  • Too Much Of the Same.

It would be much better for the news paper to have all new information.
  • The SA Express News is our news source

The San Antonio Express News is the source for the most accurate and broad news in our community and beyond. Everyday it provides new information plus a vibrant editorial page. It is the first newspaper I read every morning - online of course.
  • Latest Update Not an Improvement

I am not sure the the latest version is actually an improvement over the previous one. Main complaints are: (i) why in the world with the “Main news” section have so many articles on the Spurs? All of those belong solely in the sports section. It makes no sense for users looking for latest news to have to wade thru a Main section cluttered with Spurs articles. (ii) The “Main News” section, instead of showing stories from today’s print edition, contains a lot of really old articles (the same ones I have been seeing for weeks). For example, today (Jan 21) there is still being carried in the Main News section a Jan 2 article on the first baby born in S.A. on New Year’s Day and another old article on an old Mayor - why in the world???

  • Terrible

As an online only subscriber this app is terrible and makes the subscription useless. Continuously takes to you the subscription manager where you can successfully login only to be redirected back to the article for one second then redirected back to the subscription manager. The only parts of the app that works are the headline browser pages. Then, to top things off, when you submit a support request from the app the mail is rejected by the mail server because the support email address is unknown. Just terrible. I regret that I bought my subscription. I would give the app negative stars if I could. They should pay me to be the software tester. I'm paying for something that I'm not getting and then finding the problems with their stuff for free as a bonus. I won't renew unless this thing gets a lot better. Terrible. Simply terrible.

  • Unresponsive, repetitive content poor performance

Save your money. If you're expecting the same content as the printed newspaper subscription, it's not there. Most often the same content is repeated for days. Most often, the app is unresponsive with articles simply refusing to load for extended periods- most often I can completely finish a complete breakfast without one single article loading. Not an issue with my wireless as everything else is fast. Jus t not THIS app. Seems to get better later in the day. If you're looking for news content, there are many other options available, even free ones that's not repetitive and slow to load. With the decline in local print news, you would think an online offering would be robust, up to date and responsive. Not the case on any point with this app.

  • Fix this thing! (Update*)

*What happened to the app reset feature? Before, if the app froze, you could go back into settings and use the reset to fix it....it's gone! Please return it! Since the latest update, the first article you tap will start loading and take forever and often just gets stuck. Can't read it if it won't open!*
I'd give it zero stars if I could. The old app worked well, and the new one, while I preferred the old version, would at least open before this last update. And even though I AM a paid subscriber to the app, it denies access to extra content like recipes. I've emailed and they just don't seem interested in addressing that issue. I don't want a paper delivered...this should be a full-featured alternative or state that you're not getting access. If they can't get it together, I won't renew.

  • Good needs a few tweaks.

If you try to read some articles the advertising banners coverup the lower paragraphs making it impossible to read this portion of the article.
An article will sometimes give a link but it does not provide the reader with a hot link nor does it allow the reader to copy the link and manually paste the link into ones web browser.
The game section is slow in responding to touch and sometimes you must touch an area six or more times before it will respond or go to a different zone enter some item that you know is wrong and then return to the zone you want before it will accept you response.

  • Pretty Good

I haven't had any issues with the Express-News app. It worked the very first time, it gives me access to many of the stories in the paper, and it even has comics.
It would be better if it had ALL the stories from the paper (if they're all there, I can't find a bunch of 'em), ALL of the comics from the paper (it only has a few comics, and not all of them are the same as in the print edition - more comics is something I think the print edition needs anyway), and it could have easier random access to sections (the Coverflow-like option is nice, but a quick way to get from the first section to, say Sports, without going through the other sections) would be very handy.

  • Will Eat 3G Plan in 1 Night

Last night I accidentally left my 3G turned on and awoke to a drained 3G account. I almost always turn it off at night but right before going to bed I checked my 3G data usage by going to Settings/Cell Data/View Account. When you do that it turns on 3G. I didn't know that. My usage was 97 of 250mb used.
When the iPad goes to sleep it turns the wifi off to save battery. Because i left my 3G on, this app was able to download the morning paper while the wifi slept.
I received an email at 5 AM from AT&T telling me I was down to 20% remaining. At 10 AM it was all gone. Fortunately my 3G plan wasn't set to renew automatically.
This app needs the option to "download via wifi only". With that maybe I would reinstall. But leaving 3G on at night is just too easy of a mistake to make.

  • Great Start

It's a good start to what could be a great app. I really like the interface between sections and the scrolling list of articles in the lower left corner (though this should be more front and center). Still, when you choose an article to read, too little of the article is displayed on the screen. When you need to go to the next page the app is clunky, almost as if it is re-opening the article rather than simply moving to the next page. The USA Today app serves as a good model, scroll down to see the rest of the article, swipe right or left to move forward or back in the section (where the next article opens smoothly, not appearing to re-launch).

In general, it's good, but it could be great. I eagerly await the next update. Most great apps get great over time rather than being that way right out of the box.
