Poor search function

The search function still needs a lot of work. For example, if you search for a term like “chestnut purée”, you get five hits. Only one recipe had chestnut purée. The others just had some kind of purée in the ingredients. But oddly that’s not all the recipes that have purée in the ingredients. And if you search for just chestnut you get tons of recipes because I guess in Britain, they’re such a thing as chestnut mushrooms.
I have no idea how to search function is working, but it’s certainly not useful.
The guardian recipes are great, and having an app that gives you better ways of finding a recipe would be fantastic. But this is just not that app.

Proven recipes, great layout, realistic pictures

I don’t have to hope there are no typos in the recipes. The layout of the pages is excellent - very little scrolling up and down. No ads! I can search by the creator of the recipe, type, event, and ingredients. I may not make the recipe of the day but it often inspires me or reminds me of something I haven’t made for a while.

All the recipes at your thumbtips

Superb addition to the Guardian family-easy to follow and search recipes, no more cutting out from the paper, easy to bookmark. Great selection of recipes and hopefully some videos may be added in future versions. Well done Guardian team

Not nice to use

There’s undoubtedly great content here but the app is half-baked. The search function is not very sophisticated, and the keyboard is always popping up or staying up when it’s not necessary, making it a frustrating user experience. Also, on the newspaper app comments are such a useful component of recipes, so it’s really a loss not to have them. I am astonished this is a paid app given how poor it is functionally - I was given a free 6 months access because I subscribe to the Guardian. I use the newspaper recipes a lot, but there’s no way I’d pay money for this will continue to just use the Guardian app for recipes.

Great collection of recipes

Love this app - so many recipes, nicely grouped, by many famous chefs. You can also search for recipes using a particular ingredient which is handy. I like that I can also save recipes.

Beautiful food, very usable app

Have used this app nearly every day since downloading it a month ago. It’s very down-to earth but allows you to elevate simple ingredients as you’d expect from the guardian’s stable of cooking heavyweights. Great search function for fridge-busting. Ka rawe (awesome).

Fine now but..

How often are the recipes updated? Are the daily recipes from the Guardian added to the app each day? Recipe apps need to be more than simple collections of old recipes

Response from developer

Hi there, as Feast is a new app, we've started by choosing the most popular recipes. We're adding more and more on a daily basis, both new recipes and ones from our archive.

Hi there, the Feast app aims to bring the best of the Guardian's recipes into a conveniently packaged app to make cooking easy and enjoyable. It is available for subscription on a monthly or annual basis, and we offer new users the chance to try it out via a free trial in the app.

Persevering with using app especially as developers have taken note of my comments

All of the comments below still stand for the time being, however at least the developers have bothered to reply to me and these things are being worked on. - I love Feast in its paper form; it has to be the best food supplement across all the UK newspapers- so cannot help but use this app daily despite my negative comments. The Guardian offers such a great service overall as an independent newspaper that I am willing Feast to be a success!

Since my review of 19 April when I first got the app I’ve been using the Feast app and trying to give it a chance to prove me wrong. Sadly there are 2 major issues: the search is asynchronous which means it’s incredibly laggy and dependent on the speed of my connection. Secondly the My Feast area is a good idea but there’s no ability to catalogue my saved recipes - I’ve already saved quite a few and if I continue to do this it will really help to save them under types of recipe.

Hi there, we're sorry that you're experiencing performance issues. They've been fixed in the latest update, Version 1.4. Please also ensure you're on the latest version of iOS. Also, thank you for your feedback about cataloguing saved recipes. We appreciate you taking the time to raise this and we will pass this on to our product team to investigate further.

Finally!

So great to have so many Feast recipes in one small device. At the moment, my kitchen windowsill is fully lined with paper editions. I look forward to the time when most recipes from those will be available on the app. In addition, the photography and graphics are equal to those in the magazine. Very visually appealing. My one suggestion would be to add a ‘Recently Viewed’ tab to make it easier to find those recipes that have been, well, recently viewed, thereby avoiding the search process again. I also have a question. Many commentators here write about their six free months. I got two free weeks, and I’ve supported the Guardian financially for years!
