Leave a Review Grocery List
  • I love Out of Milk...

...but recent upgrades have made it less user friendly. The problems I have seen are with sorting categories and editing items. I shop at the same grocery store every week. I walk through the store the exact same way every trip. When I create a list for that store, I should be able to pre-set the order of the categories on that list. However, no matter how many times I sort the categories on my list...every week they go back to being ordered a different way! The app forces me to re-sort my grocery list every week, which is ridiculous, because it won’t save my changes to the Manage Categories list. Second- I have to add prices to my items EVERY WEEK. For example, I buy Cheerios every week. But every week when I make my list, the edited item from the previous week (where I’ve entered the price) is sorted to Uncategorized. So I have to select the correctly categorized version of the item and re-enter the price EVERY WEEK. Or, I have to choose the correctly priced version of the item, and re-categorize it to Breakfast EVERY WEEK! Out of Milk is intended to make shopping easier and more organized, and it used to do that! But recently, it has more than doubled the time it takes to make a list, and increased the amount of time I have to spend in the store every week. Please, PLEASE, fix these issues because I love Out of Milk and I don’t want to use a different list app!

    Developer Response

Hey There, I am very sorry you are experiencing issues with the custom categories feature. This is actually a known bug that is currently on our roadmap for development. While I cannot say exactly when it will be fixed, I promise you we know about it & are working really hard to address it. If you have any further questions, or would like to discuss this further, please reach out to us at support@outofmilk.com. Thank you!

This is a great app that I can share with my husband which helps with grocery shopping. I also use it for other lists of things I need to procure from various stores. One major issue for me is when I want to share the list via email, it’s very inconvenient that it also includes all of the checked items. Here is the scenario for me: I use several natural supplements from a particular alternative doctor. The list I keep has all of the supplements and instructions for myself in the notes. I uncheck the items I need at any particular time and share via email to the doctor to put together an order for me. I have to manually go through and delete each of the checked items as well as the data in the notes each time I use the share option. Also, selecting and deleting doesn’t work in this scenario. I have to hold down the delete key.

  • Best Ap Ever

So glad to have learned of this a few years ago and have told others about it. You almost always have your phone with you, so you can add to your shopping list wherever you are and whenever something pops into your mind. And since you almost always have your phone with you, you’re going to have it with you at the store, instead of a piece of paper sitting at home on your counter! There are many great features, some I’m still discovering. Probably my favorite is the availability of having different lists for different stores. Oh, and the fact that you just check off each item as you put it in your cart, which makes it available for the next time is amazing! This has made shopping much better. Wish it had been around when my six children were all home.

  • Very useful little app!

I really like this app. You can make a pantry list of the things you buy most often and then you can easily move the items you need to your shopping list without having to type in the item. I also love that you can order the categories to match your stores layout, so you can move through the store and see what’s on your list where you are in the store. Once you put the item in your cart, you touch the circle next to the item on your list and the item is removed. So you know that you’re done with that item. You can create new categories, add pricing and shop any way that is comfortable for you.
The only complaint I have is that the categories don’t seem to stay where I put them. So I have to re-order them. It’s not hard but just something I don’t think I should have to do. Maybe I’ve missed something but all in all, it’s a very useful tool.

  • Almost perfect

It’s a very useful app that I’ve been using for years. I add items to my list all week long so it’s ready for my once a week grocery shopping. You can drag items from top to bottom or anywhere in between to organize your list according to your grocery stores layout. All produce items are dragged to the top and milk and ice cream go to the bottom. When I get to ShopRite everythings in order.

Anyhow, as I type this on my iPad it would be great if I could add items to the list and have them appear on my phone. I only take my phone to the grocery store. The only way to do it is email myself. But, then I have two list, not one easy one. Grrrrr

Also, the iPad version is really annoying because I have to turn my iPad vertically.

  • Not As Good As It Used To Be

Two years ago, I’d’ve given this app five stars. Simple, clean, intuitive - all great in an app. But recent so-called “improvements” have made the app nearly impossible to use in some ways. These are technical glitches, not even interface issues. Example: trying to change lists, but the keyboard is launched and can’t be dismissed. It hangs up so all you see is the first part of your lists. You have to completely close the app and relaunch. It comes up fast, but it’s still annoying. Thankfully, they have gotten rid of the ad that used to pop up every time you switched screens or lists, I do appreciate that.

I would just say to the developers: when it ain’t broke, you don’t need to fix it. The constant “innovating” has only created lateral changes and not real improvements.

  • Frustrating

I use this app on an iPad — and that is the problem. It has many nice features, but it absolutely refuses to work in landscape mode. That just happens to be the way I prefer to use my iPad.
I long ago made a list of regularly ordered items, which the app calls the Pantry List. The longer I’ve had the program the more complete my list. I go through the kitchen (and sometimes the house) checking what I need and what I don’t. I usually leave the iPad in one place, returning each time I want to check on the next item. That’s fine, since my kitchen is small. I then transfer all the things I want to a Grocery List.

I then order my groceries on line. Here is where it gets awkward. First, I don’t like using the Web in Portrait mode — but there’s no choice because Out Of Milk refuses to work in landscape mode. So I have to order everything in portrait. Unfortunately, the grocery ordering websites are set up for landscape and I have to use a lot of horizontal scrolling to see everything. So, I don’t like ordering groceries anymore on Out of Milk’s app.

I’ve written to the company that makes the app, and never gotten a response. They’re about to lose a customer!

  • Too clumsy to be an every day app now

This app seems to have fallen from grace as it is now buggy and makes simple tasks frustrating. It will immediately erase ingredients I have just added just because the app decided to sync then but is also slow to sync between my partner’s app and mine. There has been multiple times we’ve left the store before our app has synced to show recently added items. The pop up every time you open the app which requires you to turn on notifications is infuriating as I don’t want more notifications on my phone and there are what feels like way too many ads scrolling. I think it also crowd sources some items despite them being miscatagorized so my items don’t even sort into correct groups. Sorry app, I just can’t use you anymore. :(

  • Has Changed a lot

When I first got this app I recommended it to my mother and my sister and they both use it now. But in the last six months it has changed a lot with our ads popping up constantly and then there’s something where they want you to finish this 100% you have to turn on your location and a few other things and if you don’t do it it just keeps yelling at you to do it… If I get anywhere near a Walmart even if I’m not shopping it will tell me this is what’s on sale at Walmart I do not like any of these features at all all I want is a simple list that I can bring with me to the store and this is making me rethink my decision of having this app at all I just want to unload it from my phone… If they had a premium subscription where I could get rid of these stupid ads I would do it but that option doesn’t seem availableIf this doesn’t change I’m going to delete it and go back to just doing my grocery list on Excel like I used to before this App was created (more than likely there are a lot of typos in here I’m not going back over it to check)
