  • Great before the last update

The last update has been frustrating. I used to download videos onto my phone, simply, without any issues. Now I’m forced to transcode it to a high low or medium version. I don’t want to transcode it. I don’t want to wait for the transcoding and I don’t want a duplicate, I just want the video in its original state. And why would anyone want to choose “high” when it makes the file size bigger than the original??

  • Works as a video player nothing else

It’s a good video player but it won’t let me download videos that I can download on my iPad. It just says not downloadable content is a available which is incorrect. Not great
  • Great except for the last update

This app worked great for me until the last update. Now, when watching videos on my iPad, while on the same network as the NAS itself, it opens up DS File and plays them through that app. On top of that, 99% of the time, it opens the video 1 second before the end, plays that 1 second, then returns me to DS Video. So I have to tap on the video progress bar within that one second to scrub to a different location and can have more time to get to the beginning. Synology, please fix huge and pointless annoyance immediately.

  • Very Buggy

Really annoying when workarounds are needed to play some types of media. There is no setting to disable logging in - it’s the only app I have that need logging into every day. I switched to Plex.
  • Still not functional

This is not a bad app, when it works. That said, there is still a critical flaw when used in conjunction with some synology products. In my case, the DS218PLAY. The issue is that any video transcoded by the NAS and downloaded to the app in iOS is unplayable, displaying only solid green video. This has been verified after lengthy exchanges and testing by Synology tech support, with remote access to unit. They are aware of the issue but their recommendation was to use VLC the player instead. Not really an acceptable response from a company that posts the ability to transcode and download video to your device as a key feature. Please fix.

  • not support with apple tv

This app can’t open on apple tv
  • Needs better parental controls

I use this all the time on my Apple TV. Or rather my 7 year old daughter does. All my movies are stored on the NAS and it is fabulous for streaming over the home network.

You can separate our kids and adult accounts on it, to limit the movies you can watch based on movie classification. But changing accounts on the Apple TV is painful. Because my daughter would love to watch movie after movie all day, I put a PIN on all content. But the PIN must be entered using the Apple TV remote and the numbers are visible in screen and not greyed out. You literally need to either send your kids out of the room or stand in front of the TV to obscure the PIN.

So great for home movies and the like, but could use improvement for greater parental control.

Controlling through an app on your phone - maybe with a randomised PIN or 2 factor authentication - would be ideal. Right now I am looking for alternative solutions.

  • Worth buying a Synology NAS

I’ve been using this app for years. It’s great. Doesn’t play EVERY media file, but I’ve learned to work well with it. People who give it a crap review or say it doesn’t work, simply never set it up correctly. A monkey could do it.
  • Doesn’t support a large amount of video types.

Media that plays fine on my PC no longer works through this app. Very disappointed, main reason I purchased this NAS was the ability to stream my media content to my PC and mobile devices. This software is garbage.
  • Works well, but needs an update...

Love this app which seems to work pretty well, but third party remote is not compatible with the app.

You can only use the original Apple TV (4K) touch surface remote to control the playback of video. Trying to use a third party remote such as a harmony remote paired for use with the Apple TV will not allow the play bar timeline to be scrolled through. Also, CC is always turned on by default for every episode and has to be manually disabled. These are quite annoying!
