pay for each issue before it can be downloaded. Love the magazine and content, hate the inability to be able to get what I have already paid for. If an update appears and corrects this problem permanently I will give five stars without hesitation.

  • Your previous issues are available in guitarist archive app

But none the less, this is a disappointing downgrade. Issues are now excruciatingly slow to download and you can't start reading Neil the whole thing has finished. Lets hope the content will be much improved to make up for it (to be fair guitarist aren't even pretending that this will be better, just easier for them to produce). We shall see whether my subscription gets cancelled IF my issue ever downloads.
Update: finally downloaded the issue! Images fuzzy on ipad2 unless you zoom in. Adverts have returned which I feel is actually a bonus. Video sound is controlled by the iPad mute switch (like alerts) not volume like other videos or music. All in all they have taken everything that was great about the guitarist iPad experience and downgraded it. V sad.

Quick update on my previous review as we have had an update which now makes download even slower. I have cancelled my subscription and will find something else to read. The content of the magazine is still pretty good, but as its virtually unreadable on an iPad 2......why bother!

  • What?

What happened here? I have no complaints about the magazine. It's still good, nothing has changed there. But this update - this whole new version on the original 'Guitarist Deluxe' has ruined it! I owned and enjoyed several copies on the original version, but I've updated the app, and now not only are they not in my library, but apparently they no longer even exist! A disappointing update to what used to be a great app.

  • Disastrous update

Not sure how anyone can see this as a step forward from the Deluxe edition.

One of the selling points was supposed to be faster download times. Well so far, this version is massively slower to download issues than the old one, and we don't get to see the media without a connection.

On The iPad, the experience is no better than reading a PDF. All the innovative interactive stuff that made the deluxe version a joy to use is gone.

I think others have said this, but on the iPhone it's a pointless gimmick - too difficult to read.

It seems to me that this update is all about saving money for the publisher and nothing about providing a great experience to the reader. I suppose it just about deserves the 1 star for being cheaper.

Having said all that, Guitarist's magazine content is still as superb as ever. It's just so disappointing that it used to have a superb iPad experience to go with it.

  • It's sad

I get why they wanted to change the format: it's faster and easier to create new issues, its easier (if not automatically) to adapt for iPhone/iPod and there's no need to spend time and money to make an additional (complex) layout. But this new format doesn't seem to be implemented right.

You have to zoom in constantly, but while zoomed in landscape mode, the vertical scrolling often doesn't work, trying to scroll horizontally instead. This issue comes and goes as it pleases. The image galleries open smaller pictures than the initial previews. The text and graphics render very slowly.

That's technical issues I'm sure they will eventually overcome. But the extra content and, most importantly, the interactivity I instantly fell in love with GD for? It's not really there. Less extra content, zero interactivity, and still no bookmarks. It's just normal Guitarist.

The Deluxe was an amazing experience and I'm sad to see it go.

Gave two stars for the attempt.

  • What happened

So I signed up for a subscription. Signed up for a year back in July.
I got 2 or 3 issues and then it all stopped.

So what's up I paid and I love the magazine.
But now what I haven't received the last 3 issues.
And I see from other reviews other people having similar problems

    Thanks
    Hugh McCloy
  • Messy Upgrade

Updated to the latest version from the original app and all my old issues were gone and couldn't be restored in the new app. I have been a subscriber for over a year so this was more than irritating.

Fortunately, there is an app called GD Archive that seems to let me download all my previously purchased issues. The issue is it is a standalone app, which is not in Newstand.

I gave the original GD app 5 stars, but this new app is getting 1 star for now.

  • Poor update

This is a very poor update for a magazine I very much enjoyed. The new version when down loaded wipes all previous versions without notice. You are then advised to down load the archive app, for which the link does not work and you are left with a blank screen. If you then search for the archive app in iTunes and download it you realise it's no longer part of newsstand and can't be placed in the newsstand folder which again is poor. After you finally locate the archive app, downloaded it you realise it still does not automatically pick up your old additions and you will have to download them again!!!! If this is an attempt to drive customers away from the digital addition and back to the paper additions it has worked in my case!

  • No more deluxe

So this is the (lasting) legacy of the Deluxe edition. Disappointed with the decision to revert to a legacy publishing style ie printed page style. The innovative approach of the Deluxe version set it apart and I truly believe that usability has suffered big time with the latest version. It is barely useable on the iPad and on the iPod/iPhone it is pure tokenism The download still takes a considerable time, so nothing gained there, and now I can't enjoy the multimedia aspects when out of coverage. Especially frustrating when travelling. Ok it's now cheaper, but frankly that's not part of my buying criteria. So, no more Deluxe = no more subscription.

  • Lost all old issues

Ditto... All my old issues are gone.
    Deleted all, rebooted, and restored.
    No luck.
If you have back issues, do NOT UPGRADE.
