Better to use the website

As other users have commented, using the search function is very laggy - the app slowly tries to find recipes using the first letters of your search term slowing down your ability to enter the rest of it! Half the screen is taken up by the keyboard when I’m trying to read a recipe - can’t seem to swipe it away.

But the biggest issue is this is a partial selection of recipes so something you like the look of in the paper won’t necessarily be on the app.

I’ve cancelled my 6 month free subscription after a few attempts at using this, and deleted the app.

Hi there, we're sorry that you're experiencing performance issues and and an issue with the keyboard. They've been fixed in the latest update, Version 1.4. Please also ensure you're on the latest version of iOS. Also, we're sorry that you've not been able to find the recipes you're looking for. As Feast is a new app, we've started by choosing the most popular recipes. We're adding more and more on a daily basis, both new recipes and ones from our archive.

Customizable?

Seems to have some fun, if not too many practical, recipes. And who doesn’t love Yotam Ottolenghi? Like the big, bright pictures. Wish could organize the MyFeast section in folders. We use NYTimes and ATKitchen so will explore this more but really need customizable folders.

Hi there, thank you for using the app. Organising saved recipes is on our radar!

Really nice user experience

I’m really enjoying this app so far, I like being able to search by ingredient as well as by the author of the recipe, though I don’t think the full archive is here yet? It’s visually appealing and easy to navigate and I really like it. The app is superior to other recipe websites too

Unstable and crashing

This app seems like a good idea - I've been saving Guardian recipes in Evernote for years.

However, it has crashed every time I've "filtered" to a specific writer, either at the point of selecting the writer or, if it stays open through that stage, at the point of selecting a recipe from the filtered list.

Filtering from one of the other available selections (ie "Indian" or "Italian") seems to be OK.

From a usability point of view, having to "filter" to see the list of writers is much less convenient than using the prompt boxes under "search"; and the carousel with writer photos is another stumble in the way of easy use when prompt boxes with sriter names would suffice.

It's also not the fastest app, especially at start-up.

Having said all that, if you can crack these issues I'll be using it a lot.

Easy to use, with great features

I’ve always found it frustrating when cooking/recipe apps lack the features required to have an easy cooking experience. The cooking feature on the Feast app is intuitive, and I love that I can save recipes for later. As a vegan, I’m excited to see loads of really creative, inventive plant-based recipes - not the boring old usuals - as well as handy recipe collections for parties or time limitations. Looking forward to seeing how this app develops further.

Very good, a couple of small tweaks needed

This is a great app overall. It would be even better if it had a ‘cook mode’ button to turn off the phone screensaver while you’re cooking. I’ve seen this on other cooking apps. Very handy not to have to try and unlock the phone when you’ve got wet / mucky hands. At the moment I go into the phone settings and switch it off manually… then have to remember to switch it back on again afterwards.

Also there is a bug that needs fixing. If you search for something then select a recipe from the results the keyboard keeps popping up over the recipe. I’ve worked around this by saving the recipe then going back out of search and navigating to the saved recipe folder. A bit of a faff though.

Well designed recipe app

Six month free trial for Guardian subscribers. The filters allow specifying gluten and dairy free recipes and when both were set about half of the recipes were still available. The recipes themselves look good and the layout is nice and clear. I also liked the UK to US translation popup that explains the different names for some ingredients. The free recipe app I was using before is getting more and more adverts so I’m going to delete it and switch to this.

What I’ve been waiting for!

I have love the Guardian’s recipe content for so long and it’s wonderful to have so many of the recipes I have admired in my pocket. Photography is beautiful and the cook along feature is really useful. I also really appreciate being able to filter my dietary preferences and being able to search by ingredient.

Poor user experience

Click on search and the search bar is hidden at the top of the page - you have to scroll to the top to find it and you have to know or play around with it to discover that! Why doesn’t the search box appear on top of or overlay your current screen?
You can’t get rid of the Apple keypad when in recipes so half the screen is consumed by the keyboard and the recipe effectively blocked.
It also looks to be missing an awful lot of content / recipes. Don’t throw away your paper editions of Feast just yet.

Hello, we're sorry you're experiencing performance issues with the app. The team have identified some potential bugs that are causing this issue. Thanks for your patience while we work to fix this as a matter of priority.

Free?

The app is free.

If you want to look at ANY recipe in the app it requires a subscription.

I have been a big fan of the Guardian news app for years. Thought I would give this a try.

Calling this FREE is completely misleading.

Do better Guardian.
