Developers encrypt backups to prevent data portability 😡

2024 Update: HashPhotos has a backup feature that backs up all the tags and metadata, but the developers have taken steps to encrypt the backups, which probably tells you everything you need to know about their views on data portability. This is such a loss because it’s otherwise such an amazing app that it really doesn’t need vendor lock in. To the devs: PLEASE give us a method (or at least open the possibility of someone building a third party app) to export / sync our tags. I don’t want to use them to LEAVE HashPhotos, I want to use them so I can STAY with it! Without having my tags on my desktop there’s no point in using many of the HashPhotos features, and I WANT to use them! PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THATS HOLY LET US HAVE ACCESS TO OUR OWN TAGS! Previous review: This is a pretty amazing photo editor with one fatal flaw: all the work you’ve put into organizing your photos is locked into hash photos on your iPhone - there’s no reasonable way to get that data into another piece of software like Lightroom for example, or when you need to remove some photos or videos from your phone to clear up space (sure you can back up your photos via iCloud, but none of the keywords will go with them). So as much as I love this app, having my organization work locked into HashPhotos kills it for me. If the developer manages to open up the data in some way so that the tags and notes can be used outside of HashPhotos, I’ll come back to it instantly, but I’ve spoken with them via email multiple times and unfortunately that doesn’t seem to be happening 🙁

Response from developer

Thank you for using HashPhotos and leaving such detailed feedback. The Backup/Restore feature in Settings is designed for restoring the app to its original state in scenarios like reinstalling HashPhotos. The backup file is structured specifically for app use and is encrypted to ensure users don't accidentally tamper with it. You can find more details in our FAQ(https://www.hashphotos.app/faq/en/#KB0011). We've also added a brief explanation within the app for clarity. For metadata such as keywords, notes, and ratings, HashPhotos embeds this information into the photo's metadata when you use the export, share, or album export features. This ensures compatibility with most standard photo management apps. (Note: Metadata inclusion depends on Settings > Privacy options, but it’s always included with album export.) Regarding the ability to export internal data like HashPhotos' photo IDs or keywords directly, this isn't currently feasible as these are managed using iOS specific photo IDs, which are not a universal standard. If there are apps or tools you know of that could utilize this data format, please let us know - we’d be happy to explore ways to support them. If you’ve emailed us before and didn’t receive a reply, we sincerely apologize. We respond to all inquiries unless blocked by spam filters. Feel free to reach out again via the app’s feedback feature or at support@hashphotos.app Thank you again for your suggestions, and we’ll continue working to improve the app!

Replace your stock photos app!

First to the developer: THANK YOU! It may seem so simple: make a photos app that works better and has more functionality than the stock app. And yet, somehow all previous attempts have either fallen short or been bloated with garbage. This app is simply excellent, and I now use it instead of the stock photo app.

To all iOS users who manage and tweak TONS of photos, you will love this app!

One thing for the developer: the stock photos app does work with highlights and brightness a little better. For example, highlights for some reason in Hash is ALWAYS already at maximum, which doesn’t make sense because then it can’t be raised. Any level setting that is opened for the first time should ideally start at the neutral center point, where the user can go up or down. This is really my only issue at the moment.

Renents

I was so happy to find this app, after Apple put out IOS 18 and decided to change the look and feel, and most importantly usability of their photos, somebody decided to mix all the albums with the “Recents” and thought people would like that! WRONG!!
Thanks for this app, its a no brainer, nice and neatly organized, and easy to use! Most importantly, keeping pictures that have been recently Taken with the camera on the phone and not sorted to any albums yet, all available in a folder called “Recents”, as Apple’s photos used to have it before iOS 18.

Better Photo Gallery App but needs LAN NAS sharing integration

Just as the title says. There’s no way to offload media.

Response from developer

Thank you for using HashPhotos and for sharing your review. We are planning to support this feature in the future and will continue striving to make the app even better. Thank you for your feedback!

Please clarify what “Photo data” entails

“* HashPhotos does not transmit any photo data or personal information to external servers.” Photo data? Did you mean the metadata only? So the photo itself is transmitted to your server?

Response from developer

“any photo data” includes both the photos and their metadata. HashPhotos does not transmit users’ photos, videos, or any associated metadata to any server.

Finally!!

It looks like this program has much more than I was looking for, and I look forward to exploring all the functionalities. I bought it for one simple function that I can’t believe iOS Mac Apple Photos does not have - the ability to see which photos are not sorted to an album. On the Mac, you can create a smart album that sorts all photos not yet sorted in albums, but for over a decade, Apple has refused to create a way to do this on an iOS device. I discovered this app through an Apple discussion forum and I’m so glad I did. I bought the lifetime premium instantly. And yet I see there’s so much more to discover in this program. What a lifesaver! And so affordably priced, thank you.

Fantastic photo app!

Hashphotos is amazing. It's one of those rare apps you have no hesitation in purchasing as it is well worth the cost. It is everything that the iOS & iPad Photos app should be. It basically works on top of Apple's Photos app so you can use either app interchangeably to manage your photos. The way Hashphotos implements custom tags adds so much functionality for working with large media collections is very handy (I have over 60,000 photos & videos).

Great, clean app!

Replaced the mess that is IOS 18 Photos app. Clean, intuitive, and customizable. First time I’ve ever needed a a 3rd party app because Apple dropped the ball. Luckily came across this one. Allowed me to remove all the nonsense that the main Photos app added. Appreciate being able customize to not have default view title and edit options on a picture/video when I open it and just display it full screen. No more multiple taps to accomplish something simple! Great job!

Great photo management tool but

The desktop app to transfer photos and videos to phone doesn’t work for large files. 2+ GB and all failed to transfer.
