Very good but needs some attention

Google support means Nest can no longer be accessed off an Apple TV. However, a Nest App can still be used on an iPhone thankfully. It also means a Google account is a requirement. Troubleshooting support from Google is good when things go wrong but such information updates should be available beforehand e.g. on transformer brands and voltage. The subscription is reasonable. The app has a confusing mode switch called ‘home’ and ‘away.’ Home means there will be no alerts or recording. Away means there is recording on and doorbell alerts. Otherwise, face recognition works well and you can save names to faces. Occasionally, unique door chimes are released such as at Christmas time, which is nice. It’s an intuitive app, well designed, and reliable for the most part. The service is generally reliable but suffers from lag, black outs, and non-connectivity. When you need it most it might let you down e.g., the doorbell rings and you check who it is but it’s buffering away with no footage available.
The codec for the video is also not fully provided by Nest/Google so the footage received must be converted using a codec on your device. This means your device CPU does the heavy lifting and it battery intensive to take the weight off the Google servers.

Getting from bad to worse

I’m not sure why am I asked to write a review every time I open the app?!? No positive change yet, actually, is getting worse! When I was researching which doorbell to buy, Nest was in my opinion the best choice, it ticked all the boxes. Two & half years after, it seems it’s getting worse by the day. The connection is very slow, although we have a super fast internet connection at home and a stable full range 4G. Whenever I want to check what a push notification was received, by the time I get to connect and open the specific seen, I give up considering that you can’t see anything more than a frozen clip. The actual video recording won’t start at all. ‘Person at the door’ ringing and I am trying to connect using ‘Talk’ function option, however, by the time I get connected, whoever was at the door, is long gone! It’s very important to mention, we have been paying for the premium extras, cloud recordings etc, buy decided to cancel it due to the poor inability to use the service. Poor, poor, poor!

This ie garbage … don't buy

This product is garbage. Don’t buy it. It’s a complete waste of money with no real security. I found it incredibly difficult to use properly. Overall, Google products are disappointing.

Unable to play live video

Sometimes my camera notifies me of activity in my home it sees. But when I go to check what’s going on the camera fails to load. I have extremely fast internet and everything’s plugged in so I see no reason why I can’t load my home security device.

Worst Google App, Since the Purchase by Google

Please don’t confuse my two star rating with my feelings of how I used to rate it…. I actually really lit it and had high expectations when Google purchased Nest, only to be left brokenhearted.
It seems apparent that Google isn’t spending any resources on further development, or perhaps even upkeep. It feels as though Google would like to be rid of the Nest app, but has failed to improve their own software enough in order to do so.
This feeling was definitely apparent after our purchase of the battery camera Google sold as a “Nest” product, but seemingly never intended it to be connected to the app we purchased it because of.

Very unreliable

Despite addressing wifi extenders, app updates etc, this system quite often has my outdoor cameras “offline.”
Amy system is likely better than this.

Good interface but too slow

The spinner shows up a lot and I have 1gbps internet with good wifi. Every time enter even after short app switching, 5 second spinner. Tap on something, another 3 seconds. The experience is degraded by so much waiting, I almost want to just switch services

Great potential but fails

Fails to allow multiple products to be installed. Ongoing issue that Google doesn’t seem to be able to or will to solve.

No sensible notification deletion

If you have a Nest Protect smoke alarm, you cannot turn off its notifications. If you have a power outage, each Protect device sends a notification. If you have multiple Protect devices and have a series of power fluctuations, you can easily rack up a hundred or more notifications. And each one has to be deleted by swiping it sideways. Do you know how much pain that causes? I do, I’ve just had to delete 100 notifications! This issue has been raised previously, multiple times, but they can’t be bothered to fix it. I doubt they even have the grace to feel embarrassed, which they should!
